Chapter 338: A Surprise Visit

Oliver was helping adjust Avery’s pillow when their bedroom television played Brooke’s interview. It had been over a month since she was discharged from the hospital, and during this time she had been tied up at home, monitored by Oliver, constantly.

"Brooke!" they both called out in shock, they exchanged quick glances with each other, their questioning gazes matching. ’

"What a crazy twist. Who would’ve thought that the intern you were looking for was married to Ethan the whole time?" Oliver piped up, the day after, as he peeled some apples for Avery.

She nodded, "It makes me wonder if she’s a victim just like Jen, or worse, if she was in on it the whole time."

Oliver sighed, "I don’t know, what I do know is, the cops down at the station aren’t helping with the search. It’s been weeks, and yet they still haven’t found her." he pointed out.

Avery pulled her covers up to her still bandaged arms, although she had been cleared by the doctor to stop using them, she couldn’t bear to. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Underneath the bandages was less than a shell of what she used to be in the past. Oliver was already tolerant enough, he hadn’t broken off the engagement, despite her looking the way she did now.

Her hands pulled down on the purple head warmer that shielded her bandage covered bald head.

"I wouldn’t blame her if she skipped town, getting away from that monster is the only thing we can do." she said, her tone filled with anger, frustration and a hint of fear.

Oliver dropped the knife and apple he reached for her hand under the blanket and gave it a tight squeeze. "The police officer said he would get back to us once they get a break through in the case."

She avoided his touch, "That’s all bullshit! No one is going to try and go against Ethan, he has the police, and the public wrapped around his finger."

Oliver knew this was true, but for her sake he had to lie, he had to give her some form of hope, the doctor diagnosed her with a depression, and advised him to watch her carefully. The shock she was going through wouldn’t be an easy thing to overcome.

"Come on, don’t be that way-" he was saying, but was cut off by the sound of his doorbell.

Avery tensed up when he got up, "Where are you going?" she snapped.

He planted a kiss on her forehead, "I’m just going to check who it is."

She shook her head, "Don’t open the door!" her voice cracked, her eyes watery, "Please."

He sighed, "It’ll be fine, he can’t find us here." he knew that was also a lie, but his fiancé was shaking like a leaf under the covers at the sound of a doorbell.

No lie was unbelievable, as long as it got her to calm down, he would say it.

"I’ll be back in a minute, and don’t worry, I won’t open the door." he left the bedroom door open, something he had been cautious to do ever since she regained consciousness.

At the door, he half expected it to be another co-worker who came for a visit, or an extended family member fishing for gossip. Considering the nature of the situation, both sides of the family was anxious to know just what had happened.

However, it was no family member at the door, but an unfamiliar face he had not seen before.

"Who are you?" he asked, over the entry panel.

The man reached into his pocket and flashed a badge across the screen, "Detective Axel." he said, "I have some questions for you and your fiancé."

"Grandfather, what do you mean cousin Thane? He already abandoned this family behind. How can someone like that head the family? Any one of us is a surely better pick!" Desmond pointed out.

His grandfather glared harshly at him. "Silence! Out of all my grandchildren, you’re the most worthless one of the lot! How dare you compare yourself to him?" He pointed his jittery finger at him.

"He’s the only one with the balls to stand up to me. And he has the backbone to prove it too. You lot are all sheltered sheep doing whatever your pathetic parents tell you to." Zachiel barked, his attendant rushing to cater to him.

Mallory noticed William’s demeanor dampen.

Her heart sunk.

She heard all about how he devoted his entire childhood to pleading his grandfather.

To the extent he had to hide his relationship from everyone, just to keep the pretense up.

Zachiel went on, "Next week, I’m going to him, and bringing him back myself, the rest of you will make certain to welcome him, without causing a fuss."

Anna tried to interject, but Maverick cut her off, "Understood, grandfather. We will all welcome cousin Thane."

Mallory frowned at how docile Anna became after her brother interjected, it reminded her of herself and her cousin Vance, it seemed like it wasn’t all roses over on that branch of the family.

"You are all dismissed." the old man announced, sending them away.

Outside, Desmond grabbed Matthew by the collar, and slammed him against the nearest wall. "Bastard! What the hell did you say to grandfather?!" he demanded.

Grabbing his wrists, he forced his grip off, "What? Don’t tell me you thought someone like you could impress the old man?" he sneered at him.

Mallory reached for his hand, and slowly shook her head from side to side, "Let’s just go." they had already gotten what they wanted, and perhaps even more, causing a fight right outside the old man’s room would just ruin their chances.

And probably what Desmond wanted.

But Matthew wasn’t calm enough to see that, he tightened his grip on Desmond’s wrists, ready to crush it.

Thankfully, William marched past them, breaking up the squabble, before it could mature into a full blown fight. All eyes turned to him, as he walked away, without saying a single word to anyone.
