Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband-Chapter 336: A Sudden Summon
At the mansion, Matthew and Mallory were summoned to Zachiel’s bedroom, for a special discussion. They imagined it was for the wedding and wasted no time to arrive.
However, at the door, they ran into Desmond, who seemed equally confused to see them.
"What are you doing here? Don’t tell me you’re here to eavesdrop on what grandfather intends to tell us?" He scoffed. "You illegitimate pricks have no shame whatsoever."
Matthew tried to retort, but Mallory gave his hand a tight squeeze, and slowly shook her head from side to side. "Let’s get going, your grandfather must have something important to tell us."
They went inside, only to see that Anna, Maverick and William were already in attendance.
A maid closed the door after them, and locked it from the inside.
A nervous swear ran across Matthew’s forehead.
This was about the inheritance. Judging by Zachiel’s sickly appearance, he knew the old man was standing on his last legs.
With the help of his caretakers, he rose into a sit up position. His grand children stood closer to each other, so he could get a better view of them.
Sitting on a sofa was the lead of their family’s legal team, and the oldest lawyer for the Grayson family, his grandfather’s trusted confidant.
"Your grandfather has gathered you all here to discuss his will." He said, breaking the ice. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
William tensed up, and so did Matthew.
Why was he discussing this without their parents?
The lawyer reached into his briefcase, and pulled out the will. "He said, that after a good time spent on contemplating, he’s entrusted his wealth to the only person who can lead the family even after his death."
Maverick smiled, "What was the need to have us all arrive? Shouldn’t the heir have been sufficient?" He shifted his gaze to the old man. As though challenging him to speak.
The old Zachiel would’ve reprimanded anyone for questioning him.
Yet now...
The lawyer answered, "He wants to commend all his grandchildren, for their efforts to please him, and has divided some assets among you lot."
An assets share?
Mallory and Matthew exchanged quick glances with each other.
William lowered his head, "Grandfather, I ask that you reconsider for a bit more, until you’re in better spirits. Please, do not make a hasty decision."
By hasty, he meant that the old man must’ve been charmed by Matthew. Not only was he the only Grayson grandchild with a fiancé, but he was making a name for himself in the business.
Anna seconded, "Yes, grandfather, it’s far too early for a will, we still want to be with you for a bit longer." She said, although, she did not mean half of anything said.
’You can fall in a ditch for all I care. But don’t you dare give Matthew a fucking penny!’ she knew she wasn’t in the running, but she would’ve preferred either William or her brother getting the wealth.
The lawyer waited for them to finish, before he said, "He has already signed on it, and has said he will not be changing his mind." He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, "Now, it’s time to start with the share of assets."
Zachiel nodded, as if giving him the permission to proceed.
"I shall be starting from the least to the most." The lawyer informed them, forcing everyone to straighten their spines.
"To Desmond, I leave you the properties in..." the lawyer read out the portion granted to Desmond, which to a regular person would be much.
But to a Grayson, it was insulting.
Next, he moved on, "To my future granddaughter in law, Mallory..."
Mallory felt Matthew give her hand a tight squeeze at her name. It came as a shock that she, who hadn’t been officially married in was receiving a portion of the Grayson assets, and more than Desmond also.
After she finished hearing, she gave her appreciation. "Thank you, grandfather." At least, unlike the Rosamunds, he left something behind for her.
The will reading went on.
Anna was next, which everyone expected.
It was after her name, that everyone tensed up.
All that was left, was Matthew, Maverick and William.
The heir wouldn’t get an asset share.
Whoever got called next was automatically not the heir to the Grayson wealth.
Between, the three, whoever was called next was out of the running.
"To my grandson, William, I leave you my..."
At the mention of his name, William lost his step for a second.
"Grandfather-" he tried to protest, but the old man sent him a harsh glare, shutting him up completely.
Desmond, and Anna wore stunned expressions on their faces as they listened to William’s share.
In comparison, his was remarkably more than the rest, and it was assets and proprieties in very lucrative areas.
Yet!
He wasn’t the chosen heir!
William’s heart raced.
What would he tell his father and grandmother?!
After the reading was over, the lawyer took a pause for some water, before proceeding to the next name.
Mallory could practically hear Matthew’s racing heart. His nervous shaking and reddened face was a stark contrast to Maverick’s composed demeanor.
He didn’t seem the least bit fazed by any of what was happening.
"And now, onto the next asset share." The lawyer announced.
Anna started to scratch the sides of her arms, her nails digging into her skin. Desmond clenched his jaw.
Not Matthew!
Anyone but Matthew!
They all hoped, as the lawyer parted his lips to announce...
"And to my grandson, Matthew. I leave to you my assets in..."
Anna and Desmond sighed in heavy relief, as the old man read out the assets granted to Matthew!
Mallory’s heart dropped.
This was all too sudden!
It was too unfair!
They hadn’t even had the chance to prove themselves yet!
And Maverick who wasn’t even a part of the family business would inherit everything?!
She looked at Maverick, who was still so calm it sent chills down her spine. Was this staged? Had he met with the lawyer before hand and known this would happen?
’He was the first one to speak, and asked why the rest of us were invited. Did he want to keep his title as heir secret?’ she wondered.
"And now, finally to Maverick, my oldest grandson." he cleared his throat, stealing everyone’s attention.
"I leave behind my assets in the..."
The lawyer’s words were like daggers thrown at one’s heart.
"Grandfather? What do you mean by assets? Isn’t cousin Maverick the heir?" Anna piped up.
Mallory was grateful she asked, because just like the rest of them, she was confused.
The lawyer tried to clear up the misunderstanding, but Zachiel parted his lips and answered for himself.
"I thought it over, and after observing all of you, I’ve decided that none of you are deserving of my empire!"
Before they could complain, he added, "The only one truly worthy of my wealth, and being the head of this family, is and will always be...Thane!"
