Chapter 320: Tying Up Loose Ends

"Sir, you called for me?" Jessica asked, stepping into the lab.

"Sit down, there’s something I’d like to discuss with you." he said, offering her a stool. She nodded, then sat down, her eyes puzzled. Her boss had been working tirelessly on their new product about to be launched, so it was rare to catch him so relaxed for a change.

"As you already know, we have a big project on the way, in about three weeks our product will be launched after it’s final round of beta testing." he briefed her. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

"Yes, I am aware sir." She knew all this, everyone at the company did.

"However, I will not be around when that happens." He reached into a drawer and pulled out two folders. He slid them across the counter to her, his demeanor dampened.

Jessica reached for the red folder and looked inside, after flipping a few pages, she frowned, "Sir, why do these new product designs have my name listed as the main supervisor?" she inquired, reaching for the blue folder, which had the same thing.

"I am going abroad in a few days, but I don’t know when I’ll make the trip back." There was something about the way his tone dropped that made Jessica feel uneasy. She shook her head and closed the folder.

"You can always oversee the projects remotely, you don’t need to do this, sir." she insisted, "And Danny and Lance can-" she was saying, but he cut her off.

"A year." Thane’s eyes darkened, "That’s what the specialists said six months ago was all I had left, before my condition becomes completely fatal."

Jessica gasped and slowly shook her head, her eyes widened in horror. "No, that can’t be! The treatment should be working now that your medication isn’t being tampered with." she pointed out.

Thane exhaled softly, "I would appreciate it if this doesn’t leave this room. I have already steeled myself for what’s to come, I’m not going to leave behind any regrets." he balled his fists.

"What about Brooke? Does she know about this?"

"She’ll know when the time is right. Right now, I need you to oversee the product’s launch, once it hits the market, begin the production of any of the designs in those folders." he told her, then got up to leave.

She followed, "Sir, this is madness! You cannot expect me, expect anybody to just take this! This company needs you, and your wife does too. You can’t disappear without giving a proper explanation." she stood in front of him, arms spread out. "You owe it to them, at the very least."

Thane left his hand hanging on the door handle, he sighed, already tired out. He knew Jessica would make a fuss over this, and had prepared himself for a tongue lashing.

"I am not abandoning anything. The ideas in those folders, should last the company for a solid five years. I also left behind a road map on how to handle the business aspect too. Not to mention, I’ve taken all the necessary legal actions, the Grayson family will not be able to interfere in the business." he started off.

"And as for my wife," his eyes softened, "She won’t be alone when I’m not here, she’ll be provided for and adequately cared for. Brooke, doesn’t need me." he said, as though trying to convince himself.

Edward stepped into the elevator, just to see Maverick inside, wearing a company pass. He waved his hand, shooing his associates away, leaving them both inside.

"Good day uncle, it’s a pleasure running into you here." he said, his eyes glued to his phone.

Edward tried to peer into his phone, but Maverick turned it off, he sharply turned to his uncle, a flippant grin on his face, "How is William doing these days?"

"He’s busy with work, he’s closing off a major deal with a new company." Edward tried to gloat, but Maverick did not seem impressed.

"Oh, but I heard he pulled out of the bidding for that project, hasn’t Matthew already taken over?" he pried in a teasing tone.

"No, this is another project." he covered up, "This one will fetch a far better profit than whatever Matthew can pull off." Edward said with utmost confidence.

The elevator arrived on the third floor, Maverick turned his phone and placed a call. Edward peered over, to see he was calling Matthew. He tried to ask why, but before he could, Maverick had stepped out of the elevator and treading down the hallway.

In his office, Edward immediately called for William, to get a status briefing on the newest project he was handling. It was nearing the last quarter of the year, and his father would summon them for a progress report.

As he waited for William to come in, he got a call from inside his breast pocket. He stopped pacing and reached into his suit for his second phone. Without looking at the contact, he placed the phone to his ear, a look of irritation in his eyes.

"I told you not to call this number unless it’s an emergency-" he was saying, until an angry voice on the line cut him off.

"What is this I’m hearing?! Your family is discontinuing the product?!" the voice yelled over the phone.

Edward ran his fingers through his hair, "Where did you hear that?!" he panicked.

No one in the family had leaked that Thane had pulled out his tech designs from the company’s recent lineup. His father had told them Thane was merely acting out and would soon come to his senses.

So how did this get out so quickly?

"So it’s true?" the other person hissed.

"Don’t worry, I’ve got the issue under control, just give me some time-"

He got cut off, "Time is the one thing we do not have. We have a list of ready buyers and distributors chewing my ears off! If we can’t meet the quota-"

The door to Edward’s office was suddenly opened, and in came William, with his grandmother, Sophia in tow.

Edward swiftly ended the call and tucked the phone back into his breast pocket. "William, where the hell have you been?" he barked at him.

William zoned his gaze on his father’s phone sitting on his desk, "Forgive me father, I got a call that grandmother had arrived." he answered, but his mind was elsewhere, as he wondered when his meticulous father had gotten another phone...
