Chapter 319: Something Only You Can Do

Brooke slapped his hand away, "What brother?" she frowned, she had though she didn’t hear right, but the anger in his eyes was impossible to misinterpret.

He balled his fists, "Don’t act coy with me! My brother, David worked at Halton Inc. alongside you!" he spat out.

Her heart skipped a beat, how did he know about her former job?

She turned to him, "John?" who was that? She didn’t recall any intern with that name.

"Oh wow! So you don’t even recall the name of the man you had framed and murdered!" Aaron cursed at her, spiking up her memory.

Her hand dropped to her chest, "The guy from accounting..." she muttered under her breath, the one who had asked her out and was suddenly arrested for corporate fraud.

It had been so long that she had already forgotten his name.

"No, that isn’t right. His last name wasn’t-"

Aaron cut her off, "Our parents were divorced when we were young, I went with father abroad, and he stayed back with our mother." his words carried heavy indignation, laced with regret.

"Do you even know how much our mother suffered when he got arrested and then killed?!" he raised his voice, fortunately, her trailer was farthest from the set and there was no one around.

"Wait a second," she ran her fingers through her hair, getting her thoughts straight, "John killed himself, after he got caught, I didn’t frame anyone." she argued.

"And even if what you’re saying is true, why do you think I’m the one behind it?" How did he even know about her?

He reached for his phone and showed her a picture of herself, she was with crutches, standing next to Avery and Jen at the break room, judging from the angle, John had discreetly taken the photo.

"He used to talk about you a lot to me, I warned him not to get involved with you, but he insisted, insisted you were merely the CEO’s assistant. All he did was ask you to dinner..." he cut himself short, unable to finish his sentence.

He swiped on his screen and showed her a screenshot of a chatroom.

"Why was my family targeted just because he liked the new intern?" his voice was broken, and filled with immense sorrow.

Brooke’s eyes hungrily read through the messages, trying to fill in the blanks.

-"How dare you touch her? How dare you come close to what’s mine?-

-"Who is this?"- John responded.

A picture of his mother at the grocery store was sent, with a threat attached.

-"Resign, or you will regret going near Brooke."-

She gasped and nearly dropped the phone, "This is crazy." she muttered to herself, her heart racing.

"B-But Ethan wouldn’t kill him-" she tried to convince herself, but a voice at the back of her mind screamed he would.

She felt like throwing up.

She had been meeting this man, a murderer, who could end her life in an instant if she wasn’t careful.

"Don’t tell me you want to act like you knew nothing about this, don’t be stupid!" He argued.

She shook her head, "Why would I know anything about it?!"

"Because I came back for his funeral and went to look for you! I was looking for answers, on who killed my brother, but you had resigned! I searched and asked around, but no one knew where you were! You vanished without a trace, so what else could I have thought?!"

His shouting eventually drew people’s attention to the trailer, thankfully, Brooke knew this would happen. She immediately draped her hand over his mouth, keeping him quiet.

"Shh!" She told him, her eyes sharp.

After a tensed two minutes, they heard some people walk away from the trailer, once they were out of hearing distance, she took her hand off his mouth and gathered her things.

"We can’t discuss this here. Contact me, and we’ll talk some more." She told Aaron.

He huffed, "And how am I sure you won’t run away again?"

"I won’t, I swear it. Believe me, I want to get back at the bastard who did this to your brother, just as badly as you do." She slung her bag over her shoulder, then looked him right in the eye, "Trust me."

"Damn it! You can’t lend me just two hundred thousand?! I swear I’ll pay you back in a month!" Anna scratched the back of her head, her eyes filled with fear.

She had ran out of her dosage, and her plug wouldn’t sell it to her at a lower rate.

The person on the other end of the call did not have a solution to her plight, they ended the call. She tried to call a few more times, but they did not answer.

"Shit! Shit! Shit!" She banged her fist against the bar counter.

The bartender stole glances at her whilst he tied up the area. Wondering what the upstanding Anna Grayson was doing at his bar so early in the day, her hair a mess, and her eyes swollen.

Nothing about her seemed proper in the least.

His attention was sharply drawn from Anna’s panicked frenzy, to the tall man, in a black coat, who just walked into the bar.

His bar was usually quiet at this time, so it was rare to see anyone here, especially an unfamiliar face, who by the two guards heavily guarding him, he could guess was rich.

Not that anyone who wasn’t rich could access this area.

"Welcome, what can I start you gentlemen with?"

Upon hearing that she was not alone, Anna threw her hoodie over her head, to conceal her identity.

But Kayden slid onto the stool next to her, and slipped a credit card to her.

She traced her gaze from the credit card, to the insufferable man from her one night stand.

"What are you doing here? Are you stalking me?!" She raised her voice.

He shook his head, "I was worried, I went to that bar, but you weren’t there."

"In case you didn’t know, that is stalker behavior! I don’t want anything to do with you, why can’t you get that into your thick skull?! We both made a mistake, that’s all there is to it." She emphasized.

Kayden listened for a bit, "I know, that as a Grayson, you can take care of yourself, but..." he left his words hanging.

He was her first, and for some reason, he felt guilty. They were both drunk. Rather, she had offered him a drink, and he discovered that night he was a fucking lightweight.

Being in a come for nine years, made him miss out on a lot he should’ve done in his early twenties.

"Let me make this up to you, I want to set things right between us." It was a thing about lessening his burden, or so he convinced himself.

But a part of him wanted to see her again.

She was fierce, and when he was with her, from the moment he saved her, the night they spent drinking, and the sex they had, tight into the next morning, he never once thought about his complicated family life.

She made him feel mundane.

Anna clicked her tongue, "No, there’s nothing-" she was saying, only for her gaze to lock in on the card on the counter.

Her rage had blinded her from the card, her lips curved into a wicked grin. "You want to make things right between us? Fine." She leaned in closer, earning a raised brow from Kayden.

"There’s something you and only you can do for me." She said, gently tapping her fingers on the card.
