Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 96: I know what you’re thinking
Max tapped his finger on his tablet a few times and then looked up, twisting his lips on contemplation.
"Come on, brother, why is it taking you so long to decide?" Mariam asked. She was dressed as a secretary, waiting for her brother to approve her request.
"Don’t rush me. I’m thinking of how this is going to benefit me." He said which suddenly made her annoyed.
"But this isn’t even about you." She said, but he was still being stubborn. She clicked her tongue. She should’ve gone to her grandfather instead and then it would’ve been a done deal but she just had to come to her brother who would become so petty and jealous for anything that had to do with Valerie.
Mariam had dressed up that day, having come up with an excellent idea on how to assist Valerie. Well, let’s not call it excellent since it wasn’t exactly the best and it was also a form of cheating.
Well, she planned to get into one of the departments and then get recognized for her abilities, even if she was still so young. If Valerie saw that she had the capabilities, she would let her work by her side. And with the experience she would accumulate, it would be a done deal.
All she needed now was a letter of recommendation, that her brother was being so petty to give.
"So, what about school?" Max suddenly asked, raising his gaze to stare seriously at her. "I don’t mind that you’re doing this to help your sister-in-law, but you’re still a kid." He said. "You shouldn’t be concerning yourself with adult matters." He added.
"I’m not a kid." Mariam said. "I’m 19."
"Exactly." Max stated and she flinched. That serious gaze... Was he really not going to let her do it? But... She thought he was okay with it when she spoke about it the other day.
She clenched her fists. Why was he trying to stop her from doing what she wanted? Is this also him being petty?
"I know what you’re thinking." Max said and leaned closer. "I am your older brother. When you said you wanted to help out as her assistant, I thought of it as a temporary measure and that you’d be done within a few months but with this new plan of yours, it’s clear you’re planning to stay and climb up a ladder you never even erected. It’s stupid." 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
His words were sharp and harsh. She felt her heart hurting.
"I can let you do so much as spend a few months playing assistant but it ends there. I’m concerned that you’re trying to get into the working class at such a young age."
"I’m 19!" She yelled and to which Max responded in a rather calm manner.
"And what do you think 19 year olds do at this point in their life?" His question silenced her immediately. "Mariam, this world... It’s a battlefield. You’ll get into it one day, I know. So you don’t have to rush it because the faster you get into it, the possibility that you will be the prey of those experts."
"What do you mean?" She asked, her tears slowly sliding down her cheeks but Max had his head down and couldn’t even see that he was making his sister cry.
"Even if you plan to use a fake identity, there are people who will find out your true identity and they will use that against you. And in a company that’s already falling apart, you will be the prey and all aggression will be transferred to you." He explained and sighed. "If you want to help out, you shouldn’t go ahead with this plan. You will only burden Valerie."
He raised his head and was shocked to see Mariam crying. Her tears were flowing down her cheeks rapidly but her mouth was shut as she clenched her teeth, not letting herself sob.
"I... I understand." She said. "I’m not as smart as I thought I was."
Max gulped. Why was there so much tears?
"I shouldn’t do useless things." She said. "I’ll forget about this plan and just try to convince Miss Valerie to let me work as her assistant. That’s okay, right?" She asked, smiling through the tears that were still flowing down her cheeks. "You’ll allow me to do that much, right?"
Max was silent. He sighed and got up from his chair. Maybe he was a bit too harsh with his words but that was the only way he could think of in order to snap his stubborn sister out of such a plan.
She had a future ahead of her. She shouldn’t try to tie herself to the mess that had nothing to do with her. Allowing her to be an assistant for a few months would be fine, right?
He walked up to her and took out hai handkerchief. He cleaned her cheeks but more tears kept rolling down.
"Since when were you the cry baby?" He muttered and she wrapped her arms around him, finally opening her mouth to cry. She sobbed inside his coat, her voice muffling thanks to the thick fabric.
Max shut his eyes for a moment and then hugged her back.
"There, there." He said. "You can let it all out on my suit. I’ll take the charges for the dry cleaning from your allowance." He said and she punched his chest, causing him to laugh.
She sniffed and looked at him with angry eyes with a flushed face from crying too much and running nose.
"You really are petty." She sulked and he laughed more.
"I was just trying to get your mood up." He said and brought the handkerchief to her nose. "Now, blow."
She eyed him, not wanting to do as she was told.
"What? Do you want to start a rebellion?" He asked but she simply snatched the hanky from his hand and blew her nose herself.
"I’m not a kid." She said. "So stop treating me like one."
"Yeah, you’re not a kid but you’re still my kid sister." He said and patted her head, smiling warmly.
"I’m sorry I didn’t think my plans through." She apologized. "To think I would’ve created a fuss with such a plan."
"It’s alright. Just be glad that your brother is so capable." He said, taking out his phone to see the message that just came up. "It seems it’s time."
"Time for what?" Mariam asked and he smirked.
"Time for the criminals to be executed."
