Chapter 97: Pay Ross Corp a visit

Max was hoping he’d be able to see Valerie after over a week of separation at the execution site but when he got there, she was absent.

He took out his phone and dialed her number. After a few rings, she picked up.

"Where are you?" Max asked, looking around if he had missed her by chance.

"I’m still at the office." Valerie said and suddenly coughed, causing him to furrow his eyebrows.

"What was that? Are you sick?" He asked but she shook her head and said,

"Nothing like that. I just feel parched." She said, but that did not make him any less worried.

"What’s that assistant of yours doing? If you’re parched, you should drink something." He said and sighed, reliving his angry tone. "Anyway, you should take care of yourself." He said. "Getting sick will do neither of us good."

"I know that." She said and coughed once more.

He wasn’t comfortable with this.

He looked at the people who were getting seated to witness the execution process of Bernard and also to watch Lucy get whipped.

He gritted his teeth. What was the point of being here if he couldn’t even see her?

"Max, I need to go." Valerie said. "Let me know once it’s over."

"You really aren’t going to come?" He asked.

"I’d rather invest the time in working." She said. "And besides, the person whom I want to see will be executed in three days." 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Max nodded and cut the call. He saw no need to be there any longer so he decided to leave.

"You’re leaving?" Mariam asked. They were the only ones who came this time and Max nodded.

"Yes, let’s go. We have no need to be here." He said to her.

"What about Miss Valerie?" She asked in return, to which he shook his head and said,

"She’s not coming." With those simple words, Mariam understood why they were leaving.

She got up and glanced at Bernard sitting on the chair with his hands tied behind the chair and his head covered with a sack bag. He was only minutes away from his death.

The firing squad was getting ready too, loading their long guns.

She shook her head and turned to head after her brother but then she bumped into someone. He was wearing a nose mask, a baseball hat, and a hoodie with the hood covering his head.

"Sorry." She said and walked past him.

This mysterious man stood still for a while and then glanced back to look at Mariam and Max as they left. The corner of his lips curled up and he smirked underneath his nose mask.

"Ayo, it seems they had other plans." He said and turned to look at the set in front of him. He stared at Bernard for a while and cackled. "I guess I’ll let this one pass. I only need one of them."

With those vague words said, he tucked his hands in the pocket of his hoodie and went to sit down, waiting for the execution of Bernard Ross to commence.

"So, where are we going now?" Mariam asked Max.

He took out the key remote from his pocket and pressed the button of the remote, which inevitably caused his car to light up.

"I think Valerie is sick." He suddenly said.

"What? How do you know that?" She asked but he simply glanced over his shoulder and then went to enter the driver’s seat.

Mariam clicked her tongue. Was he going to ignore her now? How did he know Valerie was sick? Did she tell him that?

No, judging by the kind of person she was, she wouldn’t say a word about it.

Then, was it just him being paranoid again?

"What are you doing standing there?" Max asked, whining the windows down. "Get it."

"Are we going to visit her?" She asked, opening the door.

"Yes. But first, let’s stop by a few places. I want to pick a few things up." He said and she nodded.

Well, be it paranoia, it wasn’t a bad thing to finally pay Ross Corp a visit. It would definitely be chaotic.

They finally arrived at Ross Corp after several stops and Mariam was drained.

First, they stopped at a pharmacy to get a few self-medicated pills for cold and sore throat.

And after that, it was from one shop to another. Max picked out everything he thought would look good on Valerie. Clothes, accessories, shoes, coats... He bought so many things that Mariam was compelled that he had the spirit of a lady when it came to shopping.

I mean, who takes so much time into picking out so many high-quality and detailed clothes, if not a lady? He took Valerie into consideration as he picked out the things he did; her red eyes, her pale skin, its softness, even her black hair that did not fail to rival the night sky.

He smiled every now and then, thinking of how well they would suit Valerie.

’What a doting husband.’ Mariam exclaimed, feeling her soul slowly leave her body due to exhaustion. ’And he said he was only going to pick up a few things. He literally bought enough things to open up the highest-grade boutique.’ she thought and groaned.

"I don’t know how Valerie is doing." Max suddenly said and she turned to look at him. "I know she doesn’t have time to take care of herself. She can’t get new and fancy things. She must be extremely worn out."

As he said these words, Mariam watched his hands clenching tightly on the steering wheel.

"She’s always indifferent, even to her own suffering." He added. "So I want to do all I can to help her. I’ll grow mad if I can’t even help her with this little."

Mariam stared at him and then stifled a laugh.

’Guess it wasn’t all thoughtless actions.’ she thought and turned her head to look out the window. ’My brother cares for her so much. I’m starting to get jealous, haha.’

On getting to the company, Max left everything in the car, except the medicine he had gotten from the pharmacy. They also picked up lunch on the way, planning to have lunch together.

As they strode through the company, they realized that it was more chaotic than they had imagined. At this rate, Ross would fall, right?

"I’m here to see Valerie." Max said.
