Chapter 157: I don’t have anything to say to you

That evening, Valerie had dinner with Mariam. Tiana said she had somewhere to be so she left. Grampa Leo got called as well, so it was just Mariam and Valerie.

"How is it?" Mariam asked and Valerie nodded. "Do you think you can eat more?"

"I think I’m okay with this." Valerie said, pushing the half-eaten food aside. "I’ve had enough."

"Alright. Don’t push yourself too much." Mariam said in a caring tone and Valerie smiled at her.

"Don’t you have somewhere to be?" Valerie asked. "I saw you got called earlier."

"Oh, that. It’s not that important." Mariam said but from the looks of it, it was indeed important. "It’s late, we can fix any issues tomorrow. Right now, there’s no one here by your side so I’ll stay here."

"If that’s why you want to stay then just go. I actually..." She sighed. "I want to be alone for a while so... Go do your thing."

Mariam looked at her sadly and then nodded.

"Then, I’ll get going." She said and called in one of the guards to carry the flask. "Take care. I’ll see you tomorrow." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

There were a lot of guards stationed around her so there was no need to be too concerned. But a person could never be too safe so she worried.

"Oh, and..." Mariam paused. "One of the guards told me Mom is in your old ward. I don’t know why she’s there but I asked them to look after her. She must be exhausted."

"Alright. I’ll keep that in mind."

Mariam left and Valerie was left alone.

She lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. Her eyes suddenly grew teary and tears rolled down. She closed her eyes, feeling her heart hurt.

She didn’t know things would get to this point.

She always wanted to believe that the danger would subside but even after all that happened, she didn’t imagine Max would be so badly hurt.

And it was all her fault.

’It could’ve been me.’ she thought.

Mariam got out of the hospital and then her phone rang again. She thought it was Stacy and answered,

"I’m on my way, Stacy."

"Who’s Stacy?" She heard Stephanie’s voice, and she opened her eyes in shock.

And then, she saw, right in front of her, Stephanie standing alongside Chris Romaine.

"Miss Mariam Stewart, a word?" He requested.

"I don’t have anything to say to you." She said, eyed Stephanie and wanted to walk away when Stephanie rushed out the words,

"Not even if it’s about your brother’s safety?"

Mariam paused, clenched her phone, and sighed.

"Fine. But you better make it snappy because I have somewhere to be."

"Oh, you must be referring to the emergency in Ross." Chris said and smiled. "That would be about me so you don’t have to worry. Let’s have a long chat, shall we?"

After a while of tossing and turning on the end, Valerie sat up and got off the bed. She thought she would be okay being alone with some silence but it was making her sick.

Just like when she stayed alone in her dark ward, wondering when Abigail would return with the next shot to torture her. It was stiffening.

And that aside, it had been a while since she slept alone in bed, so the memories were getting to her.

She decided to finally go see Max.

She held her drop stand and rolled it till she got to the door. She opened it and walked out, only to discover there were about ten guards lined up, guarding her room.

’Ah, it’s a bit...’

Since it was a VIP ward, there were not a lot of patients on that floor but the few who were there understood that a very important person was admitted in that ward.

The guards stretched out to the ICU where Max was under oxygen and unconscious.

"Where would you like to go, ma’am?" One of the guards asked.

"I’m just going to see my husband." Valerie answered and he nodded, signaling the guards to go ahead and seem to stay behind. ’Ah!’ Valerie exclaimed inwardly. ’I don’t even know what to say anymore.’

"All clear ma’am." The guard said, and Valerie nodded.

"Thank you." He took her drop stand from her and helped her roll it while she walked on.

She folded her arms, and pursed her lips, feeling a little uncomfortable.

The air in the hospital was already suffocating and made her nauseous but then there was the crowd.

But at least, this was better than having to face a syringe.

She got to the ICU and looked through the window, having no courage to go in.

"Max." She softly called out his name and felt her eyes tearing up again but she cleaned it with her sleeves.

She had been changed into the hospital clothes after getting Max’s blood all over her and fainting.

Tiana and the nurses helped her with that.

"It’s going to be okay, right?"

The guard standing a few feet away from her suddenly got a call on his walky-talky.

"Ma’am, a nurse visited your mother’s ward. Should we search her thoroughly."

"My mother’s ward? Tiana?" Valerie asked and he nodded. "Why? Is she sick?"

"It appears she was administered a dosage and the nurse went to refill it." He explained.

Valerie was a bit confused. She didn’t know that Tiana was under medication. Maybe she was more than exhausted.

"Let’s go there."

They got to the ward and opened the door when she found the nurse suspiciously smirking at the drip.

"Who are you?" The nurse flinched and turned in shock. Valerie looked at her. Why did she look familiar? "What are you doing?" She asked but the nurse fidgeted and turned to look at the person on the bed.

"How did I make such a mistake?" Eliana muttered to Valerie’s confusion. ’I have to get out of here before they notice anything. It’s a very deadly poison that kills you right away. They won’t know she’s dead yet.’

Valerie’s eyes narrowed. That nurse was suspicious.

"Ah, it seems I have the wrong medication for the wrong patient." Eliana said, trying her best to act normal. "I was checking the drip and it seemed like it was the right dosage though. I’ll go back to check properly first."

As soon as she picked up her tray, Tiana started convulsing, all to Valerie’s horror.
