Chapter 52: You Are Late

Chapter 52

The atmosphere in the large meeting room had grown heavy, long before the clock struck half past ten.

At the head of the polished mahogany table sat an extremely beautiful woman, who looked like the epitome of all things perfect, with curves in the right places, but a cold icy look in her otherworldly face. Her posture was straight, but the aura surrounding her made the entire room feel tense.

The floor to ceiling windows behind her reflected the warm sunlight that bathed the room in a light golden hue, but no one in the room paid attention to it. Instead all eyes were on the beautiful woman... Or it was safe to say that, all eyes kept drifting between her and the conspicuously empty seat beside her.

A middle-aged man, probably around his late forties to early fifties, adjusted his tie and cleared his throat, unable to endure the silence any longer.

"Miss Nyx, with all due respect, this meeting was scheduled for ten o’clock sharp. It is already past ten-thirty, and the largest shareholder is still nowhere to be seen." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Beside him, a man who looked like he was in his sixties leaned forward, his voice was less polite and more pointed.

"This kind of behavior is unacceptable." He snapped. "Even if he is the new largest shareholder of this prestigious company, that doesn’t give him the right to not attend a very important meeting, which I suppose, is his first meeting. If this is how he behaves, then perhaps we need to cast a vote of removal against him."

A low murmur of agreement spread across the room, as almost everyone agreed with the older man. But Nyx didn’t respond immediately, instead, she just simply lifted her calm, indifferent eyes and let it pass over each and every one of them, one by one, causing the murmurs to slowly die down under that quiet display of authority.

However, deep inside, her emotions were anything but calm. Right this moment, she wanted to strangle the fool for making her look foolish. Even after her constant reminder, the idiot had still not come yet... His only saving grace was the fact that she still needed him, if not, he would have ended up with the fishes a long time ago.

Drawing a slow deep breath, she let it out just as quietly, forcing the dangerous thoughts back to the corner of her mind. Then she finally spoke.

"We will still wait for him. And I don’t want to hear any talk of removal against him, is that clear?"

A few of the shareholders exchanged glances, clearly dissatisfied with that response, but none dared to speak out. The old man in his sixties frowned slightly, clearly not believing that Nyx was blatantly willing to defend the so-called largest shareholder.

"Miss Nyx, sorry if I may ask, but how can we still halt the meeting, when the largest shareholder is clearly refusing to come? This meeting concerns the company’s growth and overall development, so I suggest we start it."

Nyx shifted her eyes toward him, and said casually.

"I said wait, he will surely come and join us."

But her certainty that Alex will surely come, did nothing to soothe them. If anything, it only made the tension in the room more tense, as the other shareholders were clearly disapproving of the fact of waiting for a man, who might not even show up at the end of the day.

Another shareholder, a somewhat pretty woman with sharp elegant features in her forties, but still looked like she was just in her mid thirties, scoffed lightly.

"And what if he doesn’t show up? Are we expected to sit here indefinitely while he disrespects everyone in this room?"

Nyx rested her hand lightly on the table and said nonchalantly.

"If he doesn’t show up, then you are free to start the meeting... But just remember that I will personally mark the faces of those people who choose to be impatient and no one wants to be badly remembered by me."

Immediately after she said that, everyone unconsciously stiffened in their seats. None of them could ever forget who Nyx really was. Just because she was now a shareholder like them, didn’t mean that she was on the same level as them, if anything she was vastly superior, wielding unimaginable power in the city that could rival that of the other two underworld rulers, so no one wanted to get on her bad side.

Even though they were clearly afraid of Nyx, the dissatisfaction that had filled the room earlier was still there, but it had been pushed beneath a layer of caution, as each person began to choose their words more carefully than before. Even the old man who had suggested voting Alex out of the company earlier, adjusted his glasses and restrained his mouth.

It was clear that even he was afraid of the mighty queenpin, Nyx, afterall he was only but a minor shareholder with a little connection to some small time bigshots, who couldn’t even hope to compete with Nyx in the slightest. So even though he tried to hide it, the displeasure in his eyes was still clearly visible.

Nyx, on the other hand, remained completely composed. None of the people here could ever undermine her power, so she simply leaned back slightly against her chair, and lightly tapped her fingers against the polished surface of the table. However beneath her calm exterior, she was beginning to grow more and more disappointed with Alex.

The idiot was taking too long.

She shifted her gaze briefly toward the empty seat beside her, before shifting it back. She had clearly given him enough time, in fact, more than enough time, and yet the fool still hadn’t shown up. For a fleeting moment she considered sending Doris and another awakened to go beat him up, and then drag him all the way here, but she dismissed the blooming thought.

Though that would have been effective, it could cause a permanent rift between them, and God knows how much she still needed him. Because if he was truly what she suspected he was, then he would be really indispensable in the long run.

She turned her gaze toward the large elegant clock on the office wall and watched as it ticked slowly.

10:41... 10:44... 10:48...

Every minute seemed to drag on, stretching the patience of everyone present to their absolute limit. Almost all the shareholders shifted in their seats, while others exchanged brief glances with each other, but no one dared to voice their complaints again, especially after Nyx’s earlier warning.

Finally, one of the shareholders, a young man in his late twenties, who had attended the meeting in the stead of his father, shifted a little too loudly in his seat as he tried to reach for a bottle of water. He froze immediately, as though realizing his mistake and cautiously glanced toward Nyx, only to find her in the same relaxed position, with her fingers still tapping lightly against the table, and an indifferent expression on her beautiful face.

He quickly sat back down and waited just like the rest of them. Just as the time was about to reach 10:55, the heavy door to the meeting room was suddenly pushed open, drawing without any exception, every single gaze in the room toward the entrance.

A tall figure, probably around 6ft, with raven black hair and forest green eyes that looked particularly charming, strode in. His face was really impressive up close, but what made everyone dissatisfied was the fact that his attire looked a bit disheveled and... Cheap.

Was this really the new largest shareholder of the company?

If they were being really honest, he clearly looked more like a country bumpkin, with no experience of being in a company as prestigious as this, than a powerful shareholder. These were the thoughts that were currently running through everybody’s mind.

Nyx glanced at him calmly and spoke casually.

"You are late. Go take a seat, so that we can start the meeting."

Before Alex could respond, the old man from earlier stood up. His face was flushed with a mix of irritation and anger, clearly emboldened by the presence of the other shareholders who silently shared his dissatisfaction.

"Is this him?" He voiced out while mockingly gesturing toward Alex. "The so-called largest shareholder we’ve been waiting for all this while?! This is complete and utter nonsense! How could the largest shareholder of this... Prestigious company be a college student with no grace or experience whatsoever? Or are you trying to bankrupt this company, Miss Nyx?"

A burst of murmur followed his words to show that they was clearly not the only person disappointed with this interesting turn of event. Nyx raised her hand, silencing the agitated crowd, before turning toward the clearly angry old man.
