Chapter 81: Ch 81: Rumors and Truth

The air in the imperial palace was rigid enough to make even the bravest warriors flinch. And it had everything to do with Prince Kaiden’s mood.

Ever since his engagement ceremony, he had been in a weird mood, which only got worse and worse as time passed.

But people still had hope that things would go back to normal. Especially since the actual wedding was inching closer and closer.

After three months of the engagement, the wedding time approached, and everyone waited for the invitations to come rolling out.

But there was no invitation.

Instead, there was a new rumor-Lady Sera was pregnant, and her condition had turned delicate.

In such a time, when she was unstable, she could neither be given medicine nor be put under too much pressure.

So it continued. The rumor finally got confirmed when she appeared in public two months after that, her belly showing.

But weirdly enough, she was alone, and Prince Kaiden was nowhere to be seen. And also, the wedding was nowhere to be seen.

No one knew what was happening, except the people involved. And just like that, eight months passed in the blink of an eye, no wedding in sight and the due date for Lady Sera approaching fast.

Currently, both Lady Sera and her father waited in Prince Kaiden’s office, their faces tense. They had only one objective for coming here today.

"Prince Kaiden, when are you going to do the right thing and take my daughter as your wife? Now that she is stable, you should hurry. It won’t be a good idea to have your heir be born out of wedlock."

Count Diltz complained as he slammed his hands on the desk in front of him. His angry eyes looked at Prince Kaiden, but the prince in question remained unbothered.

His chilling eyes looked back at the count, making the count flinch but stay in place. Tense silence followed, and Sera shifted awkwardly in her seat. She was not sure what she could even say.

Prince Kaiden had been more than cold to her over the past few months of her pregnancy. It was so bad that he hardly even looked at her.

Was she no longer attractive to him now that she was pregnant? Did he only like her for her body and nothing else...?

Finally, after a long wait, Prince Kaiden sighed and asked a question he had never asked all this time.

"Sera, are you sure that kid is mine? What if I tell you that I never laid with you? Will you still continue to deny the truth and say that this kid is mine?"

Silence filled the room as everyone stood stunned.

Count Diltz was the first one to react, his anger reaching a peak.

"How can you say that, Prince Kaiden? My daughter has only ever had eyes for you ever since she was young. Where would she even find the time or courage to go to other men? Please take responsibility for her and your unborn child."

Count Diltz raged, but Prince Kaiden had already turned back to his work.

The guard who quickly entered the room looked scared for his life, but he still made his way over to Prince Kaiden and delivered his message.

"Prince Kaiden, Sir Nero has arrived. Should I ask him to come here...?"

The guard’s words made Prince Kaiden immediately stop working.

"Nero is here? Then I will head out to meet him. I have something to discuss with him as well. As for you both, you can leave now."

Prince Kaiden ordered, causing both Sera and Count Diltz to become agitated. They had more to say, but his current mood made it clear they should not push their luck.

"We... will see ourselves out. But please announce the date for your wedding soon. If for nothing else, then for Sera’s honor."

Count Diltz told the prince before leaving the room.

On the way out, both he and Lady Sera ran into Nero, who sat on a comfortable sofa in the guest room. They gave him a glare for daring to come and take the crown prince’s attention away.

But Nero just waved at them with a happy smile, mocking them for their unsuccessful attempts.

Prince Kaiden arrived not long after and took a seat.

"So, is Shuu still refusing to come here? Is he still not feeling better?"

Prince Kaiden asked, and Nero bit his lip to keep from saying too much.

"He... is still sick. By the way, I saw Lady Sera leave. She has truly gotten quite big during her last months. Are you sure you should not marry her before it’s too late?"

Nero asked, trying to change the subject.

"Do you also believe that the kid in her body is mine?"

Prince Kaiden asked, and Nero felt caught. He could sense the presence of the child in Lady Sera’s body, and the truth was as clear as day-that child had none of the imperial family’s special energy.

Someone else had gotten Lady Sera pregnant, but she was firm in her belief that the child belonged to Prince Kaiden. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

"You are right. That child does not have the imperial family’s presence. As your familiar, I would have sensed it if it was yours. So why have you not thrown her out yet and even kept the wedding on? What are you planning?"

Nero asked in a suspicious voice. He was well aware of the crown prince’s temperament. That was why he could not help but find everything that had happened so deliberate.

"The reason, you ask? Wouldn’t you know it better than me? So, how are Shuu and my child doing? Have they been born yet? Do you even know how much patience I have to exercise in order to not bring him back and lock him up?"

A sudden silence fell, and Nero realized that Prince Kaiden had put up a barrier around the room so no one would be able to hear him speak.

But that was not what chilled Nero. What made his heart skip was the feral look in Prince Kaiden’s eyes.

’Tsk, how did he know? Just how did he figure it out... no, that is not what’s important. I need to head back and save Shuu-’

"Sit down for now. I am sure we have a lot more we need to discuss here."

Nero felt his body move at the command, and before he knew it, he was sitting straight, his eyes shaking slightly with worry and stress.
