Chapter 61: Ch 61: The Gossip

"Tsk, why do we have to serve someone like him? Prince Kaiden has no more use for this cursed person. Why doesn’t he send him away?"

The maid’s sharp voice reached Nero’s ear, and he growled to remind her that he was still here. It caused the maid to flinch, but she neither apologized nor looked like she had made a mistake.

If anything, she looked even more sure of herself and held her head up.

The other maids were doing something similar as well. They ignored Nero and Shuu most of the time and only did what was asked of them when they were directly asked to.

Nero really wanted to teach them a lesson, but he had a feeling that Shuu would not like violence. And that was what kept him grounded.

Of course, the maids took this the wrong way and thought that Nero and Shuu were subdued because Prince Kaiden had asked them to keep a low profile.

That made the mistreatment even worse.

Luckily, meals were a communal affair, so they could not mismanage things there. But they did make sure to seat Shuu as far away from Prince Kaiden as they could.

It happened during dinner and breakfast the next day. By lunchtime, Prince Kaiden had gotten fed up with this and decided to take matters into his own hands.

He walked over to Shuu and Nero, who were already seated, and threw himself into the seat in front of Shuu. Everyone looked stunned to see Prince Kaiden behaving unlike his proper self, and they all gave Shuu a searching glance.

Since Shuu still had his head covered, no one knew what he looked like or what expression he was making. It made it difficult for others to judge him. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"Hmm, this feels unfair. You just keep sitting away from me for all of our meals. Have I done something wrong to you?"

Prince Kaiden asked, but his eyes were looking at the servants more than at Shuu. He knew that it was the servants’ doing, and he had wanted to address this soon. But Sera had distracted him until now.

Now that she was not here yet, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

"I am not avoiding you. I just...want to sit in a place where I am not in the public eye. I do not like to be looked at."

Everyone held their breath as Shuu replied back to Prince Kaiden in such an open and almost rude manner. People had lost their heads for way less.

But Prince Kaiden just smiled fondly at Shuu.

"Is that so? Then I guess I have no choice. I will have to join you here."

It was the exact second Lady Sera entered the hall with her maids and friends. She immediately headed to her seat before she looked around and spotted Shuu and Prince Kaiden sitting on the other end of the table.

Her face went red, then pale, and then back to red, and she looked around with a lost expression on her face.

Finally, she gathered enough semblance to call out to Prince Kaiden.

"Kaiden, what are you doing there? Are you not going to join me?"

Her cute face was tilted toward the side in a way she knew he could not resist. He had never not given in to her demands when she asked like this, and she knew that this time would be no different....

Only...

"I think I will sit here today and eat with Shuu. You are free to join me if you would like to."

Prince Kaiden told her, and Sera made a startled face.

She had never been told ’no’ by Prince Kaiden like this before, and she felt lost. The maids around her also looked startled, and her friend quickly spoke up.

"Ah, it seems like Prince Kaiden wants to show his ’former companion’ kindness before he has to leave the palace. Why won’t you join him, Lady Sera?"

Those words were spoken to ease the tense air, but Prince Kaiden decided not to cooperate with her.

"Shuu is still my current companion. Since I marked him, he will always remain my companion for life unless I somehow die. But anyway, you don’t have to worry about it, Sera."

Prince Kaiden’s words were no less shocking than a bomb. Especially for Sera, whose smile had frozen in place.

"I-I see..."

She stuttered before she quickly took a seat beside him and wrapped her arms around his own to show how close she was to him.

Lady Sera kept sneaking glances at Shuu, but the veil hiding his face made it almost impossible for her to be able to see his expression.

All she saw was him moving food around on his plate and not being able to put it in his mouth.

"It seems like the refined palate of the imperial palace does not suit your taste. It might be better for your health if you head home soon."

One of Sera’s friends commented and flinched, waiting for Prince Kaiden’s anger.

But instead of getting angry, Prince Kaiden looked concerned.

"Hmm, you really are not eating enough. Maybe something mild is the way to go. Should I call for-"

"I-I would like to extend an invite for my tea party to Shuu. It will be held in two days, and I think it will be a good time to introduce him to high society. What do you think, Prince Kaiden?"

Sera felt a searing jealousy taking over her insides as Prince Kaiden showed concern for Shuu.

Even if she knew that it was childish of her, she still felt like she had to distract herself from what was going on. So she quickly clapped her hands and brought up a new topic.

Nero’s expression told her that he knew what she was doing. But he did not stop her from pulling her trick.

"Hmm, a tea party held by you? Yes, that would be a good way to introduce Shuu to the people. Shuu, you should attend the tea party."
