Chapter 64: Chapter 64 - Angry Julien

Walking to his ring, Logan spotted a boy around 5’10" with a lean build and neatly groomed dark blond hair.

’’Good morning,’’ Logan gestured, stepping onto the stage.

Julien gave Logan one quick glance before turning away again, not acknowledging his presence.

’I see,’ Logan thought, standing in front of him. ’He’s not really a talker.’

’Fighting some arrogant kid like this in hand-to-hand combat will be difficult,’ Logan thought. ’I’m sure he’s already got more than 2 years of training while I only have around, what, three months?’

Both of them waited in silence for the instructors to get in position.

’’Alright,’’ Professor Li shouted to all the students. ’’Group 2 can start, Group 1 wait for further instructions.’’

Behind Logan, Group 2 started moving. He could hear the murmurs and the noises the devices made behind him.

Refocusing on his own test, a short woman with black hair that ended around her jaw appeared.

’’Are both of you aware of the rules?’’ she asked sternly, looking at both of them.

Logan and Julien nodded, waiting for the signal.

’’Good,’’ she said, glancing between them. ’’Let me repeat it once, just to make sure. Both of you will stop when I tell you to stop.’’

"’Get ready,’ she continued, causing Logan to ball up his fists tightly.

He carefully observed Julien as he got in a combat stance.

’’Start,’’ she motioned, taking a few steps back.

Logan advanced slowly, planning to bait out an advance from Julien.

Julien, on the other hand, waited patiently for Logan to get closer.

’Alright then,’ Logan thought, getting Julien just inside his range. ’Since you aren’t planning to move, I will.’

Lunging forward, he threw a jab toward Julien’s face.

Julien immediately responded, sidestepping while holding his arm beside his face before stepping forward and sending a punch towards Logan’s middle.

’Predictable,’ Logan thought, twisting his torso to barely avoid the blow.

But before he could strike back, Julien dropped low, reaching for a body lock around Logan’s waist.

Julien’s arms started to wrap around Logan’s waist, and Logan’s eyes widened.

’He’s trying to throw me down,’ Logan thought, quickly stepping back.

Julien’s fingers grazed his side but couldn’t lock around him.

Logan stumbled slightly as he regained his balance, but managed to stay upright.

His breathing got faster, but he didn’t notice it, fully focusing on the fight.

’This is fun,’ he thought, a grin spreading over his face. ’He’s using some kind of wrestling techniques I’ve never really fought against before.’

Like he’d suspected, Julien had far more experience and knew many different combat styles, which Logan hadn’t bothered to learn since most would be wasted time for him later on.

’’Is running all a Mercer can do?’’ Julien said, pulling Logan out of his thoughts.

’’What?’’ Logan asked, surprised to hear him speak.

’’Your family really has fallen off,’’ Julien continued, looking at Logan in disgust.

’What did I do to him?’ Logan thought, confused.

Julien didn’t give him time to piece it together.

He shot forward again, this time aiming a sweeping kick at Logan’s legs.

Logan jumped back, barely avoiding it once again as he watched Julien closely.

’He’s fast,’ Logan thought, studying Julien’s expression. ’But why is he so angry?’

Julien circled him, waiting patiently for Logan to advance once again despite his apparent anger.

Instead of acting directly, Logan spoke up.

’’Are you always this talkative during spars?’’ he asked, smiling as he got into a ready stance.

Julien didn’t respond. However, Logan could see a slight twitch in his expression before he moved forward.

After closing the distance, Julien reached out to grab a hold of Logan’s training clothes.

Waiting for the right moment, Logan pushed Julien’s arm away before kicking him in his stomach.

’And that’s what anger does during a fight,’ he thought, smiling as he watched Julien stumble back.

Anger made someone far more experienced make stupid mistakes.

Their fight continued equally because of Julien’s anger, until he finally managed to grab a hold of Logan’s shirt.

’Shit,’ Logan thought, trying to push Julien away.

But Julien held on tight.

As Logan tried to take a step back, Julien put one of his legs between Logan’s and placed his other hand on the ground.

’What is this??’ Logan thought, not knowing what to do.

Before he could do anything, Julien jumped up with his remaining leg, locking it behind Logan’s.

Logan lost his balance immediately, feeling Julien’s full weight pulling on him. He crashed to the ground, his knee twisting awkwardly as his leg stayed trapped between Julien’s.

Julien finished his technique, using all his strength to keep Logan’s leg trapped while grabbing his foot and pulling it toward him.

Logan tried to resist, but his leg was completely trapped and under immense pressure.

’’Stop,’’ the female instructor shouted from the sidelines.

Julien turned to look at her before slowly releasing Logan and standing up.

’’Utter trash,’’ Julien said, not even willing to look at Logan anymore. ’’None of these rich boys ever get their hands dirty.’’

Logan stood up, glancing at the disgusted Julien with a slight frown.

’You’d think I murdered his family by looking at his face,’ he thought, catching the clues. ’But it seems like he just hates rich people.’

He shrugged. Not his problem.

The instructor walked up to both of them, typing on her hologram.

’’Both of you performed well,’’ she said, switching her hologram off. ’’Julien, amazing wrestling technique’s. I haven’t seen many who could perform a Kani Basami at your age.’’

Looking over at Logan she continued.

’’You have good insight and read your opponent correctly multiple times. However, it seems you lack the experience to put that insight to good use.’’

Logan nodded, impressed that she had managed to observe so much in only a few minutes.

’’You can go now,’’ she said, gesturing to the benches.

Logan gave her a small nod, climbing off the stage to head to the benches.

’’You’re lucky this wasn’t with mana and weapons,’’ Julien muttered, just loud enough for Logan to hear before heading to the benches.

Shaking his head, Logan ignored him and reviewed the fight.

He knew Julien likely wouldn’t be a threat to him if he could use his mana techniques and affinity.

’I do need to put a larger focus on my footwork and improve the basics,’ Logan thought, sitting down to look at other rings. ’I’m not sure how useful hand-to-hand techniques will be for me later, but footwork and solid fundamentals will always matter.’
