Becoming a Monster-Chapter 64: Overpowered against Zombies
Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Overpowered against Zombies
"He-hey hey, Ishii... Are you sure we should be helping him?" someone inquired, addressing Ishii, who appeared to be in charge of the group. Despite their lack of combat prowess compared to Jasmine and Neal’s group, the sheer number of individuals armed and ready to assist a total stranger caught Noah off guard. At least twenty people stood at the doors, with an even larger group inside.
Ishii, wielding a katana and surprisingly adorned in gear similar to Noah’s full suit, could only stare in disbelief at the scene unfolding before him, his mouth slightly agape. Despite his astonishment, he felt a swell of pride in his own accomplishments, honed through years of training in the way of the sword, steeped in his family’s historic tradition.
However, a seed of doubt crept into Ishii’s mind as he observed Noah’s commanding presence. Perhaps he wasn’t as great a warrior as he had believed. The others’ murmurs about the mysterious individual outside, accompanied by his formidable beast, only served to amplify Ishii’s uncertainty. Despite his skill with the katana and his familial heritage, Ishii couldn’t shake the feeling of inadequacy in the face of Noah’s apparent strength and prowess.
’There’s always someone better...’ Ishii muttered to himself, shaking his head in resignation. He watched as the giant spider by Noah’s side swiftly dispatched the two zombies with its lethal front legs, piercing their skulls with deadly accuracy.
Thinking the fight was over, Ishii approached Noah, driven by his desire to lead a strong and united group. However, his shock had caused him to overlook the presence of more zombies lurking nearby.
Noah, ever vigilant, had never stopped paying attention to the sounds of footsteps approaching. Now that he had fulfilled his objective, he could let his beast do the fighting now. In the back of his mind, Noah contemplated experimenting with his newfound skill, curious to find out just how far his ability can allow him to control zombies.
"Fenrir you’re up!" Noah took a few steps back before Fenrir ran past him excitedly, his massive form kicking up dirt and grass as he raced on all fours.
As the approaching threats rounded the corner, Fenrir wasted no time. With a swift motion, he lunged forward, jaws snapping shut around two of the figures. The sickening sound of bones crunching echoed through the air as Fenrir shook his head feverishly, his powerful jaws exerting relentless pressure. Blood splattered in all directions before he dropped what was left of the bodies in his mouth and rose to standing on his hind legs.
Fenrir’s instincts kicked in as he repeated the familiar actions, much like he did at the gym, swatting away at the zombies with his massive claws. Fenrir was so engaged in his task that he continued moving forward into the group of zombies. However, in his single-minded focus on dispatching the immediate threats, Fenrir inadvertently allowed some of the zombies to slip past him, making their way towards Noah. The blood covering Noah was a tempting attraction for the bloodthirsty zombies, but the larger group behind him proved even more enticing.
"Sigh...what am I going to do with him? Ok Arachne yo-What the fuck is that!?!"
Noah stopped mid sentence when he finally saw the source of the loud footsteps. He saw a grotesquely obese zombie ignoring Fenrir, making its way in his direction, the ground quaking as it drew nearer. The zombie resembled a nightmarish fusion of human and toad, its bulbous form defying all sense of anatomy. Towering nearly seven feet tall and boasting a body width of at least three feet, it seemed utterly impossible for such a grotesque figure to exist. Noah couldn’t comprehend the physical impossibility of its monstrous proportions.
But it was standing before him, the first thing Noah noticed besides its overshadowing size, was the enormity of its mouth since there was still a body sticking out of it. Its jaws appeared capable of dislocating like a snake’s, and could easily stretch to about half its size.
Even with a body sticking out of its mouth, Noah was sure it could still fit him in there as well if he got too close.
"Fenrir! Get your butt back here!" He screamed to get the wolf’s attention, he couldn’t see him past the building, but with Fenrir’s heightened senses, he was sure that the wolf could hear him. And just as he called for him, he could feel a tremor from the ground and a howl coming from the other side. The thought of facing the grotesque zombie alone sent shivers down his spine, and he was unsure if he and Arachne could kill that fat bastard together. It could probably be one of those unique zombies similar to the zombie king, but he called Fenrir back as a precaution.
"Arachne, I need you to stall that thing as long as you can, but avoid its mouth. If you can kill it, then do so. If I can immobilize it, then try to find a way to attack his head. Go!"
Springing into action, Arachne immediately jumped to engage with the enemy while Noah hastily discarded his belongings, including his sword. Retrieving the dagger with the coated tip, Noah knew it wasn’t his preferred weapon, but without his enhanced stats, wielding the sword would only put him in greater danger.
He didn’t run to catch up with Arachne, but took his time to attempt to use his skill and to observe. With his most recent attempt, he felt more confident in his ability to control and manipulate the surrounding zombies, knowing he could defend himself if they attacked.
Meanwhile, a woman approached Ishii, adorned in similar gear but armed with an array of small daggers and knives strapped to her body. "Do you think he needs help now?
Ishii wasn’t sure if they were being sarcastic, but he was definitely wary of Noah’s safety when he saw the fat zombie approaching. The unique zombie was the main reason the group was hesitant to leave the building. Now that Noah is here, maybe they can actually get out of this place. ’But will he let us follow him if we just sit here and watch?’
Ishii began to grow conflicted due to the thought, but then his eyes shined when he noticed something.
"Ishii?"
Ishii turned his head to his group. "Come with me, we have to at least do something!"
When the group noticed the direction he was going, they noticed a small group of rats approaching. Unlike before, the rats were as big as a small dog, yet now they grew a size bigger. Behind them loomed a rat double the size of the others. Despite the menacing appearance of the rats, Ishii encouraged his group to join the fight against them.
Meanwhile, Noah observed the peculiar movements of the students behind him but remained focused on his task. He watched as Arachne leaped towards the side, attempting to bite into the zombie’s flank. However, the zombie showed no signs of being fazed; instead, it tried to grab hold of Arachne, slowly turning to face her.
Arachne swiftly retreated, her front legs leaving gaping holes in the zombie’s side as she moved back. With Arachne out of harm’s way, the fat zombie’s attention shifted toward Noah, accompanied by the hungry gazes of the surrounding zombies. Now that the students behind him were no longer in the picture, all focus turned to him.
Seizing the opportunity, Noah activated his skill once more. Though he preferred not to rely on vocal commands, he had no choice at the moment.
"Stop!" He used the same command as last time, but this time he said it with a bit of frustration. He was upset with himself that he could only rely on his skill to protect himself. His weakness constantly reminded him of his failure to Grim.
Surprisingly, his frustration seemed to amplify his command. Unlike last time, when only two zombies halted in their tracks, the ones rushing toward him now stumbled over each other to obey. Even the fat zombie momentarily froze in place, and Fenrir, who had arrived from the corner of the building, found himself caught in the crossfire of Noah’s ability.
Arachne recalled Noah’s instructions and was determined to execute her task flawlessly. Instead of targeting the head with her front legs, she leaped onto the fat zombie’s back and drove her large, sharp fangs into its brain. If the fangs alone didn’t destroy the brain, she was confident that her venom would finish the job.
Meanwhile, Fenrir quickly shook off his temporary stun. His unique zombie blood, coupled with his bond with Noah, granted him an improved resilience towards the friendly fire.
"Attack their heads dummy!"
Fenrir wasn’t smart enough to destroy the brains like how Arachne was able to pick it up on her own. Noah, feeling a pang of helpless frustration, felt the need to facepalm when he saw the wolf slapping away the frozen zombies.
He looked in confusion about what Noah was asking for, but he noticed that Arachne was jumping to the zombies he had swatted away and stabbed their heads before going to the next.
Fenrir’s tail began to wag excitedly when he understood what his alpha was asking for. He approached one of the zombies standing and bit off the upper half of the zombie and swallowed it. Subtly, he glanced towards Noah while wagging his tail, his eyes bright with anticipation, seeking approval for his actions.
Noah attempted to maintain a stoic expression in response to Fenrir’s efforts, but the beast’s clumsy antics elicited a small smile from him. While Noah chose not to explicitly praise Fenrir after the frustration he had caused, he also refrained from berating him this time. However, Fenrir interpreted Noah’s silence as a sign that he was doing the right thing.
"Awwwhooo!" He howled in excitement. With renewed vigor, Fenrir along with Arachne began to quickly slaughter the zombies in tow.
It wouldn’t be long until they were finished. Noah took a moment to glance towards the students who had run out before and noticed them further away, engaged in a battle with a group of oversized rats. The group seemed to be holding their own, perhaps due to the leadership of the two individuals at the forefront.
Noah observed that whenever someone was in trouble, a small object would come flying through the air to impale the opposing creature. While it might have been difficult for others to spot from such a distance, Noah’s keen eyes didn’t miss a thing.
Further back, Noah spotted the male wielding the katana engaged in combat with the largest rat. The rat stood at least a little taller than four feet, even on all fours. Initially, the fight between the two seemed evenly matched.
The rat proved to be tough, enduring multiple slashes from Ishii, who wielded his weapon with seasoned expertise, something Noah couldn’t help but feel envious of. However, Ishii still had to carefully gauge the proper timing for his attacks. If his strikes weren’t deep enough, the rat could simply ignore them and inflict significant harm.
Then, Noah noticed it: Ishii had assumed a peculiar stance, reminiscent of a samurai preparing for a lethal strike. Yet, Ishii refrained from attacking. It didn’t escape Noah’s keen eyes, something had changed. The rat’s movements slowed significantly, while Ishii’s speed seemed to explode. His agility surpassed even Arachne’s, albeit with a consistent, relentless pace.
Slash after slash, Ishii inflicted wounds upon the rat until it finally staggered and collapsed under the relentless assault.
"Interesting...is it like my ability where I can take Fenrir’s stats and add it to my own? But his ability seems to be much better. Maybe it’s time for me to get another creature...But can I still get one with my skill level"
Noah pondered to himself before losing interest in the other group’s predicament. Observing that Fenrir and Arachne had concluded their task, Noah turned his attention to gathering loot, though a concern nagged at him.
’That was a lot of zombies just now, yet I still didn’t get a notification? How much more does Fenrir need to level up?’
