Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Freshmen Ceremony

"Yes! That bastard’s in the same class as us," Ethan hissed through clenched teeth. "Mark my words, Bella. The moment I recover, I’ll make sure he regrets the day he crossed paths with me!"

Bella cocked her head as she watched the news coverage about Luke. Something about the way he held himself—the little smirk, the assured demeanor- made her heart flutter strangely.

"He doesn’t really look like a hero," Bella mused to herself. "More like...a rogue."

It wasn’t just the White family who was undergoing a steep learning curve as Luke was catapulted into fame.

In the Vadis clan, Neo Vadis sat and simmered in silence, his characteristic cocky persona all but extinguished by a chilling rage.

"How dared this common scum overshadow me?" thought Neo, his hands clenching into fists.

Luke’s popularity posed a serious threat to Neo’s carefully cultivated image; he couldn’t bear the thought of a person without a proper lineage overshadowing him.

"I will crush him," said Neo under his breath, "let’s see how long he’d last if the elite families turned their backs on him."

There was much division among the upper families of the Demon Capital on the issue of Luke. At one extreme, some people saw Luke as the sort of genius they could invest in, saying that his abilities could be very useful for their line and pushing for marriage ties so he would benefit them the most.

At the opposite extreme, there were those would view him as some sort of upstart, displacing old order. This was a case, they insisted, of losing the family honor by yielding to a person of no family.

In the Jones family, the mood is far less explosive.

Morgan Jones was almost glowing with pride. He had seen Luke in action during the Kraken invasion and had been duly impressed.

"Brother Leonard, you saw it, didn’t you?" cried Morgan. "The kid’s a mid-level dual-element full cultivator! And he’s just started! If we bring him to the family..." Leonard Jones, head of the Jones family, sat in silence deep in thought as he considered Morgan’s spirited case.

"He’s still young," Leonard said finally. "If he can achieve high-level mage status on his own, then I’ll consider approving this arrangement."

Morgan frowned, clearly unhappy with the response. "Brother, do you really need more proof? His talent is undeniable!"

But Leonard remained resolute. For him, a union between Luke and Marissa had to bring tangible benefits to the family.

Unaware of the debates his name was sparking, Luke was enjoying a lavish seafood feast at a villa, courtesy of Professor Xavier.

"Teacher, this crab is exquisite," Luke said, tearing into the succulent meat. "It’s not every day you get to eat a runner-up-level beast!"

Professor Xavier chuckled, savoring the fine liquor that accompanied the meal. "You’ve got good taste, Luke. The meat is as tough as the shell—just how I like it!"

The two clinked their glasses, the sound ringing out like a toast to victory.

"I have to say," Professor Xavier began, leaning back in his chair. "Your performance during the Kraken invasion was nothing short of extraordinary. I knew you were talented, but to think you’ve already reached high-level cultivation..."

Luke froze mid-bite, glancing at his teacher. There was no point in denying it; Professor Xavier clearly knew the truth.

"It’s true," Luke admitted.

Professor Xavier sighed, shaking his head. "You’re a prodigy, Luke. A true prodigy. I’ve never been prouder to call someone my student."

The compliment warmed Luke’s heart, but he quickly composed himself. "Thank you, teacher. But there’s one thing I’d like to ask for."

Professor Xavier raised an eyebrow. "Name it."

Luke’s expression turned serious. "I don’t need a reward. Just promise me this—if I’m ever away, watch over the people I care about."

Professor Xavier nodded solemnly. "You have my word."

"Marissa, Zoe, about Luke’s words yesterday?"

Tina Baine bit down on her lips, putting up a pout, her voice tinged with irritation now. "What does he mean by letting the dean protect you if I am not around? Is he going to leave us?"

Marissa Jones sighed lightly. "Tutu, Luke only said that his body may be away, not his heart. I know he cares about us. He is just got things to take care of that we should not have to worry about."

Tina huffed again, crossing her arms. "I know, but that doesn’t change the fact that he seems to always be running off to do some mysterious thing! By the way, where is he? The opening ceremony is on today, and he is nowhere!"

Marissa lightly laughed, stealing a glance at Tina, who was sulking about in sorrow. "He said he had someone to attend to. Don’t expect him to be at this celebration."

What Marissa left unsaid was that Luke was still resting inside her contract space, digesting the essence he’d gathered from their exploits on the Bund, leaving him with no desire to be disturbed.

Tina moped even more. "You know, that’s typical Luke. A freshman missing an opening ceremony. No one can do it like him!"

The trio—Marissa, Zoe Miller, and Tina—entered through the grand campus gates of the Celestial Academy, light filtering through the top of the lofty trees.

Their entrance did not go unnoticed.

Marissa was leading the group, absolutely breathtaking, exuding a quiet confidence. Tina, with her playful ways and daring figure, drew the eye toward whatever direction she chose. Exuding a gentle aura was Zoe, whose placated presence set the trio off to be captivating as a whole.

Most of the young men were mesmerized, as they were seeing the most beautiful women for the first time.

Every boy they passed seemed smitten, their hearts racing, faces flushed. A few even tried their luck at striking up conversations, but they were met with polite refusals.

Still, those brief exchanges were enough for some to boast about for the rest of their college lives.
