Roxy choked out a sob.

Lyra lifted the bundle. He wasn’t a human baby. Not entirely.

He was covered in slick fluids, but underneath, his skin was a soft, pale color. Tiny, black scales dusted his shoulders and his small neck. He had a small, nubby tail that lashed back and forth, and two tiny, soft bumps on his forehead where horns would be.

Lyra cleaned him quickly with a warm cloth Roxy had made and handed him to Roxy.

Roxy took him, and as if sensing his mother, he opened his eyes, and Roxy gasped, a strangled sound that escaped his lips.

The little one’s eyes were brilliant, glowing vertical slits of molten gold. Just like Zarek’s. The baby was heavy, but Roxy didn’t mind. The baby looked up at her, blinked, and let out a little hiccup that released a tiny smoke ring.

Roxy laughed. She laughed until she cried, hugging the scaly little baby to her chest.

I finally birthed my own baby... I finally birthed my own baby.

She sobbed, and everyone watched silently, but no one could understand Roxy’s deepest pain. Shouldn’t she be happy that the baby was in her arms?

Instead, Roxy cried until her eyes were puffy.

"Hi," she whispered, kissing his forehead. "Hi, Drax. You little troublemaker."

Zarek leaned over her shoulder; he was shaking. He looked at the baby as if it were a ticking time bomb that had just gone off.

"He..." Zarek’s voice failed him, and he chuckled. He reached out a finger, touching the baby’s tiny hand. Drax’s hand closed around Zarek’s finger. His grip was shockingly strong.

Zarek let out a sound that was half-sob, half-laugh. He had never seen anything like this before. The baby looked like him, a miniature version of Zarek with his black hair.

"He is strong," Zarek whispered. "He is my hatchling."

"Our Hatchling," Roxy corrected, leaning back into him, the exhaustion biting into her. Lyra was sobbing, but after some time, she quickly cleaned up the place and left, claiming she would be back.

Zarek buried his face into her hair, kissing her temple, her cheek, her neck. Roxy giggled. "You did it. You survived. You are the strongest creature I have ever known."

Roxy smiled, exhausted but triumphant. She really did it.

"Told you," she murmured, her eyes drooping. "Humans are tough."

She looked at her son, and he flashed a small, gummy smile, his eyes blinking back. This moment was perfect.

The sound was like a slot machine hitting the jackpot in Las Vegas.

"It’s okay, Z," Roxy whispered, patting his arm. "It’s just an Amazon delivery. We are going to have a massive unboxingggg."

She cheered, but as soon as she did, Drax stirred and began to wail in discomfort.
