Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 24 Black Card
Ling Xuan groaned in her head in disapproval.
Laurel’s gaze hardened. "All that you have to know is that I didn’t cheat on anybody, nor did I sleep my way into status. All I request is a divorce."
"Liar." Vera spat out.
Jade had a smug look. "Brother Alex, why don’t you divorce her. After all, you don’t need to put up with a slut like her."
Alexander slammed the table, standing up to his feet. "This will be the last time you will talk to my wife in that manner, else I’ll send you out of the mansion, and not only that I’ll send you out of the country." His voice lowered at the end of words.
Jade shut her mouth, her eyes filled with tears.
"Enough!" Grandpa Wayne hit his walking stick on the ground, commanding silence. The hall went instantly quiet. Even Alexander had to sit back in his chair.
When Grandpa Wayne spoke, no one dared to say otherwise. Even in his old age, he commanded fear and respect, the genius who had started the Wayne Corp.
Grandpa Wayne turned to Laurel. "Laurel, I understand your grievance, however, once you are married into the Wayne family, there is no way out. The only way out... is death." His voice sent shivers down Laurel’s spine.
How could someone this old, command so much fear? Laurel wondered. She lowered her head. Her fingers dug into her skin.
"Laurel, my dear. You are the young madam of the Wayne family, I don’t know what my grandson has done to make you feel this way. But I promise he will change, and I promise, no one in this family will ever look down on you again." Grandma Wayne said softly.
Laurel swallowed the lump in her throat. All she really wanted was the divorce, she didn’t want to end up with the man who had sent her to her grave.
"But Grandma, she is seeing another man," Vera said.
"That must be a misunderstanding. Laurel would never do that." Grandma Wayne replied.
She rose from her seat, walking towards Laurel. Grandma Wayne held Laurel’s hands. "I have been keeping an eye on you since the moment Alexander proposed to you. And all I noticed was a nice, decent girl, who isn’t greedy for material things or power. Don’t be too angry, my child." She patted Laure’s hand.
Laurel’s eyes burned. In her past life, everyone had treated her like an invisible fly. No one ever spoke up for her. Then why are they all different now? Why was Alexander holding onto her? His biggest wish was to get rid of her, now that he had the chance, he didn’t want to.
"Here." Grandma Wayne placed a card in her hand.
When Laurel looked at it, she was more than stunned. "A black card?" She asked with widened eyes.
"Yes, as the young madam of the Wayne family, you shouldn’t be bullied in your home, and it is only right that you have one of these. And not only this, you’ll be the one in charge of the family’s house welfare. That is your status." Grandma Wayne said calmly.
"But..."
"It doesn’t matter, the position is rightfully yours. Felicia," Grandma turned to her, her expression turned stern. Felicia quickly straightened her back. "Everything related to the house, will be handed over to Laurel."
Felicia’s face fell. "Yes, mother." She said through gritted teeth.
"Grandmother you don’t have to," Laurel said quickly. What she needed now was to stockpile, she didn’t have the time to take care of the household. And if she accepted the position, she would be obligated to save the family from the apocalypse.
After all, only a handful of them survived during the apocalypse. Grandma Wayne, Grandpa Wayne, Vera, Tina, and Felicia, none of them had survived.
"Don’t be nervous. They are all yours now." Grandma Wayne said with a faint smile, before retracting her hands to her side. She turned and walked back to her seat.
Laurel stared at the card in her hand, it was so tempting that she almost drooled over them. She snapped out of her daze, although this was what she needed, she should appear so easy to be bought.
"Grandma, I appreciate your kindness, however I can’t accept this." She said.
"It is yours, it is up to what you do with it." Grandpa Wayne replied in a cold tone. His sharp eyes stared at Laurel, as if he was indirectly telling her that she had no other choice.
Alexander, who had been quiet all this while, cleared his throat. "Grandma, I support your decision." He said with a faint smile that appeared on his lips so fast that Laurel missed it.
"Just accept the money. I’ll find a way to get rid of him." Ling Xuan said calmly.
"Okay," Laurel replied.
She turned to Grandma Wayne. "Thank you for the gift, Grandma, then I won’t hesitate to use it."
Grandma Wayne smiled at her return.
Tina turned to the angry Vera. "Aunty Vera, does this mean Aunty Laurel won’t be leaving anymore?"
Vera glared at her. "No, unfortunately." She replied through gritted teeth.
"Yeah!" Tina exclaimed happily, before taking a bite of her strawberry.
The air thickened with unsaid malice and jealousy.
Laurel stood up from her seat. "I’ll be taking my leave now, I have somewhere to be." She said, grabbing an apple from the table. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
"At least tell me where you are going," Alexander said, a little too concerned.
"Shopping." She waved the card in the air, as if asking if it wasn’t obvious.
"I’ll send someone to drive you there," Alexander added.
"No need, I’ll go alone." She wasn’t stupid enough to let him send a spy to monitor her movement.
...
Laurel bobbed her head to the hip-hop song she was playing in her car. She wore a pair of glasses. She glanced at the black card again, and she felt a river of happiness flowing inside her.
She began singing along. Although she was never a hip-hop fan, today was such a great day that she couldn’t help but sing along.
