Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 23 Chaos in the Dining Hall
It was two days before the extreme hot weather. Laurel sat in the dining room along with the Wayne family.
Eating together was the norm set by the elder of the family, they claimed it brings the family closer together. However, Laurel highly doubts it, as it was what was dividing the family... Perhaps, she felt that way because she was never considered family by them.
Moreover, another strange thing had happened. Alexander Wayne, who always claimed he was busy and never had the time to eat together with the family, broke his streak today.
Laurel glanced to her side, Alexander was diligently eating his chef-made omelet. She almost grimaced before staring at the rest of the family, sitting around a long table, the maids silently served the food, and poured drinks where they were requested.
Grandpa Wayne, and Grandma Wayne sat at the head of the table.
The silence in the dining hall broke when Jade opened her mouth. "We had married someone into this family, for the sake of our reputation. But who knew the dog we picked from the street would suddenly grow fangs and bite the hand that fed it?" Jade’s words dripped with venom as she glanced at Laurel.
Cutlery clattered against ceramic plates as she finished her words.
"What are you trying to say, Aunty Jade?" Tina innocently said, her eyes widened in curiosity.
Jade pushed her chest out, tilting her chin up slightly. "Laurel, why did you punch Mr. Wayne’s face? I have never seen a wife treat her husband in such a way. Aren’t you afraid we will drop you off? How dare you act arrogantly?!" She huffed.
Laurel dropped the cutlery in her hand. This was the spark she needed, and now that Jade had given it to her, she would play along to add enough fuel for it to blow up.
"I punched him," Laurel said calmly. "So what?"
Alexander, who was so focused on his food, lifted his head. His eyes narrowed at Jade. He hadn’t gotten any sleep last night, especially not when Laurel wanted a divorce.
He had joined breakfast so he could get closer to her. Strangely, he had been feeling that he didn’t know her enough.
But the talk was salt on his wound.
"Enough, Jade. This is between me and her, you don’t need to interfere in it." Alexander replied curtly, silencing everyone in the room with his gaze.
Laurel turned to him. "She is right. That is not something I should do. That is disrespectful to you... and look at your face, I almost ruined it." She said sarcastically, then she paused, before continuing. "Why don’t you divorce me?"
As soon as the words came out of her mouth. Jade slammed her hand on the table. "Agreed! We should divorce her."
Felicia nodded in agreement. Soon, the dining hall was covered in noise, as the family said what was on their mind.
"What does that mean?" Tina asked Vera who sat beside her.
"It means, Laurel will no longer be your uncle’s wife and she will no longer be in this family," Vera replied nonchalantly, raising a cup of tea to her lips before blowing on it, taking a sip.
Grandmother Wayne’s expression turned to a worried one as she glanced at Laurel and Alexander.
Before she could speak, Alexander’s voice thundered across the room. "Silence."
The hall became so quiet as everyone zipped up their lips.
He turned to Laurel, his eyes burning with hurt. "Do you really love him that much?"
Laurel’s fingers froze on the napkin. For a second the whole table went quiet.
Gasps echoed across the table.
"Him? There is a man?" Felicia almost screeched.
"Laurel, you have the guts to cheat on my brother?" Vera, who had been acting nonchalantly so far, finally lost her cool.
Felicia slammed her palm on the table. "I knew it! I knew she was shameless!"
Jade scoffed loudly. "What else did you expect? A woman like her can’t stay loyal. She only knows how to climb through men."
The noise rose again, louder than before. Plates clinked, chairs scraped, and even the maids froze in place, unsure if they should keep serving food or disappear.
Laurel remained seated, her expression calm, but her fingers tightened slightly around the napkin on her lap.
"You’re all talking too much," Laurel said flatly.
Felicia leaned forward. "Then explain it! Who is the man?"
Laurel’s lips curved faintly. "Since when did I owe you an explanation?"
"You...!!" Felicia almost choked.
Alexander’s jaw tightened. His grip around the fork in his hand became so strong that his knuckles turned white.
He didn’t even know why he was angry. He only knew that the thought of Laurel being with another man made his chest feel tight.
He stared at her like he was trying to peel her open and see the truth. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
"Laurel," he called, his voice low. "Answer me."
Laurel finally turned her gaze to him. Her eyes were cold and sharp, nothing like the soft woman he remembered.
"Just divorce me, and we will be over with this," Laurel said, her heart skittering in her chest. After all, she once loved him.
But even if she wanted a divorce she didn’t want someone to smear dirt on her name. She would still get a divorce even if she told the truth.
"Do you want the truth?" she asked.
Alexander didn’t reply, but his stare told her everything.
Laurel nodded slowly. "Fine."
She leaned back in her chair and spoke casually, as if she were discussing the weather.
"I didn’t cheat on you."
Vera laughed in disbelief. "Then why did you slap Camile? And why did you punch Alexander? Don’t tell me you’re suddenly possessed again!"
Tina blinked. "Aunty Laurel is not possessed..."
"Shut up, Tina." Jade snapped.
Tina shrank back, her small hands tightening around her spoon.
"Laurel, let me handle it from here. You are too cool for them." Ling Xuan’s voice suddenly rang in her head.
"No, I’ll take care of the situation myself." Laurel refused. "Trust me."
