Chapter 241 - 217 Leo Garrick Plays Rad Racers
Saturday, March 22, 1992
After arriving home, Leo Garrick eagerly unpacked his ZEPS. But before setting it up, he carefully displayed all 27 of his new games, his eyes lighting up with excitement. "Whoa! The box art looks so cool! Damn!" he exclaimed, running his fingers over each cover. He admired the intricate designs and bold typography, feeling a rush of excitement.
With anticipation, he opened his ZEPS and flipped through the guidebook to set it up properly. He took his time connecting the system, making sure every wire was in place. After some adjustments, the system was finally ready. "Finally! Now, which game should I play first...?" He pondered for a moment, torn between Castlevania and Rad Racers. "Hmm... I'll go with Rad Racers first!" he decided, feeling an urge to experience high-speed thrills.
Leo picked up the Rad Racers box, admiring the cover art depicting a red car drifting on an asphalt road. The dynamic motion of the artwork made it feel alive, as if the car was about to burst out of the box. Opening it, he found four items inside:
The game cartridgeA game manualZEPS Global Volume 1A black and gray Z card
Curious, he inspected each item one by one, flipping through the game manual and taking a quick glance at the ZEPS Global Volume. But the black and gray Z card caught his attention the most. "What's this card?" he muttered as he examined it. The material was different from regular paper—sturdier, almost metallic. Turning it over, he noticed a mysterious message on the back.
"Try looking for some messages on the side. Remember them, and you will meet me."
Leo frowned, confused. "What does that even mean? Well, I guess it'll make sense after I play the game."
With that, he inserted the Rad Racers cartridge and powered on the system. The screen flickered before an 8-bit cutscene played, showing a red car racing against sleek yellow and purple cars on a narrow road. The red car was in the lead, drifting skillfully before the scene transitioned to the game's main menu. The title "RAD RACER!" flashed on the screen as catchy music played, pumping up the adrenaline. The menu presented two options: Start and Continue. Without hesitation, Leo pressed Start.
A new scene appeared, introducing his first opponent in an 8-bit cinematic. The car was a sleek blue sedan resembling the Mazda RX-7 that would be released in 1995 in Zaboru's previous life. The blue car sped up before breaking and sliding into position. A name appeared on the screen: "Keisuke Takahashi - ZAGE RZ-9."

"Oh? Is that a real-world car or an original design for the game?" Leo wondered, admiring the detailed pixel art.
The game then prompted: "Beat Keisuke Takahashi and his ZAGE RZ-9 in a 3-lap race!" The track name appeared—Kuwana Highway (Night) , a narrow highway with a bunch of trees beside it. The screen transitioned, and the race began.
Leo, filled with excitement, gripped his controller tightly. A total of eight racers were on the track, each with different colored cars. The announcer counted down, and Leo held his breath. "Three... Two... One... Race!"
As the race started, an 8-bit version of "GAS GAS"—a song Zaboru had created in this world—began playing. The fast-paced melody blended perfectly with the rush of the race. The pixelated headlights of the cars flickered as they sped through the neon-lit highway.
Leo grinned. "Oh! It's the game version of that song from the AD!"
The gameplay was exhilarating. The graphics were impressive, and the soundtrack was fantastic. He was especially amazed by how responsive the controls felt. The way the car handled was smooth yet challenging, rewarding precise movement. He maneuvered his car carefully, weaving between opponents as he quickly climbed to third place, closing in on the top two racers. But then—a sharp turn!
Leo knew he could drift by pressing X and O together while steering with the D-pad he read in the game manual. He attempted a drift, but his timing was slightly off, causing his car to skid wider than he intended. He barely avoided crashing into the guardrail. "Damn! That was close!" he muttered, adjusting his grip on the controller.
His opponent, Keisuke Takahashi, was just ahead of him, his blue ZAGE RZ-9 maintaining an impressive speed. The AI was surprisingly competent, blocking Leo's attempts to overtake. Leo adjusted his approach, carefully studying Keisuke's racing pattern. "Alright, let's see how you handle this," he whispered, pressing forward.
With each lap, Leo's control over the drifting mechanics improved. He could feel himself getting better, reacting faster to turns and finding the perfect balance between speed and control. As the final lap approached, he was neck and neck with Keisuke. The crowd in the background—tiny pixelated figures—seemed to cheer as the two cars battled for first place.
But in the final stretch, Leo made a critical mistake. He misjudged the last corner, losing just enough speed for Keisuke to pull ahead and cross the finish line first.
"Whoa! Damn, I lost! But it's just the beginning. I'll get better!" he said, exhilarated rather than disappointed. "Damn!, this is way more than i expected!, it's worth every penny!"
Determined to improve, he continued playing, eager to master the game's mechanics. The thrill of the race, the challenge of perfecting drifts, and the mystery of the Z card filled him with excitement. Whatever secrets lay hidden in this game, he was ready to uncover them.
To be continued.
