American Tax Officer-Chapter 672 - 338: ’Storm Retaliation Begins
Chapter 672: Chapter 338: ‘Storm’ Retaliation Begins
In the remaining days, the fervor surrounding the congressional hearing scandal remained high, and the humiliated members of Congress were repeatedly ridiculed and flagellated online, becoming a joke within American politics.
And the Freemasons, who had painstakingly prepared for a counterattack, were left with nothing to show for it but laughter, naturally infuriating them half to death.
Henrietta even convened all members, reprimanding those involved directly to their faces, and made them reflect on how the group should respond next.
The date was October 23rd.
At 10 a.m. that morning, Kepel Quan knocked and entered, saying, “Sir, White House Chief of Staff Wylder is here to see you.”
“Wylder?”

David set down the document, a flicker of surprise passing through his gaze before he replied, “Alright, bring him in.”
Not long after, Chief of Staff Wylder was led in. Upon seeing David, he clicked his tongue in admiration and said, “Inspector David, you’ve really made quite the stir these past few days!”
“It’s nothing, one gets used to it.”
David knew he was referring to the hearing and responded with a calm demeanor.
“You single-handedly created the most embarrassing congressional hearing in our history in America Congress. In the decades, if not centuries to come, nobody will forget your name when they think of congressional hearings.”
“Who knows what the future holds, now, Chief of Staff Wylder, you’re basically the manager of the entire nation from the White House, so today’s visit can’t just be for a simple chat, can it?”
Wylder sat down, crossed his legs, and with a somewhat playful expression, said, “Inspector David, do you remember what I mentioned to you at the last dinner?”
“Are you referring to… the welfare legislation?”
Wylder pulled out a document from his inner pocket and slid it across to David, saying, “Yes, we have a rough outline of the bill, take a look and see what you think.”
David picked it up and started to carefully read through it.
Seven or eight minutes later, he had skimmed through the content.
This legislation was named the ‘Childcare Bill’, and as the name indicates, it proposed a bill where government financial assistance would be provided to American citizens during pregnancy, childbirth, and the subsequent growth phases of their children.
One must understand that America’s fertility rate is not as low as Russia’s or Stick Country’s, so naturally, the government doesn’t encourage and subsidize childbirth as much as these countries do.
Therefore, if the White House were to introduce this bill, the level of popularity and support it received could well be imagined.
But on the flip side, America ranks third globally in population size. To push through this bill wouldn’t be a matter of spending just a few hundred billion; once citizens were stirred up by the legislation, the requisite funds could turn into a bottomless pit…
“What’s the matter, Inspector David, is there an issue?”
“Forgive my bluntness, Chief of Staff Wylder, but the fiscal expenditure for this bill is no small sum; I’m afraid even I would find it difficult to handle.”
“If you can’t handle it, then no one in all of America could!”
“Chief of Staff Wylder, are you giving me an order?”
Wylder was taken aback, realizing he might have upset David, and he hurriedly explained, “Of course not, this is just a small vision from the White House. If Inspector David were to help us achieve it, the President would be very grateful to you.”
“Previously, I did my utmost to assist you with the W Act on behalf of the White House, yet afterwards, I seem to have received no favorable statement from your side.”
To be honest, since the hearing scandal broke out, David had not held much affection towards the White House.
By rights, he had put maximum effort into the W Act, allowing the White House to reach its policy and strategic goals through the funds he’d helped obtain.
But then, when the hearing scandal erupted, and the White House faced a barrage of questions from reporters demanding a statement, they offered no support for the Internal Revenue Service, skillfully dodging the issue.
Of course, he understood that the White House definitely did not want to get wrapped up in such an affair.
But with that said, if the White House didn’t want to pick a side and yet expected him to help raise the money, they were playing their cards a little too perfectly. Did they think him a fool to be used at their convenience?
There was a hint of embarrassment in Wylder as well.
He certainly caught the underlying meaning in David’s words, which was nothing short of a jab at the White House for not issuing a supportive statement after the hearing scandal.
But he had no other option because the relationship between the Ansa Group and David had already deteriorated, and with Freemasonry openly out to target David, the White House naturally couldn’t publicly support him.
However, if the White House wanted to win re-election in two years’ time, they had to win back public support.
And to gain the support of the people, they needed to introduce welfare legislation. Since the legislation required funding and America’s economy was in a dire state, they were reliant on David to raise such funds.
This was also why he, as the prestigious Chief of Staff of the White House, upon sensing David’s dissatisfaction, was explaining so politely.
Otherwise, had anyone else dared to act so brazenly in his presence, he would have already left in a huff and returned to the White House to devise ways to make things difficult for them!
“Cough cough…”
Wylder cleared his throat, easing the awkward atmosphere, and then said, “In truth, the White House has our challenges too, but since you’ve already spoken openly, and considering the President sent me here with sincerity, I’ll be frank. Inspector David, would you be interested in becoming the head of the Internal Revenue Service?”
