After Betrayal: Lightning Marriage to Mr. Enigmatic-Chapter 935: Digging Coal Since Childhood
What’s more, Zoe Lewis knew that the Lewis Family was very wealthy and was not surprised by the luxurious decoration. What surprised her was Ryker Lewis.
Ryker Lewis didn’t have even a trace of the nouveau riche demeanor. He had a gentle and refined temperament, spoke very little, but seemed very easy to get along with. He was nothing like a nouveau riche who made a fortune from coal mines; instead, he seemed more like someone from an artistic background.
No wonder Ryker had such an outstanding temperament; his father was so good-looking.
In comparison, Mrs. Lewis seemed quite ordinary, but one could tell she was living a very happy life. It was obvious she had been pampered by her husband, which was why she had such an open and enthusiastic personality.
Zoe Lewis was taken into the living room by Mrs. Lewis, and the two of them hit it off very quickly. Before long, the servants began setting up lunch.
A large table of steaming dishes made Zoe Lewis deeply feel respected and valued.
The Left family did not have the rule of staying silent during meals. At the dining table, Mrs. Lewis continued to chat happily with Zoe, eating and talking at the same time, which helped foster their bond.
Moreover, Zoe soon learned a few of Ryker’s little habits and preferences from Mrs. Lewis. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
For example, he really liked to eat carrots and green radishes.
For example, he didn’t like to eat cilantro.
Zoe had already discovered his love for carrots. He liked them whether they were raw or cooked.
But cilantro, she remembered him eating as well.
He really didn’t like it? So, when they went on picnics together, he forced himself to eat the cilantro in his bowl?
She had a habit of adding a bit of cilantro to various soups for flavor.
Why hadn’t he ever said anything if he didn’t like it?
Mrs. Lewis didn’t realize that Zoe was intentionally digging into Ryker’s information. She thought Zoe cared about her son and shared everything she knew.
"Why does he like mining so much? Isn’t it a very dirty and labor-intensive job?"
"Precisely because it’s labor-intensive, he feels he can vent his negative emotions through it, so he likes it."
Mrs. Lewis sighed slightly: "Moreover, when he was very young, our family didn’t have any money. After school, he would go with adults to mine coal to earn money. His little hands were covered with blisters, but he never told me. He would pop them himself, wrap them in cloth, and continue digging. He was especially determined."
Zoe’s heart twinged as she listened. He worked so hard! Starting from such a young age?
"Wasn’t that child labor? Doesn’t the state prohibit employing child labor?" Zoe actually wanted to ask how they could agree to let Ryker mine coal, as it was dangerous and arduous. But she didn’t feel like she had the right to criticize his parents, so she blamed the state instead.
"It was prohibited, but no one really supervised such things back then. Many kids went to the mines to help with household expenses. Ryker was especially obedient and capable, so the mine boss liked him a lot."
Zoe found this very heartbreaking. She always thought she had lived a rather aggrieved and difficult life, but after all, she had been under the shelter of the Lewis Family and had never experienced truly poverty-stricken life.
She didn’t expect Ryker to have endured such hardship in his childhood.
"That’s why Ryker is a bit frugal now. He doesn’t like spending money on others and lives very frugally himself because he knows how hard earning money is. Don’t blame him. It’s actually our fault for not raising him properly."
Mrs. Lewis had never seen her son spend a penny on a girl. She thought this was one of the main reasons he had never had a girlfriend.
In the past, when girls gave him gifts, he never accepted them nor returned gifts. Mrs. Lewis was worried that her son would do the same with Zoe and drive her away, so she took all the blame upon herself, hoping Zoe wouldn’t have a bad impression of her son.
