Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Fight Fire with Fire

Moira Sloan met Cassie Blanchett’s request with a slight arch of her brow, but she didn’t refuse.

They didn’t talk at the Jennings Estate.

Instead, they arranged to meet at a coffee shop.

In an elegant private room, two women sat facing each other over two cups of coffee.

Both were composed individuals. It wasn’t until they were halfway through their coffee that Cassie Blanchett slowly spoke. "Boss Sloan, first of all, I’m very sorry about what happened between you and Shane Jennings."

Cassie Blanchett offered an apology, but her posture was one of immense pride.

It wasn’t intentional, but rather a product of her upbringing.

A true darling of fortune, she was born in Corinthus with a silver spoon in her mouth, the star around which everyone else orbited as she grew up.

Hearing this, Moira Sloan simply arched an eyebrow and smiled faintly. "Hm?" 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Cassie Blanchett couldn’t get a read on Moira’s attitude. She tried her best to appear composed—a habit honed from her years in the business world. She didn’t want to turn things ugly unless absolutely necessary. "If it weren’t for our families’ alliance, the two of you wouldn’t have been split up."

Moira Sloan replied with an easy smile, looking as if she hadn’t taken it to heart in the slightest. "You can’t tear apart people who are truly in love. If they can be separated, then they weren’t in love to begin with."

Seeing Moira’s candid expression, Cassie didn’t let anything show on her face, but inwardly, she heaved a long sigh of relief.

Next, Cassie took a tactical sip of her coffee. After another moment, perhaps because she wasn’t accustomed to dealing with romantic rivals and affairs of the heart, she took a deep breath, pulled a USB drive from her bag, and handed it to Moira.

Seeing what Cassie was handing her, Moira’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Cassie began to explain, "On my wedding day, someone mailed me this USB drive."

Moira reached out, took it, and toyed with it in her hand. "What is it?"

Cassie said, "Shane Jennings has a suite in his name at The Continental. The USB drive shows that you entered this suite the day before our wedding."

The Continental. The hotel Moira had been staying at recently.

’The day before Shane Jennings’s wedding?’

’Oh, I went to Rachel Yates’s room that day.’

’So it was registered under Shane Jennings’s name.’

’Interesting.’

’I had originally thought Rachel Yates was apologizing out of a guilty conscience, afraid that I would retaliate. I never expected she was actually digging such a huge pit for me.’

’This scheme really isn’t all that clever, though.’

’But it’s often these less-than-clever schemes that actually work.’

’The truly brilliant ones just make people suspicious.’

Moira tapped her finger on the USB drive. Without a word, she took her phone out of her pocket and played a recording.

"Moira, I honestly didn’t mean to frame you back then. It was all because my dad was sick and needed a huge amount of money for surgery. I had no money, and just then, a rival company approached me. They told me to frame you and said they’d give me a sum of money..."

"But I swear, I never thought the consequences would be this severe! I thought that with your reputation in this industry, you could just explain things, and it would all blow over..."

"Why didn’t you say all this sooner?"

"I was afraid you’d blame me... I was too ashamed to face you... I was afraid you wouldn’t forgive me..."

...

When the recording finished, Moira gave a lazy smile. "I did go to a room that day, but I had no idea it was Shane Jennings’s room. Besides, the person I met in that room wasn’t Shane Jennings."

Rachel Yates was in Cassie’s bridal party. There was no way Cassie wouldn’t recognize Rachel’s voice.

On top of that, the incident where Rachel had denounced Moira had caused a huge stir in their circle. Even if Cassie didn’t go looking for gossip, such talk would have eventually reached her ears.

Cassie’s face paled slightly. "That was Rachel Yates?"

Moira put her phone away. "President Blanchett, we’ve never interacted before, so it’s perfectly normal that you don’t know me. In fact, you never would have needed to, since our paths were never meant to cross. But because of Shane Jennings, you now need to understand me, at least a little. For example, when it comes to relationships, I’m passionate when I’m in love and ruthless when I’m not. I absolutely do not get back with exes."

Cassie pressed her lips together.

Moira continued, "As for other women, that’s your family’s business. It’s not my place as an outsider to say much."

Cassie’s hand, resting on her coffee cup, tightened.

Having said all she needed to, Moira saw no reason to stay. She slid the USB drive across the table back to Cassie, not bothering to look at its contents, and stood up to leave.

Just before walking out of the private room, she looked back at Cassie with a dazzling smile. "President Blanchett, you’re an outstanding woman, in terms of both looks and family background. If I were a man, I would definitely be captivated by you."

As Moira finished speaking, Cassie suddenly looked up, meeting her sincere gaze.

When Moira Sloan came out of the coffee shop, Connor Quinn was waiting at the entrance.

Seeing Connor, Moira first froze for a second, then felt a wave of frustration.

Shane Jennings’s wedding was over. She had planned to end her relationship with Connor Quinn.

But how to bring it up had become a problem.

’Just say it directly?’

’Based on my brief interactions with Connor Quinn, he would most likely refuse.’

’Should I use some kind of trick?’

’For that to work, I’d probably have to pull a new "potential boyfriend" out of a hat.’

Moira didn’t say anything to Connor. Instead, she walked around the car and got straight into the passenger seat. After setting down her handbag and watching Connor get in, she suddenly curled her red lips into a smile and said, "Connor Quinn, your sister needs surgery. How about I give you a sum of money?"
