Chapter 67: Chapter 67: She Doesn’t Love You

A jealous man breeds hostility, and hostility sparks a war.

As Connor Quinn finished speaking, Shane Jennings’s hands balled into fists at his sides. After a long moment, he reached into his pocket for his cigarettes. With trembling hands, he stuck one between his lips, lit it, and rasped, "She doesn’t love you."

It was as if saying those words had drained all of Shane Jennings’s strength.

His voice shook, and so did the hand holding the cigarette.

He peered at Connor Quinn’s face through the hazy smoke, desperately searching for any hint of a reaction that might make him feel better.

But Connor Quinn was perfectly composed, betraying no emotion whatsoever.

Seeing this, Shane Jennings clenched his teeth around the cigarette. "You..."

"Does it matter?" Connor Quinn asked.

Shane Jennings choked, the smoke catching in his throat.

Connor Quinn looked down to fill his glass again, his voice cold. "She doesn’t have to love me. As long as she stays with me, that’s enough."

Shane Jennings coughed, the smoke searing his throat and lungs. A hazy pain spread through his chest.

After filling his glass, Connor Quinn shot a sharp look at Shane Jennings. Between his height advantage and Shane’s already defeated posture, the glance was utterly condescending. "She did love you once. What good did that do?"

Every one of Connor Quinn’s words was a dagger to the heart.

If his words were knives, Shane Jennings would already be bleeding from a thousand cuts.

It wasn’t until the middle of the night that Moira Sloan finally processed everything.

Drowsily, she fiercely pinched the arm of the man beside her, the one wrapped around her waist.

The man grunted in pain but didn’t let go. Instead, he pulled her even tighter.

「The next day.」

Although Shane Jennings and Cassie Blanchett were the newlyweds, it was Connor Quinn and Moira Sloan who seemed inseparable.

Breakfast had the appearance of a happy family gathering, with three generations enjoying each other’s company.

In reality, everyone had their own hidden agenda.

After the meal, Madam Jennings called Moira Sloan into her room. Without preamble, she simply handed her a bracelet.

Moira Sloan had seen this bracelet before. Laura Cheney had one just like it.

’If I’m not mistaken, this one was supposed to have been for Connor Quinn’s mother.’

Moira Sloan knew why it had never been given to her.

’Class prejudice.’

"Moira."

Madam Jennings called her name when she saw Moira still hadn’t taken it.

Moira Sloan snapped out of her thoughts and offered a gentle smile. "Grandma, I can’t accept this bracelet."

Having known Moira Sloan for seven years, Madam Jennings was well aware of how perceptive she was. Hearing her refusal, she smiled. "Are you afraid it will make Connor unhappy?" 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

Moira replied, "I can’t wrong him."

"Wrong him?" Madam Jennings repeated.

This wasn’t the first time Moira Sloan had met Madam Jennings. She spoke frankly, her lips curving into a smile that seemed innocent but was laden with meaning. "To forgive on his behalf what he cannot forgive... isn’t that wronging him?"

Upon hearing this, a flicker of pain crossed Madam Jennings’s eyes. She sighed softly and withdrew her hand. "Did he tell you everything?"

Moira beamed. "He didn’t. Everything I’ve heard has been rumors, just bits and pieces."

Then, worried that Madam Jennings was about to elaborate, Moira quickly added, "And please, don’t you tell me either. I don’t want to know."

’I’ve already decided that once we get back, Connor and I will go our separate ways. I don’t want to know too much about him.’

’The more I know, the harder it will be to leave.’

Leaving Madam Jennings’s room, Moira Sloan let out a breath of relief.

’The old woman is as sharp as they come. I was so afraid she’d see that something was wrong.’

After steadying her breathing, Moira Sloan started down the stairs. Just as she reached the second-floor landing, she ran right into Cassie Blanchett, who was coming out of her bedroom.

Their eyes met. Cassie Blanchett’s expression was bleak. She pursed her lips and was the first to speak. "Moira Sloan, do you have a moment? I’d like to talk."
