Chapter 112: Black Card and Smirks

Delphinia’s lips twitched into a sarcastic smile while her thoughts swirled in disbelief. What kind of spell or magic did Adalaine use to actually get Kai to marry her? she wondered with a scoff. No, she wasn’t jealous. The hell with them both. Adalaine wasn’t even from some grand, noteworthy background. Just a normal, everyday family. The Robinson family would never approve of something like this—what changed?

The mall bustled around her with soft chatter and the occasional rustle of shopping bags, yet Delphinia’s focus was drawn to the two familiar figures standing nearby. She clutched Kai’s arm tightly, her voice sharp and irritating like nails on a chalkboard. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"Delphinia," Adalaine said with a smirk that practically dripped with venom, "you really have to come to our wedding." She tossed her hair over her shoulder in a manner that screamed superiority. "I want you to see what a real wedding reception looks like."

The words sliced through the air like a knife, making Delphinia’s thoughts drift back to her own wedding with Kai. Her chest tightened momentarily at the memory. At that time, Adalaine had attended as a guest, but there had been something unsettling about her behavior. Even then, Delphinia hadn’t understood why Adalaine had looked at her with hate.

She clenched her fists slightly, though her expression remained cool and collected. She remembered the embarrassment of that night—the way Adalaine had "accidentally" poured a drink onto her dress in front of everyone, how the stain had spread like wildfire and drawn curious stares.

Only later, on her wedding night, did Delphinia discover the bitter truth: Adalaine wasn’t just a petty guest. She was Kai’s mistress. She had walked in on them in her bed.

Jerks. Both of them. A faint, humorless laugh escaped her lips.

"Of course I’ll come," Delphinia replied. Her eyes glinted sharply as they met Adalaine’s. "And Kai," she added, shifting her gaze to him, "make sure you fulfill all your responsibilities to your new wife. Don’t leave her with nothing."

Kai’s jaw tightened as his lips pressed into a thin line. He shifted uncomfortably, but before he could speak, Delphinia turned away, her eyes wandering back to the store’s displays.

The soft smell of leather and floral perfume hung in the air as Delphinia pointed out two bags she’d been checking out. They were exquisite—classic designs that exuded luxury. She gestured toward the store clerk, who came forward with the smooth efficiency of a pro.

"I’ll take these two," she said. With effortless grace, she slid a sleek black card out of her purse.

The store clerk’s eyes widened slightly at the sight of it, but she quickly composed herself, bowing politely as she took the card. "Right away, ma’am," she said before scurrying off to process the purchase.

Delphinia smiled inwardly, her fingers brushing against her purse as she thought of Evander. He had handed her the card earlier that morning when she told him about her plan to buy gifts for his family. She had hesitated at first, wishing she could use her own money, but he had insisted.

She glanced back at Adalaine and Kai, who were both staring at her, their expressions a mixture of surprise and disbelief. The shiny black card had clearly struck a nerve.

Kai frowned deeply, his brows furrowing as he exchanged a glance with Adalaine. Adalaine, on the other hand, looked livid. Her lips pursed into a thin line before she spoke, her voice sharp and mocking.

"What kind of job do you have now, Delphinia?" Adalaine asked, her tone dripping with condescension. "To be able to afford something like that?" She let out a cold laugh. "Or did you get that from some old, rich man you’re escorting now?"

For just a moment, her grip on the purse tightened, though her face didn’t show anything. She tilted her head slightly, her lips curling into a calm yet pointed smile.

"Well," she began, her voice steady and composed, "I wouldn’t expect you to understand how hard work and dignity can lead to success." Her eyes flicked over Adalaine and then to Kai. "It’s a foreign concept to some, I suppose."

Kai’s expression darkened as he stepped forward, his hand shooting out to point directly at Delphinia. "Shut your mouth, Delphinia," he snapped, his voice low but brimming with anger.

Delphinia’s eyes narrowed as she swatted his hand away with a sharp motion, her palm striking it just hard enough to make a point. "Don’t you dare point at me like that," she snarled. Her calm demeanor was replaced with fiery defiance, her gaze locking onto his with unyielding strength.

"Kai, stop," Adalaine interjected, grabbing his arm and pulling it back. Her voice was softer but laced with manipulation. "Don’t waste your energy on her. Arguing with someone like her will only tarnish your good name."

At that, Delphinia’s lips parted in a sharp laugh, startling both of them. She took a step back, clutching her purse tightly against her side, her laughter carrying through the boutique and drawing the attention of nearby customers and employees. "Oh my god," she said between chuckles, wiping a mock tear from her eye. "Good name? Are you serious? That’s hilarious."

Kai’s jaw tightened, his face beginning to flush a deep shade of red as the gazes of onlookers burned into him.

Delphinia’s laughter subsided, though her grin remained. "Let me tell you something, Adalaine," she said, her voice cool and sharp. "Your man here isn’t exactly the paragon of virtue you’re painting him to be. What good name? He’s just a jobless man still hiding behind his parents’ money. Is that what you call dignity?"

The store fell silent, save for the faint background music, as all eyes turned to Kai. His fists tightened, his jaw set as his teeth scraped audibly against each other. The humiliation on his face was clear, and the workers behind the counter exchanged uneasy glances.

"You’ll regret this, Delphinia," Kai said through gritted teeth, his voice low and menacing. "I’ll repay this humiliation. Just wait."

Delphinia tilted her head, her expression unfazed by his threat. She crossed her arms, her posture relaxed, and her smile returned—this time with a mocking edge. "Humiliation? What humiliation?" she asked, feigning confusion. "I only spoke the truth. If the truth embarrasses you, well... maybe you should think about why that is."

Adalaine’s face turned an unflattering shade of red, and she opened her mouth to retort, but Delphinia cut her off.

"I’ll leave you to it, I have more shopping to do," Delphinia said as she gestured toward the clerk, who had returned with her purchases neatly wrapped.

She turned around as she allowed herself a small, victorious smile.
