Chapter 111: Not-So-Chance Encounter

The mall was alive with people chatting and laughing as Delphinia made her way through the crowd. She carried two neatly packed shopping bags in one hand, her other hand trailing along the edge of a clothing rack as she browsed through a store.

Her purpose today was simple: to pick up some thoughtful gifts for her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and Julian. No, this wasn’t a bribe, she told herself, smiling faintly at the thought. It was just a small gesture, a way to show that she cared about her new family.

She had already settled on elegant shirts for her father-in-law and Julian—classic yet elegant choices that suited their personalities. Now, she was on a mission to find a perfect handbag for her mother-in-law.

Delphinia entered a boutique with gleaming glass displays showcasing an array of luxurious handbags. A store clerk, dressed impeccably in a tailored uniform, approached her with a polite smile.

"Good afternoon, ma’am. How can I assist you today?" the clerk asked said with a friendly smile.

"I’m looking for something special, perhaps from your newest collection," Delphinia replied, her gaze sweeping across the room.

"Of course, right this way," the clerk said, leading her toward a display of chic leather handbags in various colors. "This is our latest collection. If you’re looking for something classic, I recommend this black one with gold accents. For something more playful, we have these pastel shades."

Delphinia nodded, her fingers brushing over the soft leather of a cream-colored bag. She was inspecting the stitching when a voice, sharp and familiar, cut through the air.

"Oh, isn’t it Delphinia?"

Delphinia froze for a moment, her grip tightening on the bag. She turned to face the voice, her face calm even as irritation bubbled beneath the surface. Standing a few feet away were Adalaine and Kai. Adalaine, dressed in a figure-hugging red dress, clung to Kai’s arm like a lifeline, her perfectly painted lips curved into a mocking smile. Kai stood beside her, his face set in a grimace that suggested he’d rather be anywhere else. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

"Well, this is unexpected," Delphinia said, her tone as neutral as possible. She glanced at Adalaine’s hand clutching Kai’s arm and thought, What an unfortunate pair.

Adalaine’s mocking smile deepened as her eyes scanned Delphinia from head to toe, her gaze lingering just a second too long on Delphinia’s simple yet elegant attire. "Well, well," Adalaine drawled, her voice dripping with feigned sweetness. "I didn’t expect to see you in a place like this. Did you lose your way? These stores can be a bit... overwhelming if you’re not used to them." She let out a soft laugh, her hand giving Kai’s arm a possessive squeeze.

Kai shifted uncomfortably, glancing away as if wanting no part in the exchange.

"Overwhelming?" she echoed. "Not at all. I’ve always enjoyed a good shopping trip. Though I suppose it can be a challenge for some to navigate quality and taste." The words came out calm, but the hidden sting was crystal clear.

Adalaine’s eyes narrowed slightly, though she quickly recovered, her mocking tone unrelenting. "Well, it’s nice to see you trying, Delphinia," she answered. "Everyone deserves a little aspiration, after all."

Her laugh was sharp and grating as she inched closer to Kai, her fingers lightly brushing his arm. "Isn’t it funny, Kai? Running into your ex-wife here of all places," she said, her voice dripping with fake cheerfulness.

Kai scowled, his jaw tightening. "Not funny at all. Seeing her makes me sick," he muttered, his tone laced with disdain.

Delphinia’s eye twitched, and she clenched her teeth to keep from snapping back immediately. Inside, she was screaming, Sick? You think you’re sick seeing me? I’m the one who needs to disinfect my eyes after seeing you two!

"How weird," Delphinia finally said, her lips curving into a sly smile. "I feel the opposite. I’m actually happy to see you both. The more time passes, the more you look... well, let’s just say, interesting. Truly a match made in hell—one piece of trash and another who loves picking up trash. Congrats on your engagement. I hope it falls apart sooner rather than later."

Kai took a step forward, his face darkening with anger, but Adalaine grabbed his arm, holding him back. "Now, now, Kai," she said sweetly, though her eyes glinted with malice. "Let’s not stoop to her level. Delphinia is nothing now. Just a sad woman who wasn’t even wanted by her own family. Poor thing must be losing her mind."

Delphinia raised an eyebrow, her smile widening as she suppressed a laugh. If only you knew, she thought. I left Harrington on my own terms, and I’m part of the Walton family now.

"Sad, you say?" Delphinia replied, her tone light and amused. "You’re right about one thing, Adalaine. It is sad... Sad that you have no clue how much of a joke you are."

Adalaine’s cheeks flushed, but she quickly masked it with another mocking smile. "Well," she said, ignoring Delphinia’s jab, "Kai and I will be getting married soon. I’d like to personally invite you to our wedding. It’ll be at the Palace Hotel, next month, on the 28th."

Kai turned to Adalaine, his brows furrowing. "Why are you inviting her?" he asked, clearly annoyed.

Adalaine smirked, leaning closer to him. "Because she’s your ex-wife, darling. She needs to witness our happiness. Don’t you think so?"

Kai glanced back at Delphinia, his expression sour, but said nothing.

Delphinia tilted her head, pretending to consider the invitation. "How thoughtful of you to invite me," she said finally. "I’ll be sure to check my calendar. Wouldn’t want to miss such a... memorable event."

Her words dripped with sarcasm, but Adalaine seemed too smug to notice. She simply smiled and looped her arm tighter around Kai’s. "Wonderful. I’ll be expecting you then."

Adalaine and Kai getting married at t the Palace Hotel? They really think they can flaunt their so-called happiness in front of me?

In her mind, she couldn’t help but scoff. If they want a show, I’ll give them one. But on my terms, not theirs.
