Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 113: Commitments
The warmth of the living room felt like a soft embrace as Delphinia settled into the plush sofa. Ashton had just bounded upstairs to his room, his laughter echoing faintly as his door clicked shut.
Evander walked in from the dining area, carrying two glasses of wine. He handed one to Delphinia before sitting beside her.
"Long day," he said, leaning back and loosening the top button of his shirt.
Delphinia took a small sip from her glass, letting the wine warm her from the inside. She sighed and glanced at him. "It got... interesting," she admitted, her lips curving into a faint, almost ironic smile.
Evander raised a brow, curiosity flickering in his eyes. "Oh? Do tell."
She leaned back into the cushions, tucking her feet beneath her. "I ran into Kai and Adalaine today."
Evander’s relaxed posture stiffened slightly, and his eyes narrowed. "What happened?"
Delphinia chuckled softly, swirling the wine in her glass. "Nothing I couldn’t handle," she assured him. "But let me start from the beginning." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
She recounted the entire encounter. "Adalaine, as expected, was her usual obnoxious self," she said, rolling her eyes. "She insisted I come to their wedding because she wanted to show me what a ’real’ wedding reception looks like. Can you believe that?"
Evander’s jaw tightened, and he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "She said that to you? Bold, isn’t she? Especially after everything they’ve done."
Delphinia shrugged, her expression calm but her eyes glinting with resolve. "It’s Adalaine. Petty insults are her specialty. But I didn’t let her get under my skin. I just smiled and said I’d come."
Evander tilted his head, studying her carefully. "You actually want to go to their wedding?"
She took another sip of wine, the glass glinting in the warm light of the room. "Not really. But if I do go, it’ll be on my terms. I won’t let them think they can push me around."
Evander leaned back again, crossing his arms over his chest. A small smirk played on his lips, though his tone was serious. "If they ever try to mess with you again, they won’t get away with it. I’ll make sure of that."
Delphinia reached over, placing a hand on his arm. "I appreciate that," she said softly. "But I can handle them. They’re just... loud and irritating, like flies buzzing around. Nothing more."
He studied her for a moment, his expression softening. "You handled them well today," he said, a note of admiration in his voice. "I’m impressed you didn’t let them provoke you."
She smiled, her cheeks warming at his praise. "It wasn’t easy," she admitted with a light laugh. "But I wasn’t about to give them the satisfaction of seeing me upset."
Evander leaned closer, his eyes locking onto hers with a tenderness that made her heart skip a beat. "You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for," he murmured, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. "And that deserves a reward."
Before she could respond, he closed the distance between them, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips. It was soft and sweet, a gesture that carried unspoken gratitude and affection.
Delphinia felt a blush rise to her cheeks, her hand lightly resting on his chest. But before she could fully savor the moment, a small movement caught her eye.
"Ashton’s here," she whispered urgently, gently pushing Evander back with a soft laugh.
Evander followed her gaze, spotting Ashton standing at the edge of the living room, clutching a piece of paper. The little boy tilted his head curiously, his expression innocent but clearly confused.
Delphinia quickly sat up straighter, smoothing her hair as if nothing had happened. Evander chuckled under his breath, shaking his head slightly as he straightened as well.
"Sorry to interrupt," Ashton said, walking over to them. His small feet padded against the floor, and he held out the paper. "This came from school today."
Evander took the paper, unfolding it with one hand while holding his wine glass in the other. His eyes scanned the words briefly before he let out a low chuckle.
"Oh," he said, holding the paper up for Delphinia to see. "Parent-teacher meeting. Looks like it’s next week."
Delphinia’s eyes flicked to the letter, and without much thought, she raised her hand slightly. "Can I go?" she asked, her voice filled with quiet determination.
Both Evander and Ashton turned to look at her, surprise flashing across their faces. Their gazes shifted to each other briefly before returning to her.
Delphinia felt a small pang of nervousness under their scrutiny. She cleared her throat, lowering her hand slightly. "I just thought... maybe I could help. I know you’re probably busy, Evander, and—" She hesitated, glancing at Ashton. "I’d like to strengthen my role as Ashton’s mother. It would be nice to hear how he’s doing at school from his teachers."
Evander’s expression softened, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
Evander chuckled, folding the letter and setting it aside. "Of course you can go," he said, his voice warm. "Right, Ashton?"
He glanced at Ashton, raising an eyebrow as if seeking his input. Ashton nodded enthusiastically, his grip on Delphinia tightening briefly before he let go.
Ashton beamed, his small face lighting up with excitement. "I’d be happy if you came," he said, walking over to Delphinia. He hugged her around the waist, looking up at her with bright eyes.
Delphinia felt a warmth spread through her chest, her lips curving into a genuine smile as she rested a hand on Ashton’s shoulder.
"Thank you," Delphinia said softly, her voice almost trembling with emotion. She looked between the two of them, her heart swelling with a newfound sense of belonging.
Evander reached out, resting a hand on her knee. "You’re doing great," he said, his voice low but sincere.
She smiled, a faint blush dusting her cheeks as she nodded. "I’ll do my best," she said, her voice steady despite the fluttering in her chest.
Ashton grinned before turning toward the stairs. "I’ll tell my friends and my teacher you’re coming!"
