Chapter 36: Moved in with him

Lara leaned away from Curtis, and her mouth dropped open with shock.

What the hell just happened?

Did Curtis, arrogant, drunk with power, rude and powerful Curtis just kiss her?

Lara was unable to believe what just happened, and she just stared at him like he was a ghost. Curtis, who suddenly realised what he just did, cleared his throat and looked away.

His expression was cold and neutral, and he acted as if he didn’t just act on impulse and kissed her.

Lara cleared her throat, wanting to see his eyes to know what he might be feeling. And to her utmost surprise, Curtis refused to look at her.

He turned around and started to walk away.

"Get some rest, Lara. You need it, for the sake of the babies," he said coolly, and his tone made Lara narrow her eyes at his retreating figure.

"Oh no. You won’t be walking out on me. Look at me, Curtis Rodney," she snapped, her voice laced with an edge.

Curtis sighed inwardly and turned to face her. "Don’t snap at me," he retorted sharply. Lara rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her chest.

"I want an explanation," she stated.

"An explanation about what?" he asked in return. Lara’s eyes narrowed further.

"Don’t act as if you don’t know what I am talking about. You kissed me. Just now. Without any reason or whatever. I need you to tell me why you did that," she insisted.

Curtis, who didn’t want her to know that he had no reason for kissing her, kept his expression neutral.

He raised an eyebrow and stared at her coolly.

"Believe me, I did not do that because I wanted to. I just...you were in pain and I just wanted to comfort you. I mean, if you’re uncomfortable, then surely the babies will be too, right? I did it for them, not for you."

His words were delivered so curtly and with the right amount of sincerity that Lara was slightly taken aback.

His explanation made sense, of course. He had kissed her because of the children, and not because he actually wanted to. Which was totally fine.

It wasn’t as though she wanted him to kiss her just for kissing sake, right?

Unable to come up with a response to his words, she nodded and looked away.

When he walked out, leaving her alone, Lara was finally alone with her thoughts. And her mind automatically wandered back to what happened earlier.

She knew Curtis had promised her that his mother would not harass her anymore, but she knew he would not be able to protect her all the time.

And no matter what he did, his family members would not accept her. Never. The realisation made her sad, and she wished she could tell them the truth.

She wished she could tell them that she wanted nothing with their precious son, that she was with him against her will.

Lara wanted nothing more than to let them know that all she wanted was to have a baby, and now she was stuck in Curtis’s life, going through one drama after another.

She wished she could let them know, but she could not. She had signed a contract with Curtis and until the babies were born, she wasn’t allowed to tell anyone about their arrangement.

Which meant that she had no choice than to go through, and accept, whatever happened to her.

Resigned and helpless, Lara drifted off to sleep, hoping that Curtis would speak to his mother and make her back off from humiliating her.

Lara spent a week in the hospital. She wanted to go home without having to stay there that long, but her husband insisted on it.

Curtis wanted her to rest as much as she could, and it rankled Lara at how annoying he was.

But she stayed. She grumbled, picked petty fights with him and lashed out with her anger. But he insisted, and she eventually gave in.

When she got home, Curtis helped her out of the car. She gave him a small thanks and allowed him to walk her to the small villa where Benny was waiting for her.

The old nanny smiled at the sight of her boss’s wife, and Lara smiled back.

The nanny was a welcome sight, and Lara gently extricated her arm from Curtis’s grip and held on to Benny instead.

"Welcome home, ma’am. I hope you’re feeling better?" Benny asked. Lara sighed before responding.

"I am, thank you. But you see, I would have been home earlier if it wasn’t for one annoying, over protective man that made me stay at the hospital for days," she rolled her eyes as she spoke, and Benny smiled at the not so subtle jab at Curtis.

Curtis snapped back. "I’m sorry for being concerned about my babies. If you like to endanger yourself, that’s fine by me. But as long as you are pregnant with my children, you will do whatever I ask you to do," he ordered.

Lara rolled her eyes at him again, and was about to step past the door and go inside when a wave of dizziness slammed into her.

Bile crawled up her throat, and without stopping to think, she turned away from the door and ran a few feet towards the floor.

Then she vomited all over.

Curtis automatically averted his eyes away from the ugly sight, but Benny immediately ran over to her in concern.

"Are you okay, ma’am?" the nanny asked. Lara nodded, unable to speak. The sudden attack of nausea was a surprise to her too, and she didn’t know what to think of it.

"Come on, let’s get you inside and clean you up," Benny said gently and was about to lead Lara away when Curtis stepped forward.

"No. Leave her to me. I need to take her back to the hospital," he stated.

Lara glared at him.

"I do not want to go back to that hospital. I am perfectly fine!" she snapped at him.

"No, you’re not. You just threw up all over my house. You need to go back there," he insisted.

Before Lara could come up with an appropriate response however, Benny stepped up.

"Forgive me, Mr. Curtis. But there is something you need to know. Your wife does not need to go back to the hospital. What she is experiencing right now is called the morning sickness, and it is very common for all pregnant women to go through this stage," the old woman calmly explained.

Her explanation made sense to Lara, but it was a new thing to Curtis. His brows furrowed into a frown.

"This morning sickness you talk about, will it always be like this? With her throwing up all the time?" he asked the nanny.

The old woman smiled slightly.

"No, sir. It is going to get worse. She will experience a lot of uncomfortable feelings, and she will need all the comfort she can get right now."

Curtis immediately started to think. Anything that would cause displeasure or pain to the the woman carrying his babies needed to be gotten rid of.

He needed her to be in prime position and to keep his babies healthy.

"Take her into the main villa. She will be staying with me from this moment onwards," he ordered.

Lara’s eyebrows shot upwards. She rose to face him, indignant and enraged.

"I will not be doing such a thing!" she yelled at his face.

He stared her down.

"Yes, you will. Because I will be looking after you personally," he announced.
