Chapter 114: Approaching Final Exams

"I have my own methods, just focus on your studies. If the college entrance exam is reinstated, you should take it too," Xu Mumu said casually, glancing at Xu Minghui. She couldn’t understand the struggles of a poor student.

In the evening, the whole Xu Family gathered around Xu Minghui. Li Caixia was even more dramatic, almost wanting to hug Xu Minghui and cry, lamenting about how thin her son had gotten.

Xu Mumu went to the kitchen to check. There were still dozens of pounds of wild boar meat that Madam Chen had saved, along with two front hooves. She didn’t know to whom the hind leg had been sold.

Xu Minghui knew that his sister had done something big again. He heard people in the village talking about it when he returned. He was impressed by her strength, taking down a wild boar so easily.

The dishes for dinner were rich with meat, the first time the family had eaten so heartily.

"Minghui, eat more; you’ll need energy for work," said Madam Chen lovingly as she picked up pieces of meat for Xu Minghui.

After dinner, Xu Mumu gathered all her secret savings. Though it wasn’t a hundred yuan yet, it was a sizable amount. In those days, one hundred yuan had significant purchasing power. She had several ration tickets and some meat tickets that Li Caixia had just given her and Xu Minghui, worrying that their children wouldn’t eat well outside.

Xu Mumu carefully stored the money away. Once it increased a little more, she planned to open an account and deposit it.

Though Xu Minghui was reluctant, he still followed Xu Mumu for tutoring. Luckily, he wasn’t dim-witted. Xu Mumu felt that none of her siblings were too dull. Her expectations for Xu Minghui were modest: as long as he could pass the undergraduate line.

Time flew by, and the weather was getting hotter. There were only two weeks left before the final exams. During this period, Du Yu was under significant pressure. His progress in the mid-term was noticeable, so now his parents had raised their expectations for him.

Xu Mumu highlighted the key points for him and let him study independently. He had already learned the basics; what remained was up to his self-study and understanding.

Frankly, teaching Du Yu was easier than teaching her brother. Du Yu listened well and had a stronger foundation than Xu Minghui. With pressure from his parents, Du Yu was more attentive to his studies.

"Mumu, what should I do? I feel like I’ve forgotten almost everything I’ve memorized. What should I do?" Du Yu was desperate, hoping Xu Mumu could offer a good memory technique.

"If you can’t focus, don’t just read. Do it," Xu Mumu took out a test paper from her drawer and handed it to him. This was one Yin Yang had found for her. The questions on it were quite typical, perfect for Du Yu to work on.

"How come you have so many test papers?" Du Yu twitched at the corner of his mouth. Xu Mumu seemed to have an endless supply. Whenever she had free time, she was always working on these papers.

"I’ve got a whole drawer full at home, so you can work on them without worry," Xu Mumu said calmly, not knowing where Yin Yang managed to get these papers from. They were really useful to her.

"Alright, I’ll work on it," Du Yu said speechlessly. He had never seen such papers before; the ones from school were much easier.

"Remember to come back and check the answers after you’re done," Xu Mumu nodded. She had the answers too.

"Okay." Du Yu took the paper and started working slowly. The questions required careful thought to solve.

This semester, with Xu Mumu’s tutoring, he could clearly feel his significant progress. In the recent small tests, he ranked around the top ten in the class.

But now, as the exams approached, he grew more anxious, and his study efficiency greatly decreased.

Du Yu took the paper, calmed down, and started working on it. Finally, without the shadow of anxiety, Xu Mumu was at ease to focus on her study materials.

"Mumu, it’s just exams, there’s no need for this, right?" Xue Yan said, watching them study so intently. She felt awkward talking to Xu Mumu during this intense study time, worried about disturbing her.

"Of course there is. My goal is a scholarship," Xu Mumu said with a light smile. She heard the first-place scholarship was ten yuan. Over time, she had increased her savings to over a hundred yuan, though still some way from a wristwatch.

"It’s not like there’s a college entrance exam, studying so hard seems pointless," Xue Yan thought about studying seriously too, but whenever she opened her books, she realized she hadn’t been diligent enough before. Now, it seemed too late to catch up.

"It’s not impossible that it will be reinstated. Xue Yan, stop reading novels," Xu Mumu said flatly. She’d reminded her multiple times, but it was useless. She felt she’d done her utmost for Xue Yan.

"Forget it, let’s not talk about it. I’m probably not coming back next semester. My uncle found me a job selling tickets at a cinema in the county. Come visit during break, and I’ll treat you to a movie," Xue Yan brightened up quickly at the thought.

She was delighted with the job her uncle found. She’d be able to watch free movies every day.

"Sure," Xu Mumu smiled and nodded.

Just hoping Xue Yan wouldn’t regret it later on. By mid-next year, news of the college entrance exam reinstatement would come, and it would be too late to review then.

It was Friday when they got home, and Xu Mumu and Zhao Qing were walking towards the commune together.

As they were about to part, Zhao Qing called her.

"Mumu, I have something to say to you, you see," Zhao Qing said, looking down, his ears reddening.

"Let’s go over there," Xu Mumu suggested, feeling a headache coming on from Zhao Qing’s shy demeanor. She roughly guessed what he wanted to say.

It was better to clear things up early rather than leaving Zhao Qing hanging like her shameless mother did.

They went to the willow tree, where it was quieter and less crowded by the riverside.

"Mumu, in two weeks, I’ll be graduating," Zhao Qing said, pursing his lips. In the past few months, he noticed the significant change in Xu Mumu. The more he learned about her, the more he liked her.

"Yeah, I know," Xu Mumu nodded, waiting for Zhao Qing to continue.

"Mumu, I," Zhao Qing took a deep breath, summoned his courage, and looked at Xu Mumu, "I like you, and I want to be with you."
