10x Cashback: Your Wealth Is Mine-Chapter 69 The Apology
69 The Apology
My mind was still on Noah when I walked into the Pine Press lounge.
I was more interested in the fact that he was unable to find anything on me.
This had to be a mixture of my father and the system. Why else will information about me be so non-existent?
I had been a student and was in a few public records. I've spent most of my life in Crownsborough.
So, if he couldn't find out about me, there clearly was something extraordinary at play here.
I didn't know what to think of the background check. On one hand, I couldn't blame him and on the other, I had things to hide.
I guess it worked out pretty well.
My attention was pulled back to the present when one of my Pine Press acquaintances greeted me.
"Oh, hi." I greeted back. "I'm doing great. How are you?"
We exchanged pleasantries and I went on my way.
I looked up to the now familiar lounge. Club members occupied certain tables, discussing among themselves.
I cast my eyes around and found her waiting for me at a table in the corner. She looked… good.
Okay, I had been expecting a more disheveled appearance but that's on me for thinking the world revolved around me.
While she still looked good, I could see that she had been affected by the recent events.
Her gaze was distant as if she was looking at but not seeing what was in front of her while her finger swirled around, toying with the rim of her glass.
She looked… subdued.
Her father raising hell, her eldest brother sitting back to watch the chaos he had unleashed and Oliver trying to Cover all his bases.
Of course, the news hadn't affected Abstract Capital but it was looking like Abstract Capital will be all that he'll ever get from the family.
If he wanted more wealth, it was up to him to grow Abstract Capital into what he wants.
As for the heir of this branch of the Adam family, he was preparing for a divorce.
His wife, Margot, wasn't particularly poor but it was speculated that she'll gain nothing from the divorce proceedings.
Crownsborough law was very fair to those who possessed wealth during a divorce.
Due to the fact that they had no children, they would be splitting with only the assets in their names.
And she would receive no alimony. After all, she was an able bodied woman who could work for herself.
And Quinn would be there, watching as the family broke over the scandal.
I sighed and walked over. She glanced up and saw me as I approached the table, giving me a small, tentative smile.
"Nico." She greeted me, rising slightly from her seat.
"Quinn." I replied, giving her a nod as I took the seat across from her.
There was an awkward silence as we settled down. She glanced up at me before glancing down, probably deciding how to start. I decided to help her out.
"How have you been?" I asked her.
She looked up, startled, before pasting a pretty unconvincing smile on her face. "I've been doing good." She said.
"I see." I nodded encouragingly.
"Yeah." She nodded before the silence returned. She sighed before opening her mouth but before she could speak, the waiter appeared as if sent by the universe to stop this from happening.
I'd admit to glaring a bit at him which would probably be why he looked so eager to get our orders out of the way.
I ordered an espresso while Quinn waved off another drink, her half-full glass of what looked like Chardonnay still sitting untouched on the table.
Once the waiter left, I turned my attention fully to her.
"So." I said, leaning back in my chair. Let's go straight to the point. "Why did you want to see me?"
She hesitated, her eyes darting around as if to see if anyone was listening in before she sighed. "I wanted to apologize, Nico."
Exactly what I expected. I arched an eyebrow, letting her continue.
"I want to apologize for what happened at the Sunset Inn office. For how I caused a scene and jumped to conclusions about you." She said and I could practically hear the regret in her voice.
"I was wrong to blindly believe what Oliver said about you lying about him and trying to ruin his reputation in order to get him to invest in Sunset Inn. I should've verified things before doing anything. I'm sorry."
I studied her in silence. She looked down, not meeting my eyes.
But I could see that there was no trace of pretense in her tone or body language. She meant every word.
"I appreciate that." I said finally. "But I can't say I blame you. Oliver is your brother. Why would you trust me over him?"
She grimaced, her shoulders slumping slightly. "But I should have known better. I should've at least given you the benefit of the doubt."
"Trust is earned, Quinn." I said, keeping all traces of judgment out of my tone. I had no way to tell if her reaction had even been something the system had induced.
I almost cursed out loud then and there as I made the realization. If the system could affect people like this, can I really trust the people around me?
Who says Matt can't betray me if I get into a big enough debt? What if the system uses him to tear me down?
It was a scary thought but I forced it down to focus on Quinn. "I can't fault you for having doubts." I said. "Coupled with what Jenny had said about me, it wasn't hard for you to believe. And let's face it, Jenny wasn't entirely wrong about me."
Her head snapped up, her eyes narrowing slightly. "What do you mean?"

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table.
"I am ambitious. I'm making moves to claim what's mine and I won't deny that I've used my connections to further that goal." I said.
"But I've never lied to you, Quinn. Everything I've done with Sunset Inn has been transparent and above board."
Well, not entirely but she didn't need to know that.
She sighed, nodding slowly. "I know that now."
There was silence between us. Then I spoke.
"Sunset Inn has moved on and from what I heard, you still have your money. What do you plan to do now?"
She smiled at me. "I plan to build my own wings."
