The Villainess's Heartthrob Script: I Can Talk to Animals
Chapter 65: Renee Jennings, You’re Happy Eileen Is Dead, Aren’t You?
Late at night, Renee Jennings sat on her living room sofa, hugging her knees. She frowned, trying to recall the details of her earlier dream.
Although Eileen Coleman wasn’t mentioned much, she remembered Eileen laughing at her when Jaden Forrest was getting his revenge.
’How could she suddenly be dead?’
The sudden ring of her phone shattered her thoughts.
Renee saw it was a call from Henry Stark and had a vague premonition.
She answered the call and heard a man’s deep, serious voice. "Miss Jennings, are you free tomorrow? There’s a case on Wyan Road... someone fell from a building."
Renee’s guess was right.
It was Eileen Coleman’s case.
She said softly, "I’m free tomorrow, but are there any pets involved? If not, I might not be able to help."
"Yes." Henry’s voice softened slightly. "But it’s a turtle. Can you understand their language?"
"I can." As luck would have it, the reward Renee had recently obtained was a turtle-language dictionary.
"Good," Henry said gently. "We’ll pick you up from Blissborne Garden at nine tomorrow morning."
Renee had no objections. "See you tomorrow, then."
「The next day.」
Renee got into the police car and was driven to Wyan Road.
Eileen Coleman lived on the thirteenth floor, in apartment 1303.
Kyle Morgan reached out and rang the doorbell.
Eileen Coleman had a roommate who was working the night shift and hadn’t come home when the incident occurred yesterday.
The door opened from the inside. A woman with short hair saw Renee, and a look of surprise flashed in her eyes.
"What are you doing here?" she blurted out instinctively.
Before Renee could answer, Kyle Morgan asked with a surprised look on his face, "You two know each other?"
Daphne Dalton then realized that Renee had come with the police. Her eyes flickered, and she immediately cried out in astonishment, "Is Renee Jennings the murderer?"
Hearing this, Henry Stark’s sharp eyes narrowed slightly, carrying a hint of imperceptible scrutiny.
Renee was no stranger to Daphne Dalton.
After all, this was the person who had slandered her in the group chat just yesterday, claiming she had pushed Eileen Coleman off the balcony.
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Sawyer said, a little angry. "Renee is a special consultant for our police department."
"A consultant?" Daphne looked astonished. "A special consultant for the police? Her?"
Henry’s voice was icy. "Do you have a problem with that?"
Daphne didn’t dare refute the intimidating man, meekly replying, "No..."
She just never would have dreamed that Renee would be a special consultant for the police department.
’What kind of skills could she possibly have?’
’Other than being good at arguing, good at drinking, and being pretty, she’s nothing but flaws.’
The group walked into the apartment. Daphne stared at Renee and spoke again. "Renee, you must be happy that Eileen is dead, right?"
As soon as she said this, all eyes fell on Renee.
Daphne was a little nervous, but she forced herself to act calm and said, "After all, you hated Eileen so much."
"Who said I hated her?" Renee walked up to her, her beautiful eyes staring coldly at Daphne.
Meeting her gaze, Daphne felt an inexplicable chill and her voice trembled slightly. "I-Isn’t that true? Eileen was always going against you."
"You’re overthinking it," Renee said calmly. "I didn’t care about her at all."
She had indeed disliked Eileen Coleman before, but after her ’awakening,’ she hadn’t given the woman a second thought.
Renee asked coolly, "How long did you and Eileen Coleman live together?"
"What’s that got to do with you?" Daphne said sarcastically.
"Please cooperate with the police investigation," Kyle Morgan said in a loud voice.
Only then did Daphne reluctantly answer, "A little over half a year."
Renee scanned the entire apartment, her gaze finally landing on the turtle terrarium in the corner.
She crouched down and asked, "Who owns this slider?"
"It was Eileen Coleman’s." Hearing Renee ask such a strange question, Daphne thought, ’I knew it. She’s not a professional.’
’She probably just hooked up with some powerful man who gave her this bullshit consultant title so she can collect a paycheck for doing nothing.’
"Alright." Renee nodded and picked up the terrarium. "Let’s go."
"You’re leaving already?" Daphne looked at them in disbelief.
Watching Renee and the others leave, she became even more certain that Renee was just a freeloader with a fancy title, and a pang of jealousy grew in her heart.
Back in the car, Renee frowned and asked, "Can I see Daphne Dalton’s statement?"
"One second." Sawyer pulled it up and handed her his phone. "Here."
"Thanks." Renee took the phone and began to read it carefully. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
When Eileen Coleman fell, Daphne Dalton had just gotten off work and was on her way home, giving her a solid alibi.
She mentioned that Eileen had been in a bad mood lately, apparently because she owed a lot of money on her credit cards and couldn’t pay it back. She would often cry in her room and throw tantrums, smashing things.
’Smashing things?’
Renee recalled the two rooms she had just seen; they were both very tidy.
After a moment, Henry asked softly, "Did you find something?"
"Daphne said..." Renee shared her thoughts.
Henry raised a slight eyebrow, a faint smile playing on his thin lips. "Very observant."
He had noticed that detail yesterday as well.
Daphne Dalton might not be telling the truth, but she did have a solid alibi.
Yesterday, he had noticed the turtle in the apartment and was planning to suggest bringing Renee in during the meeting, but Quentin Lowell had given the order first.
They stopped at a red light. Kyle Morgan glanced at the rearview mirror and asked curiously, "Miss Jennings, do you know Eileen Coleman and Daphne Dalton?"
Renee handed the phone back to Sawyer and explained softly, "I guess you could say that. I used to run into Eileen Coleman and clash with her at bars a lot. Once I stopped going to those places, I never saw her again."
"Oh, I see." Sawyer nodded. He was actually a bit surprised; Renee didn’t seem like the type to frequent bars.
Back at the station, Kyle Morgan helped Renee carry the terrarium into the conference room, then took out a notebook and sat down.
"What is it?" Renee looked at him, confused.
Kyle Morgan explained with a goofy grin, "Director Lowell said the animal’s statement has to be recorded, too."
Renee raised an eyebrow, her gaze falling on the palm-sized slider in the terrarium.
It was lying on the pebbles, looking lethargic.
Just as Renee was about to speak to it, she suddenly heard a sigh.
"*Sigh*, life is tough, this turtle’s had enough—"
She sat down on a stool to be eye-level with the slider and said with a smile, "How is life so tough for you, little turtle?"
As if hearing her voice, the slider slowly turned its head to look at her, surprised. "Two-Legger? You can understand what this turtle is saying?"
Renee nodded. "I can, but you can’t call me a Two-Legger."
"Then what should this turtle call you?" the slider asked.
"My name is Renee Jennings. What’s your name?"
"This turtle has no name."
"Then I’ll just call you Turtle," Renee said after a moment’s thought. She then asked, "Do you know Eileen Coleman?"
"Who’s that?" The slider shook its head. "Don’t know. This turtle is about to die."
Renee frowned. "What’s wrong with you? Are you sick?"
The slider sighed again. "Life is tough, this turtle’s had enough, and this turtle is starving to death!"
