Reborn as a Tough Army Wife - Chapter 629 - 624: Before the Wedding
Luo Honglan felt that Luo Zhiming indeed needed some good training, so she decided to assign him to the job of hauling bricks.
Moreover, the best part about hauling bricks was that it wasn’t a job related to Chen Jie; it was a casual job they found, where payment was settled daily. The workers didn’t need to interact much with the boss; as long as you could do the work, you would get paid and leave.
Luo Honglan was very clear about this: if Luo Zhiming caused any trouble on the construction site, it couldn’t be blamed on anyone else. Considering the trouble Luo Zhiming had caused Luo Zhiyong before, she had learned her lesson. She couldn’t afford to create problems for Chen Jie or anyone else because of Luo Zhiming again.
When Luo Zhiming came looking for Luo Dashan again, he actually found their residence. It was noon at that time, and Luo Honglan happened to be at home cooking for Luo Dashan.
As the door opened and she saw Luo Zhiming, Luo Honglan didn’t say much. After letting him into the house, she told him, "I’ve found a job for you, brick hauling at a construction site. Will you do it?"
After entering the house, Luo Zhiming looked around the place and felt some envy, as well as regret.
What a great house—so spacious and bright, much better than a hostel, and it’s free.
If he hadn’t messed up before, Luo Dashan and Luo Honglan would surely let him live here as well. He wouldn’t have to pay for a hostel, and after staying there for two days, he was nearly unable to afford it. He thought about finding a job and moving to the place where the work was.
After entering the house, knowing that the job was about hauling bricks, he felt a bit reluctant. He had never really done heavy labor in his life, even back in the countryside, where at most he would just be a bit busier during the farming season. Heavy labor was usually taken care of by Luo Dashan alone.
Seeing Luo Zhiming still with the same demeanor as before, unable to bear any hardship once he heard about it, Luo Honglan grew impatient and plainly said, "Second Brother, if you’re willing to work, you start tomorrow. If not, then forget it, go back home and live your life however you like."
Just as Luo Zhiming was about to speak, Luo Dashan immediately urged him, "Zhiming, just do it. It’s true that hauling bricks is tough, but if you’re willing to put in the effort, you can earn quite a bit in a month. Some people earn three to four yuan a day. Didn’t you say you’re willing to do anything for money?"
Hearing that he could earn that much in a day, Luo Zhiming immediately agreed, "Okay, I’ll go."
With Luo Zhiming’s matter resolved, in a blink of an eye, it was the eighth day of the first lunar month.
Fang Xiu and Zhou Guangsheng returned from Zhou Guangsheng’s hometown. Fang Xiu felt that her in-laws at the Zhou Family’s side were agreeable, and after returning, the two discussed getting their marriage certificate.
Li Yuchun was superstitious and said that the ninth was an auspicious day, claiming that getting married on that day meant a couple would stay together forever. Thus, Fang Xiu and Zhou Guangsheng agreed.
So, that same night, Fang Xiu went to Fang Pingying’s house to discuss with her, "Big sis, we’re planning to get the marriage certificate tomorrow, what do you think?"
Knowing that the two of them had also been through a lot and were still together now, Fang Pingying naturally agreed and smiled, "Sure."
Hearing this, Fang Xiu hurriedly said with a smile, "Then you don’t need to cook at home, big sis. Guangsheng and I have discussed it; we won’t invite outsiders for the wedding. Just us family will go out for a meal to celebrate."
Fang Pingying nodded, "Okay, I’ll book the restaurant. After you finish with the paperwork tomorrow, you can go straight to the restaurant."
Just when everyone thought that Fang Xiu and Zhou Guangsheng would surely tie the knot this time, an unexpected, major incident occurred.
The event of obtaining a marriage certificate was indeed a big deal, and Fang Xiu didn’t sleep well the night before. Early the next day, she changed into a bright red outfit and went to Fang Pingying’s house.
The kids at home, Ruirui and Yaoyao, had heard from Fang Pingying about Fang Xiu, and seeing her dressed in bright red, Yaoyao started clapping her hands and shouting, "Auntie is a bride."
Ruirui, who had been staying at Fang Pingying’s house over the New Year holiday and refused to go back home, also joined in the chant upon hearing Yaoyao, "Mommy is a bride, hee hee."
Blushing from laughter, Fang Xiu playfully scolded each of the little rascals by scraping their noses, saying, "You little mischievous ones."
After helping the kids at Fang Pingying’s house get dressed and cleaned up, Fang Xiu waited a long time for Zhou Guangsheng but didn’t see him.
Fang Xiu started to feel anxious, as if unsettled, but Fang Pingying reassured her, saying that there was some distance to the troop unit and even cycling would take time. Moreover, going too early wouldn’t help, as the civil affairs office wouldn’t have staff yet. Zhou Guangsheng certainly knew this, which is why he was late.
However, by nine o’clock, after Fang Pingying’s family had breakfast and even Li Yuchun and family had arrived, there was still no sign of Zhou Guangsheng. Unable to sit still any longer, Fang Xiu said to Fang Pingying, "Sis, I’ll go check on their troop unit to see if something happened."
Fang Pingying also grew worried and quickly grabbed a coat to go inside, saying, "Okay, I’ll come with you. And I can book the restaurant while we’re out."
The two of them took the bus towards the troop unit, but halfway there, they encountered a traffic jam. The cars came and went slowly, and when someone asked the driver what was happening, the driver mentioned there had been an incident involving a horse-drawn carriage, apparently a big accident, causing traffic all morning.
Upon hearing this, Fang Xiu quickly said, "Big sis, do you think it’s the accident that’s making Guangsheng late?"
For some reason, Fang Pingying felt a sudden unease when she heard the word "accident."
Logically, if Zhou Guangsheng was cycling, even a car accident shouldn’t delay him, unless at this moment, his sense of military duty kicked in, causing him to stop and help.
However, seeing Fang Xiu so anxious, she didn’t voice her own concerns and simply said, "It ought to be because of the accident. Didn’t the driver just say it’s been jammed up for quite a while?"
After spending about half an hour on the bus, and with it barely moving ten meters, Fang Pingying couldn’t help but worry and called out to the driver, "Driver, we’re in a hurry. Can you let us off here?"
The driver was kind and turned off the engine, opened the door, and told the passengers, "Go ahead, all those in a hurry can get off here. I reckon it’s going to be at least a couple of hours before this gets sorted out."
After getting off the bus, Fang Pingying and Fang Xiu walked straight in the direction of the troop unit.
About 500 meters from the unit, Fang Pingying saw a crowd not far ahead, surrounded by police and military personnel in uniform, blocking the entire road. Both public security and military personnel were maintaining order, letting the vehicles pass one by one.
They couldn’t see clearly what was going on within the crowd, but nearby, they could see a bicycle lying on the roadside, with what seemed like traces of blood on its head.
