Planet Vs Aliens: Space User Saves the World
Chapter 35: Creating Pariahs (Part 1)
The age of the internet made things easy for Luke. He only had to contact the reporters, and they could already tell it was a big scoop.
Further, someone had spread the video of what happened at the party to their friends. Slowly but surely, the videos and links were already quietly spreading in the background at the same time.
But even before those went viral, the media ate up the news. Reporters’ nose was very sharp, and they arrived even before the lawyer did.
It also helped that Detective Luke may or may not have leaked this news to them.
Luke watched the reporters make notes and calls, speaking as if they were rapping. He could already tell that Houser and his family would soon see a lot of reporters hounding them. Rightfully so.
This was really sensational news. Rather than because it was murder, the news got traction because of who was being accused. Many people despised the rich, and they would jump at any chance to expose their real colors.
The very next day, various articles—in conjunction with the videos—had already gone viral. Interestingly, the police’s workload got reduced a lot because some of the investigations were already done by others.
The reporters dug up everything they could, and there were plenty of nosy people who also dug around, just because.
Soon, various witness accounts showing the family’s true characters were added into online circulation. There were plenty of storytelling content creators who took in the family’s story as their topic of the week.
One of the main points of discussion was the horrid and pitiful life of Nadia, Houser’s eldest daughter. Luke and the other officers especially felt bad for the girl he had never met, especially since they had seen her last few minutes of living.
Even the life story of Houser and his first wife, the mistress scandal, and how the girl was treated as a servant, were spread out.
This was no secret, and the siblings often bragged about it. But who wanted trouble for themselves?
This was something for the next day.
At this time, it was still the evening of the arrest. Houser was still in the station, about to head out, looking smug.
The lawyer was ready and had brought in guards to protect his client, and the entourage made Houser think he really would be okay.
After all, many, many people had done much worse things than he did, but those people were still smiling on TV, admired by millions.
There were those who had even been videotaped, with witnesses stepping forward, but even now, those evil men were still frolicking outside as if they had never been affected by the allegations.
On the contrary, many witnesses disappeared, and the victims themselves had been ostracized. Such was the way of the world, and only the idiots fight against it!
Houser didn’t think he was any different from the others in power! As long as one had money, the situation could turn around!
Anyway, he and the lawyer were in such a rush that they forgot two people there: The wife and the children, who were not taken in as suspects but for interviews.
Houser was too preoccupied with his own issue while the lawyer was only informed about Houser himself. Who would bother with the witnesses? Even if they did remember them, they were grown women who should be able to handle themselves.
As for the youngest lad, he kept wanting to fight the police, offended by the ’humiliation’. He kept causing trouble, so his detention was extended to three days. He would then be asked to write a letter of apology. He’d be released on his own (if he behaved), so no one cared about him.
Meanwhile, Ginna and Carina were calling for Houser while he was taken out of the interrogation room. However, the reporters camping around the station were quick and noisy, the sheer number easily blocking people’s view. Houser didn’t even see them there at all.
"Dad! Dad!" Carina called, but the priority was to get Houser out of there, so even the security the lawyer hired did not even turn their heads.
Ginna cursed while Carina looked pitiful, like they were victims, but the policemen knew they were not good things and ignored them.
Carina pouted. Outwardly, she just looked like a pitiful heroine trying to hold back her tears. It was like they couldn’t even call a cab or something.
Unexpectedly, she saw the handsome detective staring at them. Carina’s heart skipped a beat. Looking at the man’s sharp features and perfectly toned body, she felt her body heat up, and her throat dry up.
Luke’s eyes twitched. He had been staring at them in disgust, but in Carina’s eyes, it was ’interest’.
The young girl walked over with pink cheeks and watery eyes. "Detective..." she said, voice soft like a feather. "We...we were left behind. Can you send us home, please? We will be very thankful..."
Ginna saw her daughter approach the police captain, and her eyes brightened. She immediately went to support.
Now, not only the young girl, but even her mother looked at Luke as if he were a piece of meat. Their eyes that had been filled with annoyance and resentment changed to expressions filled with softness and coquetishness in the blink of an eye. The face-changing was really skillful.
And it made Luke frown, feeling the bubbling of disgust in his stomach. This was why he disliked most women.
"You have your phones. Call a cab."
Carina saw him step back, about to leave. She knew that if they parted ways now, it would be difficult to reconnect with him.
"Detective...please give father the benefit of the doubt, okay? He has many enemies, and he could’ve easily been framed," she said, blinking her eyes at him, acting like a pitiful doe.
Instead of thinking of ways to fix things properly, their default was to depend on men.
"The evidence for the murder is under investigation, and the investigation will be fair," he said, baritone voice dismissive. He then stared at Carina and then at her mother.
"I recommend that you prepare for the worst while you still can."
Because he’d make sure it’d happen.
