Chapter 150: 025: The road is long, let’s travel together
It was night, in the Shadow Land, along a verdant path.
Walking on the narrow path back home, Lynch reminisced about what Lanice had said to him earlier in the tavern.
"It’s Tavendish."
"The Tavendish family took the initiative to propose to the Magic Potion Manor that I be transferred over."
At this point in the conversation.
Even if Lynch were slower, it would be impossible for him not to understand.
This really is... how to put it...
Really quite unexpected!
The gap between the two sides was simply too vast; he was just an ordinary apprentice with no background or status, while she was the young lady of a top-tier Wizard family.
It wasn’t about insecurity or self-deprecation, just a simple pragmatism and a dislike for unnecessary trouble.
Lynch had always been pragmatic—back in elementary school, while everyone else was dreaming about attending Tsinghua or Peking University, he had already set his sights on a 211 university in his province. After graduating, most of his classmates were unwilling to accept an ordinary life and decided to venture forth, while he considered his circumstances and opted to return to his hometown to take a government position.
Throughout elementary, middle, and high school, the girls crowned "class beauties" or "school queens" were the dream goddesses of many boys, yet Lynch had never been troubled by such thoughts.
To like? Of course, he liked them.
But he was keenly aware of the difference between reality and dreams: you eat the portions you’re capable of affording; he only did what was within his abilities and never yearned for the unattainable, especially when it came to matters of romance. He wouldn’t even entertain such thoughts.
This pragmatic mindset made him instinctively exclude people and things that he had no intention of considering.
As a result, even though his perception was quite sharp, he had never noticed anything odd about others’ behavior before. He merely chalked up all the unusual actions to "eccentricities of a wealthy family."
But now, after speaking with Lanice and processing her assumptions, Lynch suddenly realized that many previous abnormalities seemed to make sense.
Why would they specifically seek him out for a simple bloodline fusion modification on a baby bear?
Appearing inexplicably in the forest and randomly throwing a tantrum.
Even earlier, throughout their previous journey...
Alright then,
Perhaps what Lanice said was indeed true, and things seemed to be heading in an unexpected direction.
"Clack!" A soft sound echoed.
At that moment, Lynch suddenly stopped in his tracks.
He looked ahead.
He was almost at his doorstep, yet there in front of his courtyard stood a figure.
Her dark hair swayed in the night breeze as the faint glow from the streetlamp flowers illuminated her angelic face.
Avery approached, her tone playful, like banter at the end of a late-night show: "Oh wow, you actually remembered to come back?"
But Lynch didn’t respond as he usually would with a witty retort; instead, he just looked at her, seeming a little uneasy.
He nodded: "Yeah."
Avery blinked in surprise.
She stared at Lynch for a moment until his evasive glance seemed to tell her all she needed to know.
She didn’t say a word.
And yet, it felt like she’d said everything.
A flush of crimson quickly climbed up her pale neck, her cheeks burning as though ignited—shy yet joyous, her gaze arduously darting away.
A silent pause lingered.
She looked toward the quiet grove ahead and said, "Shall we take a walk?"
Lynch thought for a second and nodded, "Alright."
The two of them walked shoulder to shoulder toward the forest.
It wasn’t the first time they had journeyed side by side, but on past travels, there had always been endless topics to discuss—from Magic Potions to alchemy, from legends to gossip. The conversation never stopped.
Yet tonight, it was like their tongues had faltered; neither uttered a word.
Silently, they stepped into the forest.
This was a landscaped woodland in Lynch’s neighborhood: a place filled with Spark Trees, Aurora Flowers, and Starry Sky Grass—decorative Magic Plants with an elegant appearance. By day, weary apprentices often rested here, but now, deep in the night, only a few owls hooted from their perches.
Various Magic Plants emitted colorful glows, drawing vibrantly patterned insects to flutter nearby.
"Clatter!"
The crisp sound of flowing water echoed as a winding creek meandered through the forest. fгeewebnovёl.com
The night breeze was calm and steady.
After a prolonged silence, it was finally Avery who broke the ice: "We may have to part ways for a while."
Lynch replied, "Oh."
After a moment of reflection, realizing his response fell short, he added: "Where are you going?"
Avery nodded, then explained patiently: "Yes, the family wants to send me into the Magic Mirror for special training. It’s one of our family’s resource sites, with elevated elemental concentrations that greatly aid cultivation."
"But opening the Magic Mirror is extremely difficult; I’ll have to stay inside for at least ten years."
Lynch was taken aback: "That long?"
Avery sighed softly with a trace of helplessness: "Indeed, but there’s no choice. After all, there’s a... well, something crucial a thousand years in the making. Simply put, in ten years, we’ll need to handle an extremely critical matter, so I must take this time to strengthen myself."
Lynch asked curiously, "What’s it about?"
Avery shook her head: "Sorry, I’m not allowed to reveal that due to regulations."
Lynch didn’t push further: "Okay."
Avery gazed at the creek ahead where a few curved Lantern Flowers leaned over the water, their luminous insides casting glimmers across the shimmering waves.
She chuckled: "Look at this creek—doesn’t it remind you of the one we saw back in Moonlight Forest?"
Lynch nodded: "A little."
Avery said wistfully, "Sometimes, when I think back, those days seemed pretty good—no burdens, no pressure, no worries."
Turning her gaze to Lynch, she said: "If we had stayed in that cave forever..."
After a slight pause, she drew a deep breath, as if gathering courage, and said softly: "I wouldn’t have minded it, you know."
Her eyes locked intently onto Lynch.
Seconds ticked by, stretching into minutes as Avery’s gaze lingered on him.
Lynch hesitated slightly.
He genuinely didn’t know what to say, but it didn’t seem right to say nothing either.
So after a moment’s thought, he replied: "It was nice..."
As if a switch had been flipped, Avery’s mood instantly shifted—gone was the hesitance and shyness, replaced by confidence, vitality, and cheer.
"Ha-ha!"
She burst into laughter, then ran ahead toward the creek, rolling up her pant leg before stepping one foot into the water.
In an instant, a Hexagram Magic Array lit up beneath her foot, its white markings rapidly extending outward and spreading across the area. As the lines passed, the surrounding woodland was bathed in radiant light.
Under this glow, every tree, flower, and plant seemed to awaken as though placed under a filter of vibrant saturation, rendering the forest dreamlike and ethereal.
Avery grabbed both edges of her cloak, spinning in place—her cloak transformed into a glowing gown, shifting seamlessly into a formal dress.
She stepped into the creek, dancing gracefully as the water splashes turned into tiny figures that joined hands and circled her like backup dancers, while the dazzling flower beds cast a spotlight onto her stage.
She sang softly as she danced, weaving an ancient rhyme:
"Long ago, in a forest ancient, lies treasure profound—the eternal time and truths that explain all."
"We climb across rugged hills, through brambles thick and wet marsh lands."
"The thorns will pierce us skin-deep, the mire will pull us down—a mere fragment of trials bound by a lengthy journey."
"The road stretches far; no one travels easily through."
"Together we conquer the bramble patches, together friends save us from drowning swamps."
"Together cherished companions tread onward side by side."
"Through long years united, you with me—mountains, rivers, oceans, time passing by, forever past and present, until the forest’s last horizon."
As her performance reached its finale...
Avery emerged like a lively forest fawn, bouncing toward Lynch.
"Ahem!"
Clearing her throat lightly, she then spoke boldly and confidently to Lynch: "So then, Apprentice Lynch, the road is long—let’s be companions on this journey."
"Let’s tread together through this Wizard’s Road to find the ultimate treasure at the end."
"Truth and Eternity."
With those words, she took a step forward, stood slightly on tiptoe, and wrapped her arms around Lynch’s neck before leaning in to kiss him.
