Chapter 71 -69 Don’t Even Think About My Money (Part 1)

As April began, the weather warmed up, and the earth became tinged with green.

Shen Yunfang’s family, in the west room with the kang bed, welcomed the breeding spring for their earthworms.

After a month of breeding, the original three wooden boxes had turned into four, and the box that initially contained the larger earthworms was now teeming with tens of thousands of them.

There were plenty to look at, but to feed a flock of chickens, it still wasn’t enough; however, it was sufficient to feed the four big chickens first.

Using earthworms as chicken feed wasn’t something to be done carelessly, as earthworms themselves can carry parasites, and if not handled properly, they could make the chickens sick. Therefore, feeding chickens with earthworms required thoroughly cleaning them and sterilizing at high temperatures.

It sounded rather sophisticated, but in practice, it was quite simple.

Shen Yunfang soaked the earthworms in a basin, and within half an hour, all the dirt inside their stomachs had been expelled. Then she would cook them, chop them up, and mix them into the chicken feed.

However, before doing this, she first found a spot in the backyard, mixed some mud, and built a rudimentary stove. She didn’t buy an industrial iron pot, so she made do with a large aluminum basin instead. After all, this stove was only for boiling earthworms and cooking pig food, so this makeshift setup was workable.

As for why she kept it separate from the pot used for cooking their meals, there was no need to explain.

While she was busy with her work, Li Hongjun’s remittance slip finally arrived, and the piece of paper caused quite a stir within the Shen family.

Shen Yunfang didn’t know about it yet. She was surprised to hear that Great-Uncle Shen had invited her for a meal again, but she was planning to go to the county in the next few days and needed to ask for leave from Great-Uncle Shen in advance, so she happily went over.

But as soon as she entered the room, seeing the people sitting in rows on the kang bed, she raised an eyebrow in curiosity. She quickly tried to recall if there was any significant celebration that day, wondering why the Shen family was so thoroughly gathered.

Great-Uncle Shen’s kang was occupied by Second Great-Uncle, his wife, and Second Aunt with her husband.

“Great-Uncle, Second Great-Uncle, Second Great-Aunt, and Uncle, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen you all.”

As the younger one, Shen Yunfang had to greet each of these relatives, except for Second Aunt.

She had no regard for Shen Fuzhen anymore; now that their faces had been torn, there was no need to humble herself any longer.

“Hmph, less preaching,” muttered Shen Fuzhen under her breath.

Shen Yunfang didn’t even grant her a glance. With such a person, the more you engaged with her, the more she would prance about—simply treat the nasty things she said as if they were a fart and move on.

To prevent the aunt and niece from coming to blows, Great-Uncle Shen hurriedly found a topic and started chatting with Shen Yunfang.

“Yunfang, come over and take a look. We received a remittance slip for you today. I believe the address suggests it was sent by Li Hongjun—do you know about this?”

Uncle Shen handed over a piece of paper from the kang table.

Shen Yunfang calmly took it and glanced at the numbers, which indeed totaled thirty-seven yuan, “I know, Li Hongjun mentioned it in his last letter.”

“Yunfang, why did Li Hongjun send you so much money? You aren’t even married yet. If others find out, it won’t look good,” Second Aunt said in a tone that was both sarcastic and strange.

“What’s wrong with that? They are already engaged, it’s hardly any different from being married.” As Wang Li happened to carry dishes into the house, she overheard the comment and couldn’t help but speak with envy, “Yunfang, your fiancé is really quite something, sending you money before even getting married. After the wedding, you’ll surely be the one in charge in the household.”

Of course she was envious; others said she had married into a good family, with a husband who was a capable production team leader and a house that was never short of food and drink, but now, after so many years of marriage and three children later, it was still her mother-in-law who ruled the house. And it looked like this would continue for the next two or three decades, during which she wouldn’t see a penny. Her husband was as good as dead when it came to these matters, never having thought that his wife might need money too. If he got his hands on a bit of money, he handed it right over to his mother. It was only after they had a son that she persuaded him several times under the covers before this blockhead agreed to secretly save a little, to spare her the humiliation of asking her mother-in-law for money every time she needed it.

“Hmph, this bit of money doesn’t show anything. Besides, since when can feelings be measured with money?” Yunxiu’s voice, tinged with sarcasm, immediately followed, “Besides, getting suddenly sent so much money might not be a good thing. Hmph, it wouldn’t be because he did something to let you down, would it?”

Yunxiu was actually seething with jealousy inside—she had never held so much money in her hands before. Why should Yunfang have it?

Isn’t she just engaged to some broken soldier? What’s there to show off?

“You shut your mouth. If you don’t know what to say, then don’t speak. If you’ve got that much spare time, go learn from your mother the things a girl should do, instead of gossiping all day, not acting at all like a proper young lady,” Great Uncle Shen couldn’t stand Yunxiu’s nonsensical chatter, which lacked any grace or propriety that a young woman should have.

“Oh, what’s going on here?” The Grandmother hastily hurried over to defuse the situation, “I’ve been so busy outside I could kick my own head, and here you are, cooped up inside doing God knows what. Can’t you see the bigger picture and come help me with the work?” Although she said “you all” in her speech, her eyes were scolding her daughter-in-law; she couldn’t bear to say a single harsh word to her own daughter.

Wang Li was well aware of her mother-in-law’s antics and, curling her lip, followed her out of the house.

Grandmother Shen hurriedly dragged the reluctant Yunxiu out as well, finally bringing peace to the room.

“Big brother, why did you scold Yunxiu? She didn’t say anything wrong. If someone suddenly sent you that much money, wouldn’t you be worried?” Aunt Shen was purely speaking against Yunfang just to side with her niece.

Uncle Shen didn’t bother with her and turned directly to the silent Yunfang, “Yunfang, what did Li Hongjun say in his letter? Is there a reason he sent this money?” In Uncle Shen’s perspective, he also felt the money wasn’t so straightforward. Not to mention whether Li Hongjun would really give all the money to his niece, but even the Li family wouldn’t let Li Hongjun do something like this.

Yunfang had already folded the remittance slip and tucked it into her pocket, “Uncle, here’s the thing. Didn’t Li Hongjun come home for the New Year’s visit?”

Uncle Shen nodded. It was he who told Li Hongjun that Yunfang was in the county at the time.

“He came to see me at the county, and it just so happened to be mealtime. He saw that I didn’t have any good food to eat during the New Year, so he decided to send me some money to help out,” Yunfang explained briefly.

“Oh dear, this was Li Hongjun’s own idea? What if the Li family finds out, how would that be good?” Second Aunt pretended to be concerned as she spoke.

Yunfang glanced at Second Aunt, then at the frowning Uncle, clearly taking Second Aunt’s words into consideration, “If the Li family knows, then they know. He is my fiancé, and if he wants to give me money, I didn’t steal or rob it. What’s so bad about that?”

“Yo, that’s not the way to see it.” Second Aunt kept a sly grin on her face, “Li Hongjun is the Li family’s son, and the Li family hasn’t divided their property yet. Li Hongjun’s earnings belong to the Li family, and now that he’s giving all his money to you, if the Li family finds out, how could they let it go.”
