Witty Wife, Better Life-Chapter 44 - 42 The First Deal
Chapter 44: Chapter 42 The First Deal
Chapter 44 -42 The First Deal
Speaking of the Xue family, during dinner, Mother Xue found it strange that there were no outsiders at home. “Yunfeng, didn’t you say that your cousin from your uncle’s side was coming over today? Why hasn’t she arrived?” Although Mother Xue felt that her daughter-in-law was being overly delicate just after getting pregnant, she held her tongue during the family discussion for the sake of the next generation. But since the expected guest hadn’t arrived, as the hostess, she still had to show the appropriate concern.
Shen Yunfeng’s hand paused as she was picking up food. Then, she looked up nonchalantly and smiled at her mother-in-law, “Mom, my cousin has already come. But she’s used to being in the countryside and suddenly felt uncomfortable at our house. Seeing her like that made me feel bad, so I asked Jialong to take her back.” Then she glanced at her husband and sent him a covert flirtatious look.
“Yeah, Mom, she came this morning. I sent her straight to the procurement station,” Xue Jialong said, catching his wife’s look and shyly lowering his head.
It’s no wonder Mother Xue wasn’t pleased with this daughter-in-law. In front of her, the mother, she was making eyes at her son. Even if she’s the daughter-in-law, that’s not okay. Wasn’t this like a stab to a mother’s heart?
“Then why didn’t she come to our house for dinner?” That was the original plan, to provide her with three meals a day.
“She did come over at noon, but my cousin said it was too bothersome to run back and forth to our house two or three times a day to eat. I thought about it and agreed. After all, she’s here to help me, and it wouldn’t be good to trouble her too much. So I gave her some money and let her make some food there, which was also less trouble,” Shen Yunfeng explained selectively.
“Ha, you sisters really care about each other, always considering the other’s feelings,” Mother Xue said with an underlying message.
Shen Yunfeng’s face burned. She was smart enough to understand her mother-in-law’s insinuation: even a cousin coming to help couldn’t be bothered too much, her excuse was a total failure.
“Hehe, my cousin is a bit lazy. She’s been like this since we were little. Although I’m her cousin, there’s still a distance between us, so it’s not easy for me to manage her,” she explained somewhat palely.
“Regardless, during the New Year, when someone comes to help us out, we have to take good care of them. Since the child wants to cook for herself there, Jialong, when you have time, go check on her. See what she needs, and if we can help, we should,” said the patriarch of the Xue family.
“Hehe, Dad, that I can do. That kid is really earnest. First thing this morning, she came and got this month’s salary from Feng, mentioning a bunch of stuff she’s lacking. On the way, I even told her to look for me when she went to the supply cooperative, and that made her so happy,” Xue Jialong tried to lighten the mood with what he thought was an amusing tale, hoping to shift the two women’s focus.
To Xue Jialong, what was a joke, to Shen Yunfeng felt like a scorching embarrassment on her face, and she wished she could shut his mouth.
“Oh? As a brother-in-law, you really can be helpful. Take a look if you have any extra supply tickets. If you do, give her a couple. She’s your sister after all. If we have the means, let’s show some kindness,” Father Xue said.
“Sure, Dad, I understand.”
Shen Yunfeng listened with a smile on her face, looking gratefully at her father-in-law from time to time. Inwardly, however, she was fuming. Those were her tickets. Every month, she managed to get a few extra tickets from Xue Jialong. Sometimes she used them to buy things she liked, and sometimes she sold the tickets to supplement the household income. She had not expected that her father-in-law and husband would so easily give them away. Damn, why did she suddenly feel a pang in her stomach again?
Shen Yunfang was completely unaware of the good fortune awaiting her; she was strolling about in the town.
She and Jian Hui had been having a lively chat in the duty room until Jian Hui remembered the scarf she had left at the supply cooperative. This made her rush off from work in a flurry. Meanwhile, Shen Yunfang, diligent as ever, waited until four in the afternoon before she locked up the procurement station and took a stroll out on her own.

It was not easy coming to the county town from Gaijiatun. Last time, she was in such a hurry to buy things and return home that she had no time to wander around. Now, with plenty of time on her hands, she was determined to enjoy a good walk around.
Of course, she had some not-so-pure motives as well. She still couldn’t let go of the hope of trying to see if she could sell off the lettuce and Chinese chives she had on hand.
She strolled along the Clak Streets of the county town. Due to time constraints, by the time she finished walking down one street, it had already gotten dark.
During this time, she saw a state-owned restaurant, but since her pockets were embarrassingly empty she just looked and decided to solve dinner by herself back at the dormitory.
She also saw a hospital, no tall buildings, just three rows of bungalows. And then there was a large area of bungalows, which she heard were the family quarters for the railway and distillery employees.
Shen Yunfang took advantage of the dimming twilight to wander around the houses, her heart racing with anxiety. With goods in hand, she didn’t know how to sell them off without leaving a trace. She wanted to earn money but also wanted to be safe, a bit of a contradiction.
In the end, she steeled her resolve, slightly altering her appearance (that is, she combed her hair anew and let it down to cover most of her face), and then chose a home that looked relatively newer and knocked on the front door.
Then, in less than ten minutes, Shen Yunfang hurried out of that front door, while the middle-aged woman inside acted like an underground party member, first sticking her head out to look left and right to make sure no one was paying attention here, then with a loud clang, shut the courtyard door tightly.
As for Shen Yunfang, she ran along the way, glancing back occasionally to ensure no one was following her, then like the wind sprinted back to the purchasing station, unlocked the door, and burst into her room on the heated brick bed, where she finally dared to breathe heavily.
After lying down for a good while and catching her breath, she started to giggle, the laughter growing louder and louder until she couldn’t contain her joy, jumping a few times on the bed before calming down.
She carefully took out a yuan from the inside pocket of her cotton-padded jacket, which she had just earned from selling a bundle of Chinese chives and a head of lettuce.
Yes, she had just made her first business deal since her rebirth.
She hadn’t expected it to go so smoothly. The door had been opened by a middle-aged woman in her forties, who, upon seeing her, paused then asked who she was looking for.
Shen Yunfang directly asked if the woman would like to buy some Chinese chives and lettuce. She even opened her coat to show the fresh vegetables wrapped inside.
Then the middle-aged woman looked around the entrance to make sure no one was watching and pulled her inside the house. After that, the two began to haggle over the price.
Yunfang had already thought about the prices: six jiao for a bundle of chives, weighing about one and a bit jin, and seven jiao for a head of lettuce, each weighing over one and a half jin.
Yunfang had already accounted for bargaining room, so in the end, they made a deal for one yuan.
Although she only sold one bundle of chives and one head of lettuce today, it was a good start. With this success, Shen Yunfang grew a bit bolder and decided that before the New Year, she would go out again to try to sell as much of the greens from her space as possible.
