Witch, Fireball and the Evil God of Steam-Chapter 904 - 186: Just Call Me Ba Zi
Bazatous felt that in terms of interpersonal communication, He still had a long way to go. If Ethan had come here today, he definitely wouldn't have been shoved out of the space at the end of the crevice by the miners.
But at least, He understood the reason behind the miners setting up the sacrifice ritual.
They wanted to rescue the attacker detained by the Border Administration Bureau. With the charge of the explosion attack confirmed, the prisoner would be publicly executed within three days.
He would be taken to the church square and subjected to capital punishment under the witness of the public and the Goddess of Life.
Bazatous hugged His knees, squatting at the entrance of the crevice deep in thought, while the determined miners chanted spells, initiating the ritual.
Everyone held their breath, facing the two coworkers who volunteered as sacrifices, their eyes full of grief and resolve.
The ritual unsurprisingly failed.
Space and time didn't consider forming a rift due to the spell, as Bazatous listened to the audience request next door and resentfully poked the "reject" option with His hand.
This stalemate lasted for several minutes, surrounded by disorganized footsteps.
The approaching mine guards, upon seeing Bazatous sitting at the crevice entrance like a cave mushroom, were first taken aback. The leading guard frowned and asked in a low voice, "Are you with them?"
The simple reason the guards hadn't rushed forward was that this woman had seven eyes, and her skirt looked like wriggling flesh buds, immediately reminding them of a spider.
They didn't know who brought a demi-human here, but in this border city, demi-humans were absolutely the last thing that the Church Court and the Kingdom Army wanted to provoke. Although few in number, they were extremely united, and the trade association president, Ginny, was no pushover either.
Bazatous glanced at the surrounding guards and shook His head hesitantly.
Why did this demi-human seem a bit dazed?
And He seemed to be emanating a pitch-black, resentful aura.
"Come over here to our side."
The guard captain gestured to Bazatous, who stood up and walked to the end of the guard team.
After sending Bazatous away, the captain immediately commanded the guards to commence the next step of their operation. They ignited the bulging cloth bags and uniformly tossed them to the other end of the crevice.
In an instant, screams from the miners emanated from the other side, and as black smoke spread, the miners had to abandon the sacrificial ritual array, coughing violently and stumbling out of the crevice. When they saw the fully armed guards standing at the crevice exit, their expressions changed immediately, nervously clutching their mining pickaxes.
"Did you really think you could conduct these filthy and vile activities under our noses?"
Seeing the guards had controlled the situation, the overseer who had been hiding in the crowd sneered as he walked to the front. Wearing a gray priest's robe, he was unmistakably the clergy sent to the mines by the Church Court.
"You'd already been watched since you sneaked out to buy ritual materials."
The overseer looked at the middle-aged man at the miners' forefront, "'Blackstone,' you're truly a scoundrel without any conscience. Have you forgotten who offered you a way out when you were drowning in debt?"
Bazatous silently observed the confrontation between the two groups. He noticed that the man called "Blackstone" was the same human who had just shoved Him out of the crevice.
"And you dare speak of conscience!"
The man's rage burst forth, "If you had even an ounce of conscience, you wouldn't have killed an old woman so ruthlessly!"
That became the final straw that broke the miners' resolve. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
"Oh, you mean her."
The overseer's expression remained utterly indifferent, "She attempted to steal important supplies from the Church Court and was caught by the on-duty guards. Such a criminal deserves death."
"I know everything now!"
The man's eyes turned blood-red with fury at these words. Gripping his mining pickaxe, he wanted to smash the overseer's head but was held back by the miners behind him.
The overseer was clearly provoking his anger. If he attacked the overseer, there would only be one outcome—being beaten to death by the guards' hammers.
From the moment the soul sacrifice ritual failed, their plan was doomed to failure.
"That mining disaster, it was caused by you, and that's how you eliminated her son! Now what? Do you plan to deal with me the same way?"
This time, even the other miners were left in a daze.
"...Blackstone, what on earth are you talking about?"
Before this, Blackstone had never mentioned any of this to them.
"The old woman was always searching for evidence. That's why she ventured into the mines repeatedly!"
Blackstone gritted his teeth as he spoke, having never intended to reveal these secrets or let anyone know why the old woman had come to the mines, for fear of leaks, but what he received was grim news.
"Her son was investigating the reason behind the 'holy relic' theft before he was killed."
All of this pointed to the mine overseer and guards, even implicating the Border Administration Bureau. Confronting the overseer, Blackstone said, "For a long time, these scoundrels have been embezzling important strategic resources! Whenever concealment becomes impossible, they find a few innocent people to take the blame!"
"This person has gone mad, completely incomprehensible."
