Chapter 134: The Tables Turned

It was 9pm once again, and the only guests remaining in the inn were Lu Yang and Meng Jingzhou.

The waiter came down from the third floor, carrying an axe with blood still dripping from it. His lips curled into a smile.

Although it was an accident that he had stumbled into this town and was forced to follow its rules, these rules might very well be an opportunity for him—one to let his true nature free.

He had already lost track of how long he’d been in Buyi Town and lost count of how many people he’d killed.

These two are lucky fellows. Buyi Town is riddled with traps, yet they’ve avoided them all and survived until now. The previous batches of guests weren’t this fortunate. Unfamiliar with this place and not believing in the rules, they were soon wiped out.

Among the ten Earth-Grade Rooms, the nine doors that had turned black were evidence. And this didn’t even include the foolish ones who had ventured to the third floor to stay in the Heaven-Grade Rooms.

It’s about time that these newcomers’ luck has run out.

He decided this would be the night he’d knock on their doors until morning. Even if I can’t kill them, I have to torment them.

“Strange, the light in Earth-Grade Room Four has been on for the past two nights. Why is it dark tonight?” The waiter quickly figured out the reason and sneered. “Did you think that would make me spare you? How naive.”

He adjusted his tone as he gently knocked on the wooden door, “Guests, please open the door. Perhaps there is some misunderstanding between us.” He paused for a bit and repeated in a more steady and reassuring voice, “Guests, please open the door. Perhaps there is some misunderstanding between us.”

There was still no response.

Suddenly, a hand from out of nowhere grabbed his ankle.

“Who is it!”

He immediately looked down and saw that a dog-sized hole had somehow appeared at the bottom of the wall to Earth-Grade Room Four. A pale hand had reached out of the hole, clutching his ankle tightly.

Thud. The hand had such immense strength that it yanked him down. As the waiter crashed to the ground, his axe also flew to the side.

He desperately tried to crawl away, trying to break free, but the hand’s grip far exceeded his imagination. I can’t escape! I’ve always been the one yanking people, and now I’m the one being yanked!

I’m going to die! A ridiculous thought crossed his mind. But how can that be? I’m the hunter! The guests are the prey!

“No, this can’t be!” The waiter recalled the second rule.

<From 9pm to 9am, thatched cottages and inns with closed doors are absolutely safe; anywhere else is dangerous.>

The door to Earth-Grade Room Four is closed, so it’s an absolutely safe space for guests. If I get pulled into the room, I’ll definitely meet with a tragic end!

The waiter wretchedly clawed at the floorboards with his fingers, like a prey that was half-swallowed by a giant python, yet still attempting to escape. He screamed at the top of his lungs, “Help! Help! Save me!”

His cries were full of genuine despair.

Unfortunately for him, no one came to his rescue.

“Buyi Town’s Inn Rules” mentioned nothing about saving the waiter.

When half of his body was dragged inside, he braced himself against the walls tenaciously and exerted a final burst of strength, finally breaking free. He didn’t even bother to pick up his axe as he hurriedly limped back to the Heaven-Grade Rooms.

“He escaped?” Meng Jingzhou sighed. The waiter’s strength was astonishing; he couldn’t hold on to him even after crushing his ankle.

They had sworn to take care of the annoying waiter tonight, who had nothing better to do than to knock on their door every night. You should have gone out to inquire about us. As almighty branch leaders of the diabolic creed, when have we ever suffered such disrespect?!

After two days of observation, the two had understood the rules of the inn and swiftly designed a plan. First, Lu Yang would use his Qingfeng sword and dig a hole at the bottom of the wall according to the waiter’s stature. By making use of the rule that “rooms with closed doors are safe,” they would ensure that they could pull the waiter in without getting harmed by him; they would still hold the upper hand.

“It’s only interesting when we have an energetic prey!” Lu Yang’s lips curved into a cruel smile, his frightening voice echoing through the room.

Two dark figures walked out of Earth-Grade Room Four. One held a sword, while the other was unarmed and picked up the fallen axe. The tip of the sword scraped along the ground, emitting an irregular scratching sound, accompanied by the sound of blood dripping from the axe.

With their bloodstained weapons, two dark figures prowled the inn.

Nothing on the second floor...That means it has to be on the third floor.

There were a total of four rooms on the third floor, all of which were Heaven-Grade Rooms.

The dark figure wielding the sword knocked on the door and spoke gently, “We heard there’s free dinner here. We are hungry and would like to eat. Please open the door.”

Hearing no response from Heaven-Grade Room One, Lu Yang grew impatient and banged the door. “Open the door! We want to eat! What kind of service is this?

“There’s some misunderstanding between us. Open the door, and we can have a nice chat!

“Open the door! Open the door now! If you don’t, I’ll be bashing it down!”

The deafening knocks reverberated throughout the entire inn.

Lu Yang kicked open the door of Heaven-Grade Room One, but there was no one inside. He wanted to go in, but a force barred his way.

<Rule 5: You cannot enter the Heaven-Grade Rooms.>

The waiter was hiding inside one of the rooms, and he trembled as he heard the commotion. “Don’t...don’t be afraid. The rules say that they cannot enter Heaven-Grade Rooms. They can’t come in...they can’t come in...” He mumbled to himself over and over again, but that did nothing to quell the uneasiness in his heart.

Lu Yang had already kicked open the doors to Heaven-Grade Rooms Two and Three, but he still found no trace of the waiter.

“It has to be Heaven-Grade Room Four then!”

Without hesitation, he kicked the door open. In the darkness, he saw the waiter huddled up into a ball.

“Come out! I’ll spare your life!” Meng Jingzhou threatened menacingly.

Discerning Meng Jingzhou’s bluff, the waiter relaxed and laughed out loud. “Haha, I knew it, you also have to abide by the rules!” Only I can decide who enters the Heaven-Grade Rooms. Besides, I also hold an absolute advantage inside these rooms. No one can harm me!

Just as the waiter contemplated whether he should pull the two of them in, Lu Yang unhurriedly pulled out a wooden plaque from behind him. As soon as the waiter laid his eyes on it, his expression became one of sheer horror.

The wooden plaque read: Earth-Grade Room Four

Lu Yang had anticipated that such a scenario might occur, so he tried swapping the door plaque of Earth-Grade Room Three with that of Earth-Grade Room Four, and Room Three’s black door turned brown, proving that it had become “Earth-Grade Room Four.”

His method did work.

Switching the door plaque of Heaven-Grade Room Four to that of Earth-Grade Room Four, the barrier vanished, and they were now free to enter.

One held a sword, and one carried an axe, their lips twisted into terrifying smiles.

Under the waiter’s horrified gaze, the two stepped inside the room and considerately closed the door.

Now, this was Earth-Grade Room Four—an absolutely safe place for them.

Lu Yang sent the waiter sprawling with a kick and severed the tendons of his limbs to prevent him from escaping; Meng Jingzhou gave him two resounding slaps as payback for frightening them. Then, they made him change into the white clothes.

“Tell us everything you know!”

<Rule 17: Do not easily trust the words of strangers, but everything said by someone clad in white clothes is true.>
