Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Grandma Fitzwilliam Is Coming

Kylie Dalton could hardly believe her ears, "Elara Hale, do you know what you’re saying? I never thought you were such a heartless woman. Mason was even willing to give up his family inheritance to marry you, is this how you repay him? Do you think you deserve him?"

Each question was like a slap, harshly landing on Elara Hale’s heart.

Her eyes flickered with a hint of hurt, but she quickly hid it and said softly, "If this is all you want to say, then there’s no need to continue this conversation. I’m hanging up."

With that, she hung up the phone.

The oppressive feeling in her ears suddenly loosened, and Elara Hale let out a gentle breath, as if by doing so, she could expel all the suppression in her heart.

Kylie Dalton’s words were truly laughable. Had she wronged Mason Jacobs? Mason was the person she felt she had done right by most in her life.

Heartless... If this was considered heartless, then so be it.

Elara Hale looked out the window, recalling the scene of meeting Mason Jacobs for the first time three years ago.

At that time, her family had suddenly encountered a misfortune, her life was in chaos, and Zara Dalton, fearing she would become depressed keeping everything inside, forcibly dragged her to a banquet.

The banquet that night was lavish. She stood in the corner, like a clown lurking in the shadows, watching other people’s glamorous lives. She wondered why, among so many people, it was her parents who had such a severe car accident? Why were the dead and injured her family members?

They couldn’t even find the perpetrator. Why was the world so unfair?

It was at that moment that Mason Jacobs suddenly burst into her view. She still remembered that day, he wore a white suit, smiling, giving off a feeling of a warm spring breeze.

He stopped in front of her with a glass of champagne, looked at her for a bit, and asked, "Not fond of this kind of setting?"

Elara Hale didn’t deny it and nodded. She indeed didn’t like feeling out of place.

Mason Jacobs gazed at her deeply, then after a while said, "You give off a vibe that’s too pure; you’re not suited for this place. I’ll take you somewhere else."

With that, he directly took her wrist. Having lived for over twenty years, Elara Hale had never been in a relationship and had never had physical contact with a strange man. Her instinct was to resist. Mason Jacobs paused, then gentlemanly withdrew his hand, looking at her with a slightly apologetic smile, "I’m sorry."

Because of this apology, Elara Hale had a good impression of him and, almost impulsively, followed him out of the venue.

She never expected that right behind the luxurious venue was a small garden. The garden was surrounded by flowers, and beautiful roses climbed the iron fence gate, with a mysterious fragrance in the air.

Behind her, Mason Jacobs said, "I’ve bought this little garden almost ten years ago, and rarely asked anyone to maintain it. The plants just grew randomly. Who would have thought after ten years, it would be so lush."

He paused, then continued, "Life is like this garden. The obstacles you think you can’t get past, when you look back after moving forward, are actually the medals of your life."

Elara Hale’s heart trembled, suddenly realizing that he had long seen through her grief and frustration, comforting her in this way.

The breeze was gentle that night, the flower fragrance lingering, and under the moonlight, the man’s figure was tall and upright. She still remembered the moment her heart skipped a beat.

Gathering her thoughts, everything felt like it was just yesterday. In just three years, she’d become a mosquito bite in Mason Jacobs’ eye.

Just then, her phone suddenly rang. As she picked it up, she saw it was from Zion Fitzwilliam.

"Can you come home early after work tonight?"

Elara Hale hesitated for a moment, then started typing, "I have plans with friends to hang out."

She had made the plan last night with Zara Dalton and Esther Carter. Feeling unwell, she had only briefly informed Zara Dalton, who was likely worried about her. It was a good chance to share the details with them over dinner tonight.

But before she could hit send, Zion Fitzwilliam’s next message arrived, "Grandma says she’ll be over tonight."

Elara Hale immediately sat up, hurriedly replying, "Why so suddenly? Is there something Grandma Fitzwilliam needs?"

Zion Fitzwilliam replied, "She says she misses you."

Elara Hale was both surprised and flattered, quickly replying, "Okay, I’ll come home early. What does Grandma Fitzwilliam like to eat? I’ll buy ingredients and cook dinner."

Zion Fitzwilliam replied, "She likes everything you make."

After a pause, he added, "Grandma says you don’t need to buy ingredients, she’s bringing her own food and meat."

Elara Hale was at a loss for words. She honestly had no experience with in-law relationships. Her relationship with Kylie Dalton was nowhere near equal; Kylie only treated her as a free maid.

But Grandma Fitzwilliam wasn’t like that. She felt for her laboring in the kitchen and believed she compromised by marrying Zion Fitzwilliam. With such sincere and honest elders, Elara Hale was unsure of how to repay them.

After some thought, she asked Zion Fitzwilliam, "What kind of fruit does Grandma like?"

If she couldn’t buy groceries, she’d buy snacks and fruit instead.

Zion Fitzwilliam replied, "She likes whatever you buy."

Fearing she might think he was brushing her off, he quickly added, "I’m not lying."

Elara Hale couldn’t help but smile.

The oppressive mood from her previous call with Kylie Dalton had eased considerably.

The Fitzwilliam Family was truly different from the Jacobs Family. Who said wealth guaranteed goodness? If she had a choice now, she definitely wouldn’t choose the wealthy Jacobs Family.

A family that cares for her, understands her struggles, and is willing to interact with her on an equal footing is one worth spending a lifetime with.

Thinking of this, Elara Hale felt a tinge of regret. If only Zion Fitzwilliam weren’t gay, what a perfect match it would be to introduce him to Esther Carter.

At a private club in Kyros, Esther Carter suddenly sneezed, and Zara Dalton looked up, "Caught a cold? I have medicine in my bag, want some?"

Esther Carter rubbed her nose and shook her head, "No! I’m healthy; it must have been the wind when I was on surveillance this morning that caused it. It’ll be fine after a nap."

Zara Dalton knew her stubbornness about not taking medicine even when terribly ill and didn’t press the matter, just frowned and asked, "Do you think we’re overthinking things?"

The more they thought about last night’s events, the more suspicious they felt. They concluded that Zion Fitzwilliam wasn’t simple and were worried about Elara Hale’s situation, which was why they had scouted out Zion Fitzwilliam’s community today.

But they found nothing out of the ordinary. At eight, they saw Zion Fitzwilliam leave the house, followed him, and watched him take a bus to Aethel Insurance Headquarters, then have lunch with coworkers at noon.

In short, Zion Fitzwilliam didn’t seem to have any issues.

So the two of them found a nearby club to discuss their next steps.

Zara Dalton thought for a moment, "Why not wait for tonight when Elara comes over, and then we’ll know better after we talk?"

Esther Carter also thought it was a good idea; running around like headless chickens wasn’t a solution either.

Just then, a message popped up in their group chat from Elara Hale, "Stella, Zara, I can’t make it tonight. Grandma Fitzwilliam is coming over, I have to stay home to accompany the guests."

Esther Carter frowned and muttered, "Aren’t they in a fake marriage? Why is even the grandma coming over? What does this mean?"

Zara Dalton thought for a moment, "Could it be to verify the authenticity of their marriage?"

After all, it was a sudden marriage; suspicion from the groom’s family was only natural.

Esther Carter looked over at her, "So, should we continue to keep an eye on it?"

Zara Dalton hesitated, "Why don’t we go check out this Grandma Fitzwilliam?"

In case she’s a fierce character, it would be good to give Elara a heads-up.

Esther Carter thought it was a solid idea and made the decision, "Then let’s do it!"
