Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 185: Grayson Family Cancels the Engagement
Café.
After Elara left, Kylie Dalton stood up angrily and said to Mason Jacobs, "Look at how arrogant she’s become now. She never used to speak to me like that! I think it was unnecessary for you to apologize to her; she doesn’t care about us!"
Mason Jacobs frowned slightly, "Mom, don’t forget our predicament."
Kylie Dalton knew the importance of the situation, but ever since her husband left home and her son took over the company, she hadn’t experienced such humiliation in years.
Now having her warm face met with Elara’s cold shoulder, how could she tolerate it?
Lately, even her ever-dutiful and obedient son had been speaking harshly to her; she was dying of irritation inside and said resentfully, "Anyway, the Jacobs Family is in such a state now. If you want to marry Elara into our family, I won’t oppose it, but I will only apologize to her this once. I won’t lower myself for her anymore, just don’t drag me into this. You can handle it however you want!"
As she finished speaking, she took out her phone, making a call while walking outside.
Mason Jacobs took a few deep breaths, watching Kylie Dalton’s figure walk out of the café door. He forcibly suppressed the violence in his heart; even though he now had murderous impulses, the pressing issue was to solve the current problem first.
He took out a business card from his suit jacket; this was a private card of Mr. Grayson obtained from Mrs. Grayson through Rosalind Jacobs.
He dialed the number on it, and after a short while, a steady male voice emerged, "Hello?"
Mason Jacobs spoke up, "Elder Uncle Grayson, hello, I am Mason Jacobs. Do you have some time? I would like to meet with you."
Expectedly, he thought the other party might dismiss him, but unexpectedly, Mr. Grayson paused briefly and then said, "Coincidentally, I have something to discuss with you too, but I am not in Northgarde right now, so..."
Before he could finish, Mason Jacobs quickly said, "No problem, Northgarde isn’t far from Seacliff, I’ll catch the fastest flight over there."
Mr. Grayson responded with a simple "Hmm," and said, "Then contact me once you arrive."
There wasn’t a word of courtesy; he just hung up directly.
Mason Jacobs put down the phone, not angry. He thought about what Mr. Grayson said during the call, feeling suspicious over what Mr. Grayson wanted to say? Could it be that the Grayson Family has decided to let Jacobs Corporation carry out a project?
Besides that, he couldn’t think of anything else important enough for Mr. Grayson to personally come forward.
Outside, Kylie Dalton was making calls while hailing a taxi.
Yet, she couldn’t get through to Patrick Doyle.
She felt a bit anxious; Doyle usually valued her the most. Even if he was in class, he would answer her call at the first moment.
What’s wrong today? She called continuously, but no one answered.
Kylie Dalton worried, could he be ill?
She felt uneasy, initially planning to go home, but hesitated and said to the driver, "Please take me to The Everwill Club."
Soon she arrived at The Everwill Club. Upon entering, a waiter came up, diligently asking, "Lila, here to see our Patrick again today?"
Kylie Dalton smiled and replied, "Doyle hasn’t been picking up my calls today, I’m worried, just came to check in. Where is he?"
The waiter paused for a moment, "After you left this morning, Patrick said he was going to find you, and he left, hasn’t come back since. What, haven’t you been in contact?"
Hearing this, Kylie Dalton’s face suddenly changed, and she turned to leave the club, calling Mason Jacobs.
Mason Jacobs quickly answered, his tone indifferent, "Mom, what’s up?"
Kylie Dalton took a deep breath and asked sternly, "Mason, you promised me not to touch Patrick Doyle!"
Mason Jacobs said, "I didn’t touch him."
Kylie Dalton raised her voice, "Impossible, I asked at the store, after I left today, he followed. If you didn’t touch him, why would he disappear?"
Mason Jacobs sounded helpless, "Mom, he is a college student, young and good-looking. Do you truly think he is devoted to you? Men like that who sell themselves, they’re just for fun. For all you know, he might be in bed with one of his girlfriends now. If you take it seriously, you’d lose."
Kylie Dalton retorted uncomfortably, "Don’t use your logic to insult our relationship with Doyle. He’s different from other men; he’s sincere to me."
Mason Jacobs just chuckled and didn’t say more.
Kylie Dalton remained unconvinced, "Really not your doing?"
Mason Jacobs said, "I’ve been so busy lately, I have no time to bother with your matters."
Kylie Dalton hesitated, knowing she wouldn’t get any answers, so she said, "Anyway, you know Doyle is important to me; without my consent, you can’t touch him."
Mason Jacobs said, "Got it."
Kylie Dalton hung up the phone, feeling a bit suspicious. If it wasn’t Mason who interfered, why couldn’t she reach Doyle?
She asked the front desk, "Do you know where Doyle lives?"
The receptionist apologetically shook their head, "No idea."
"Alright," Kylie Dalton reluctantly agreed, "If he comes, ask him to call me, suddenly becoming unreachable, it’s worrying."
The receptionist quickly nodded, "Sure, don’t worry, Lila. I’ll let him know when I see him."
Kylie Dalton left The Everwill Club, still feeling somewhat anxious. She recalled some things, her face involuntarily turned pale.
It shouldn’t be Mason, since he denied it, it certainly wasn’t him.
Kylie Dalton kept reassuring herself over and over.
Meanwhile, Mason Jacobs took the quickest flight and arrived in Seacliff.
Sitting in Mr. Grayson’s office, he couldn’t believe what he heard, "Cancelling the engagement? Why?"
He thought Mr. Grayson had proactively met him to undertake a project, but surprisingly, once they met, Mr. Grayson said he was going to call off the engagement between Owen Grayson and Rosalind Jacobs!
Mason Jacobs hardly ever felt nervous in recent years, but now there was truly a layer of cold sweat on his back; given the current predicament of the Jacobs Family, frankly speaking, it was on the verge of collapse.
If the engagement with the Grayson Family held, the Jacobs Family could temporarily maintain its current state, but if they backed out, Jacobs Corporation would collapse immediately!
Those shareholders would seize the opportunity whenever they could, leaving him no chance!
Mason Jacobs took a deep breath to calm himself, sincerely asking, "Why cancel the engagement? Did Rosalind do something wrong? Or did the Jacobs Family offend you somehow?"
Mr. Grayson, a jovial middle-aged man, smiled and waved his hand hearing this, "It’s not due to the Jacobs Family, nor is it about Rosalind. It’s because of my son; he promised well earlier but suddenly changed his mind. I am really helpless. If I don’t cancel, he’d sever ties with me as his father, leaving me in a tough spot."
Mason looked at Mr. Grayson’s smile but didn’t feel it was difficult for him at all.
"But we’ve already arranged their engagement, and suddenly breaking it off..."
Mason appeared troubled.
At this point, it was clear the Grayson family had made up their minds. Unable to change their decision, he could only seize the opportunity to negotiate better terms for the Jacobs family.
After all, breaking off an engagement, no matter how you put it, was the Grayson family’s fault. The woman’s reputation suffers in a broken engagement, so the Grayson family should offer some sort of compensation.
Mr. Grayson showed a knowing look and nodded, saying, "Rest assured, this sudden break-off is our fault. Here’s the deal: weren’t there a few projects you liked before? If you’re still interested, I can have you involved, how about that?"
Mason was pleasantly surprised, a bit excited as he asked, "Really?"
Mr. Grayson smiled and nodded, "Of course it’s true! I said it, breaking off the engagement is the Grayson family’s mistake, and I will try my best to compensate you."
Mason immediately stood up and said to Mr. Grayson, "You’re too kind. Actually, Rosalind’s background wasn’t a match for Rhys, and I’ve always been worried about the mismatch. Now that the engagement is off, it’s a weight off my mind."
Mr. Grayson said with a smile, "In that case, we’re settled then. The engagement is canceled, and we’ll involve you in the Grayson family’s projects."
"Thank you, Elder Uncle Grayson, for your support." Mason’s major concern was finally resolved, and he said with a broad smile.
When Mason left Mr. Grayson’s office, his steps were noticeably lighter.
Mr. Grayson looked at the closed office door and breathed a sigh of relief. Once the footsteps outside faded, he immediately picked up the phone to make a call.
"Hello, Assistant Morgan, I’ve spoken to Mason according to President Fitzwilliam’s instructions. Yes, he’s quite pleased. The Jacobs family is under siege now, and he urgently needs those projects to catch a break."
"Alright, I’ll continue following President Fitzwilliam’s directives to get him involved in those projects, guiding him to put all his chips on them? Okay, I’ll give it a try!"
On the other end of the line, Miles Morgan chuckled, "President Grayson, once this is successful, you’ll be well rewarded, you know."
"Assistant Morgan, please convey to President Fitzwilliam that I will do my utmost to alleviate his worries!"
After hanging up, Mr. Grayson smiled so broadly his mouth almost reached his ears.
Initially, when President Fitzwilliam suggested Rhys marry Rosalind, he was reluctant. But the turnaround came quickly; first, Rhys confessed that he had met a girl he liked, and then President Fitzwilliam asked him to find an opportunity to get Mason involved in the new projects.
Yesterday, he cautiously mentioned Rhys’s desire to break off the engagement to President Fitzwilliam, expecting him to disagree, but President Fitzwilliam simply acknowledged it without any objection.
So he took the opportunity to offer the projects as compensation to Mason.
Even though he couldn’t see any issues with those projects, since they were part of President Fitzwilliam’s plan, they must be flawlessly designed to catch people off guard. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
Mason, now, was probably doomed.
And after leaving Mr. Grayson’s office, Mason returned to Northgarde and told Rosalind about calling off the engagement.
At first, Rosalind thought Mason was joking with her, "Breaking off the engagement? How is that possible? Rhys and I are already engaged, and even the wedding date is set. Brother, you’re scaring me—use a better excuse next time. Do you think I would believe you?"
Mason, lacking patience, said, "I personally went to Seacliff. The Grayson family has decided to break off the engagement. Be prepared for that; the Grayson family should announce it soon."
Realizing that Mason wasn’t joking, Rosalind found it unbelievable. "This is absurd. I haven’t done anything wrong. Why is the engagement being called off at the last moment? What about my reputation?"
Mason said, "The Grayson family has made their decision, and we can only passively accept it. To make up for your loss, the Grayson family agreed to let us handle those projects. Once the company is back on track, I’ll transfer you some spending money, and you can take a trip abroad."
Rosalind wasn’t satisfied, "Everything was going well with the engagement, and I even talked about it in my circles. Now that it’s off, how will I..."
Mason, impatient with her complaints, hung up the phone.
On the other end, Rosalind was fuming, sitting in her chair. After a while, her expression darkened.
Everything was fine before the Warner family wedding; it was only after that the Grayson family canceled the engagement.
It must be Elara. She must have said something to that old lady, who pressured Elder Aunt Grayson, leading to the engagement being called off!
Elara!
Rosalind gritted her teeth, thinking, she didn’t even provoke her; why was Elara out to get her?
She grabbed her bag and dashed out. She wouldn’t just let this go. If Elara thought she’d keep quiet, she was wrong!
In the afternoon, Zion Fitzwilliam parked outside Elara Hale’s company and sent her a text, "I’m here."
Seeing the message, Elara felt a tightness in her chest. Although she agreed to have dinner with Grandma Fitzwilliam in the evening, she hadn’t expected Zion to come pick her up.
But she wasn’t exactly surprised. After all, in the morning, he had confidently told her he had the right to pursue her.
Feeling a mess inside, Elara grabbed her bag and headed downstairs. Stepping outside the company, she saw a crowd gathered around a limited edition luxury car, exclaiming in awe. Elara had a bad premonition, and sure enough, the next moment, the car door opened, and Zion waved her over.
Elara pressed her lips together and got into the car under the envious eyes of the onlookers.
If she’d known his arrival would cause such a scene, she would’ve preferred to take a taxi.
Zion seemed to notice her thoughts and explained in a good-natured manner, "The car I was previously driving got scrapped, and I didn’t have any cars set up in Northgarde, so I bought a couple of business vehicles. But I felt it was strange to pick you up in one, so I borrowed one from Brandon White."
Brandon’s cars all had a distinctive style of being flashy and cool. He had picked a relatively low-key one from Brandon’s garage.
Elara didn’t know what to say. She felt that since they were supposed to break up, she shouldn’t be too nice to him, so she replied curtly, "You don’t need to explain this to me."
She expected Zion to be displeased; after all, someone so high and mighty, she was practically giving him the cold shoulder.
To her surprise, Zion merely smiled indulgently and said, "Alright."
Elara: ...
Just then, there was a sudden banging on the car door from outside. The car windows were tinted, but Elara was surprised to see it was Rosalind knocking.
What was she doing here? How had she offended her again?
Zion lowered the window, his expression slightly annoyed, "What is it?"
Rosalind looked anxious, "Mr. Fitzwilliam, do you not know how frightening the woman you plan to marry actually is? She appears innocent and naive, but she’s full of schemes and has done many shady things. She’s not worthy of you!"
"If you’re interested, I can tell you in detail about how cunning she is! She’s only after your money; she doesn’t love you at all!"
