Chapter 93: Chapter 93: He’s Away, and Luna Can’t Sleep

Fortunately, first aid was administered quickly on the scene. As soon as the ambulance reached the hospital, Julian Fairchild was rushed through the emergency room’s priority lane.

After Julian Fairchild was stabilized, the necessary paperwork was completed, and he was admitted to the cardiology department for observation.

Luna Axton and Jenna Axton arrived at the hospital with personal items and comfortable clothes for both the grandfather and grandson.

Too ashamed to face Jenna Axton and her daughter, Julian Fairchild turned his back to the door and pretended to be asleep.

"Is Grandpa not feeling well?" Luna Axton whispered to Blaze.

Blaze glanced at the man in the bed and mercilessly exposed him. "His lifetime of prestige is in shambles. He’s just embarrassed."

Luna glared at him. "How can you still be trying to rile Grandpa up at a time like this?"

"He brought it on himself."

"I can hear you," came Julian Fairchild’s mournful, slow voice. He clearly hadn’t recovered from the emotional turmoil.

"If you can hear us, then stop being embarrassed. No one’s judging you."

Julian Fairchild snatched a throw pillow and tossed it at Blaze. "You rotten kid."

Blaze easily caught the pillow with both hands, his teasing words carrying a hint of levity. "Well, if you have the strength to throw things, you can probably be discharged after three days of observation."

Julian Fairchild wasn’t one to stay awkward for long. He saw Jenna Axton silently organizing his things without a word.

His face flushed as he spoke up. "Adriana, thank you."

Jenna Axton closed the cabinet door, pulled a stool over, and sat by his bed. "Mr. Fairchild, I understand why you did it. If Luna weren’t doing well out there, I would also bring her back to Kensing."

’We’re both parents. Of course I understand how Mr. Fairchild felt when he made that decision.’ 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

At Jenna Axton’s words of understanding, Julian Fairchild’s eyes instantly welled with tears.

He started to wipe his tears with the corner of the blanket, but Jenna Axton stopped him. "That’s not clean. Use this."

In her palm was the very handkerchief he always used.

’Even Adriana remembers details like this.’

’How could I have been so foolish as to think Rosalind would ever be this thoughtful or patient with me?’

What Rosalind Fairchild did today had thoroughly broken his heart.

The sweet, clumsy little girl from his memories, who used to run into his arms, had finally grown into an adult who would stab him in the heart.

His heart ached for Rosalind, but he hadn’t considered the bigger picture.

’I really should have listened to Frost, focused on my own health, and stayed out of other people’s business.’

"Blaze." He patted the space on the bed beside him. "You sit here. Luna, you too."

Julian Fairchild took one of their hands in each of his. Although he still wore a nasal cannula, the color had clearly returned to his face, and his lips were no longer blue.

He said, "Blaze, Luna, I’m sorry. Grandpa failed to be impartial, and you two were wronged because of it."

Luna Axton shook her head. She didn’t feel wronged at all.

’That’s Rosalind Fairchild’s home. It’s where she grew up. There’s nothing wrong with her wanting to come back and live there.’

’But Rosalind Fairchild has an erratic personality and acts with no moral compass whatsoever. She’s a ticking time bomb, which is why everyone is so guarded around her.’

"Blaze, I know your aunt has always been competing with your father, but I never expected she would go this far. Without realizing it, Grandpa ended up hurting you."

"What your Aunt Adriana said woke me up. I clearly recognize my mistake. From now on, I won’t interfere in matters between you and your aunt. I give you my word."

"From now on..." Julian Fairchild said, placing Blaze’s hand in Luna Axton’s palm. "I’m entrusting Blaze to you, Luna."

Luna Axton lowered her gaze. ’How could I possibly be worthy of that?’

’If anything, Blaze is the one who helps me more often.’

"Luna, Grandpa’s getting old and muddle-headed. I did you wrong and almost hurt you because of my own stubbornness. I apologize."

Luna shook her head. "There’s nothing to apologize for, Grandpa."

"As long as you’re not angry with me, that’s all that matters." Julian Fairchild squeezed their hands, his face full of relief. "From now on, you two must walk your path together. Talk things through with each other."

"Okay," Luna Axton nodded.

Blaze raised an eyebrow. "What? Are you trying to get out of your guardian duties already? Just going to dump me on Luna?"

Julian Fairchild knew exactly what his grandson meant. ’The poor kid is scared.’

He patted his grandson’s chest. "Don’t you worry. Grandpa is in great shape. I still have to watch you two have your wedding and give me a second, third, and fourth great-grandchild."

Luna quietly stuck out her tongue. ’Who could possibly have that many kids!’

’It’ll be an achievement just to raise Lucky into a well-adjusted, mentally healthy child.’

"With a wife like Luna, your future will be a smooth and peaceful one. Of course Grandpa has to take this chance to put in a good word for you. A fine grandson like you deserves some praise from his own grandpa."

Despite his emotional state earlier, he had clearly seen all the small interactions between Blaze and Luna today.

’Whenever Blaze got agitated, Luna was always the one to soothe him.’

As Julian Fairchild finished speaking, he gave the two of them a meaningful look.

Blaze looked away, not taking his grandfather’s bait. "I can handle my own affairs. You don’t need to worry about it."

Julian Fairchild gave their hands one last firm squeeze before letting go. He teased Blaze, "What’s there to be embarrassed about!"

Blaze clenched the hand Grandpa Fairchild had just released, remaining silent.

Luna Axton had signed her share of critical condition notices and informed consent forms.

’She understood his inability to express himself, and the cautiousness that came with nearly losing someone and getting them back.’

’When his grandfather collapsed, Blaze was more frantic than anyone.’

’While performing CPR, when he saw his grandfather wasn’t responding, his tears had dripped onto the old man’s clothes.’

Luna Axton smiled sweetly and deftly changed the subject.

"Grandpa, you need to rest up. We have to get you discharged before the Spring Festival. If you don’t get better, I’ll go ask Grandpa Frost to prescribe you some of his super bitter traditional medicine."

"No, no!" A look of terror crossed Julian Fairchild’s face as he waved his hands in refusal. "Your Grandpa Frost would definitely add extra bitter herbs on purpose, just to torture me. He used to love tricking me into eating nasty-tasting concoctions."

Luna laughed. "Grandpa Frost sounds so mischievous."

Julian Fairchild tilted his head, a look of utter grievance in his eyes. "You have no idea."

She was deliberately trying to lighten the mood, and Julian Fairchild played along willingly.

With everyone having spoken their minds and Luna acting as a mediator, the small rift between them was promptly mended.

Luna Axton and Jenna Axton left the hospital at nightfall, leaving Blaze to stay with his grandfather overnight.

「That night.」

Luna Axton was alone in bed. Every so often, the sound of rustling sheets broke the silence.

With Blaze gone, she couldn’t sleep.

Tossing and turning, Luna remembered the copy of *Narrow Gate* Blaze had left on the nightstand.

’Maybe I should read for a bit.’

She switched on the reading lamp, leaned back against the headboard, and began to flip through the pages.

The world outside was as silent as a frozen stream, and the room was perfectly still.

The orange-yellow light fell on Luna’s fair face, casting a soft, hazy halo around her.

The beauty under the lamp turned the pages one by one, completely immersed in the world of the book.

The book was less than seventy thousand words long, so it didn’t take Luna much time to finish.

Closing the book, she found her thoughts were still churning, unable to settle.

Only a few short words could summarize her feelings about the book.

’Pure love, and the ultimate push-and-pull of an avoidant personality.’

On the last page of the book, there was a line written in fountain pen.

Her eyes fell upon the line of text.

I won’t love some idealized person from my imagination. I will love someone who makes me happy, someone who makes me feel that it’s good to be alive. The person who makes my heart flutter—that’s my ideal type.

Each stroke was neat and tidy, revealing the writer’s sincere reverence for love, as well as their delicate inner world.

Luna thought of Blaze’s impassive, solemn face and the forceful signature on their prenuptial agreement. This neat script didn’t seem like something he would write.

And yet, judging by its publication date and worn condition, and the fact that it was in Blaze’s study...

’If the book isn’t Blaze’s, then who does it belong to?’

A possibility flashed through her mind, and Luna’s heart suddenly stuttered, skipping a beat.

Her gaze fell back onto the handwritten line, as if searching for proof.

’Could this book really belong to Blaze’s ex-girlfriend?’

Luna closed the book. She had no answer, and instead, her mood turned sullen, a stuffy feeling tightening in her chest.

DING!

She was staring blankly at the ceiling when her phone, resting on the nightstand, suddenly chimed.

A new message had arrived.
