Chapter 126: Chapter 126: Carrying My Child and Walking Away

Russell Frost put down his chopsticks. Hungry or not, he had to smooth things over with her first.

"Alright," he said. "Let’s both be honest and have an open conversation. Are you willing to do that?"

A glimmer of hope appeared in Jenna Axton’s eyes. She sniffled. "If I’m honest, you’ll leave me alone."

Russell Frost’s dark gaze settled on her. After a moment, he finally said, "We’ll see."

"Hah," Jenna Axton scoffed. He was clearly just messing with her. And to think she’d actually been hopeful for a few seconds. "In that case, I choose not to talk."

"I have all the time in the world. Come find me when you’ve thought it over. Now, eat."

Jenna Axton glared at the man across from her. He was the one with the questions, yet he was trying to make *her* be the one to initiate the conversation.

He was always like this, always able to turn the tables and seize the upper hand, twisting every situation to his advantage.

In the past, she had been young and naive, but things were different now. She had matured.

Jenna Axton picked up her bowl and began to eat, her expression calm and unbothered.

Russell Frost ate until he was mostly full.

When Jenna Axton finished, he cleared the table and took the dishes to the kitchen to wash.

Halfway through washing the dishes, he suddenly poked his head out and asked with a grin, "Adriana, you haven’t told me if my cooking was any good."

"It’s... edible."

Having eaten her fill, Jenna Axton was in a better mood. She got up, went to her room, and changed into some comfortable loungewear.

’Since I can’t get rid of him anyway, I might as well accept the fact that he’s staying here.’ 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Russell Frost scoffed. "You don’t mean that. I thought it was delicious."

After cleaning the kitchen, Russell Frost made himself at home, sitting leisurely on the sofa as he called his secretary.

"Hughes, bring the suitcase from my office to the Kensing High School faculty housing."

Jenna Axton, having just changed, opened her door right as he said that.

’Does that mean he’s been living in his office this whole time?’

Jenna Axton realized she was starting to worry about him again and immediately forced herself to stop.

’I can’t be like this. If I focus on a book, I won’t have time to think about him.’

She grabbed a book and sat down on the other end of the sofa.

"Aren’t you going to make some tea?" Russell Frost’s voice held a hint of amusement.

’She was always particular about these things. She had to have tea when she read, and it had to be in a nice cup, too.’

Jenna Axton shot him a look, shifted her legs away from him, and rested her book on the armrest. She curled up in the corner, putting as much distance between them as possible.

"Fine, I’ll wait on you, then."

"I don’t want any," Jenna Axton said quickly, stopping him.

She hadn’t moved, but it wasn’t because she was waiting for his offer. She mostly drank plain water these days to reduce the strain on her liver and kidneys.

Russell Frost, who had already started to stand up, sat back down. He didn’t ask why.

The living room fell silent once more.

Jenna Axton tried to read her book, while Russell Frost watched her.

It was impossible for her to focus on reading.

"Sigh..." Jenna Axton closed her book with a sigh. He had her completely wrapped around his finger. "I’ll answer two of your questions. Think carefully about what you want to ask."

As for why two questions, perhaps it was simply because she liked the number two.

"I don’t need two. Just answer one question for me."

’You’re the one who turned it down,’ Jenna Axton thought.

’But this was so unlike the calculating Russell she knew.’

’He already knows about me and Luna... He’s not going to ask who her father is right off the bat, is he?’

With a pounding heart, Jenna Axton forced herself to look calm. "Go ahead."

"All these years living in Kensing... have you been happy?"

Jenna Axton frowned. ’This was his question?’

’What if I was happy? What if I wasn’t? So many years have passed. What’s the point of knowing now?’

"You said you only needed one question. Are you sure?" Jenna Axton reminded him how valuable that single question was.

Without a second thought, Russell Frost insisted, "This is the one."

"More happy than not." It was the truth. Because she had her precious daughter.

"But I... I haven’t been happy at all." Russell Frost’s tone suddenly shifted, and the usual calm in his eyes was gone.

Now, his eyes were like an uncharted sea, hiding a turbulent storm beneath their surface.

He said, "For all these years, I could never understand it. Why did you leave? Why did you disappear without a word?"

"I blamed myself, I was tormented by regret, I replayed it in my mind over and over again."

"Now, I have the answer."

His gaze turned sharp again, like a leopard stalking its prey.

Jenna Axton had never seen such a predatory look in his eyes. Frightened, she shrank further into the corner of the sofa.

But he didn’t move an inch. He remained seated, his eyes fixed on her as he spoke.

"You felt you were letting down Mom and Dad after they raised you. You felt that people with our kind of relationship shouldn’t have been intimate. You devalued my love for you with your own assumptions."

"It was all based on your own assumptions. You completely forgot what I told you. I told you to focus on growing up, and that I would wait for you. I told you to study hard and wait for me to come back on leave. And I told you that I would explain everything to Dad and make things right for you."

Russell Frost’s chest rose and fell with his agitated breaths. This was the most emotional she had ever seen him.

In her entire life, this was the first time Jenna Axton had seen her ’Second Brother’ so angry. He had always been gentle, his presence as comforting as a spring breeze.

"And what about you? You ran off, pregnant with my child. That’s theft, do you realize that?"

Under the weight of his accusations, the defensive walls Jenna Axton had painstakingly built collapsed.

"All you do is blame me! How was I supposed to face you? You were my brother, the one I grew up with! After I slept with you, what was I supposed to do? How could I ever face you again?"

"You slept with me?" A mocking glint appeared in his handsome eyes. "What makes you so sure I wasn’t just taking advantage of a situation I’d planned for all along?"

"You say one thing and do another! You’re a hypocrite! How was I supposed to know!" Jenna Axton was practically screaming. She’d had enough.

She knew deep down that he treated her differently, but she always convinced herself it was just her own crush making her see things, that she was reading too much into it and misinterpreting his intentions.

She was sick of her emotions constantly bouncing between love and hate. No matter how much she might have liked him in the past, she refused to get entangled with him emotionally ever again.

"So, I’ve changed. I’m telling you directly now: I love you. I’ve loved you ever since I first understood what it meant for a man to love a woman. Will you marry me?"

’Love.’

’Wait, isn’t this changing the subject way too fast? How am I supposed to respond to this?’

"I’ll give you ten minutes to consider."

Just as he said that, Russell Frost answered his phone. "Wait at the door. I’ll be right there."

The door slammed shut with a BANG.

As Russell Frost left, the dust stirred up by their argument began to settle.

’So what if he knows everything?’

’I’m not a little girl anymore. I won’t let my emotions control me ever again!’
