Wedding Night: My Disabled Husband Made Me Cry-Chapter 197: Secretly Pledged for Life
They both turned toward the door in unison and saw a meticulously dressed woman walk in.
"Auntie."
"Auntie."
The woman looked to be younger than forty. She wore a business suit, her hair was impeccably styled, and she exuded an air of sharp competence.
"Auntie, when did you get back?" Vincent Wentworth asked, getting to his feet.
"I just got here, and I already heard you two were arguing."
"We weren’t arguing, just discussing something."
"I know everything." Ruby Wentworth smiled, but her expression was detached. "Vincent, you can go. I’ll have a word with Shirley."
"Alright."
As soon as Vincent Wentworth left, Shirley Wentworth eagerly grabbed Ruby Wentworth’s hand. "Auntie, you’re finally back! Tell me what’s going on! Why isn’t Elle my child? Where did my baby with Jett go?!"
Ruby Wentworth sat down elegantly on the sofa. "Didn’t I make myself perfectly clear on the phone? It doesn’t matter whether Elle is your child or not. As long as everyone believes you gave birth to him and you can use him to marry Jett, that’s all that matters."
"You still haven’t answered my question directly," Shirley Wentworth said, her anxiety mounting. "Auntie, you’re the one in the family who dotes on me the most. Back when I was pregnant, I only told you. You helped me hide it from the family, and you were with me when I gave birth. You have to know what happened. I’m begging you, please tell me the truth."
Ruby Wentworth took her hand and said comfortingly, "Shirley, if your auntie knew what happened, wouldn’t I have told you? I was just as shocked when I heard about it. I’ve already had people start investigating secretly. But you know this can’t get out. If anyone finds out that Elle isn’t your biological son, your dream of marrying Jett will be shattered."
Shirley Wentworth frowned. "But you were so calm when I called you. I thought you already knew everything."
Ruby Wentworth smiled faintly. "Shirley, have you ever seen your auntie lose her composure?"
"That’s true. You’re always so calm and composed, and you can always think of a solution right away," Shirley Wentworth said apologetically. "Auntie, I was too frantic when I called you the other day. I said some things I shouldn’t have. I’m sorry."
"Silly girl, there’s no need for apologies between us. Right now, the most important thing is to resolve your current predicament."
Shirley Wentworth clung to her words as if they were a lifeline. "Auntie, I’m so glad you’re back. You have to help me!"
"Don’t worry. I wouldn’t have rushed back if it wasn’t to help you." Ruby Wentworth was as composed as ever. "Rest easy. I’ll go see Jett. I guarantee he won’t make things difficult for you."
"It’s more than that," Shirley Wentworth said. "Even though Elle isn’t my biological son, you’re right. As long as we keep this a secret and nobody finds out, he is my and Jett’s son. I have to keep Elle with me. He’s the bond that connects me to Jett."
"I know. I won’t let you lose this child."
...
It was Joy Chase’s first time at Sycamore Bay, and she was very nervous.
Especially while eating at the same table as Jett Sterling. She was so scared her hands were trembling.
"Joy, have some more," Vivian Quinn said, placing some food on her sister’s plate. "You don’t need to be nervous. Jett Sterling won’t bite."
"I’m not nervous..." Joy Chase murmured, her eyes downcast. "And I’m not afraid of my brother-in-law..."
"PFFT..." Ian Sterling burst out laughing. "You say you’re not afraid, but you’re probably scared out of your mind, right? You can blame my uncle for being so frosty. He’s not like me—people can’t help but want to get close to me the moment they see me."
Everyone: "..."
Vivian Quinn’s lip twitched. "Ian Sterling, you’re really something else. Putting down your uncle while simultaneously patting yourself on the back."
"I’m just speaking the truth."
Vivian Quinn couldn’t be bothered to engage with him and turned back to Joy Chase. "Joy, Jett Sterling just doesn’t smile much. You really don’t have to be scared."
After saying that, she shot Jett Sterling a meaningful look.
Jett Sterling hadn’t planned on getting involved, but Joy Chase’s earlier "brother-in-law" had undeniably pleased him. Finding himself in a good mood, he made a rare comment. "You’ve been in the hospital for a long time, so it’s normal for your social skills to be a little weak. Just take your time getting used to things. This is your sister’s home; you don’t need to be so formal."
Joy Chase was both surprised and flattered, but still didn’t dare to speak loudly. "Th-Thank you, brother-in-law."
After dinner, Vivian Quinn took Joy Chase and Elle for a walk in the garden.
Over half an hour later, Nanny Jenner brought out a wrap. "Ma’am, it gets chilly at night. You should put this on."
"Thank you." Vivian Quinn draped the wrap over her shoulders and asked, "I think I saw the light on in the tea room. Did Ian Sterling go in for some tea?"
"No, we have a guest."
"Who is it?"
"Someone from the Wentworth Family."
"Is it Shirley Wentworth, here to see Elle?"
"No, it’s Shirley Wentworth’s aunt, Ruby Wentworth."
Vivian Quinn didn’t know her. "Is she here to see Jett?"
"Yes."
"I see."
Vivian Quinn didn’t ask any more questions. She continued walking hand-in-hand with Elle, only heading back inside after they had gotten enough exercise.
The door to the tea room opened, and a woman walked out.
Elle greeted her politely, "Great-Aunt."
"Good boy, Elle," Ruby Wentworth said with a smile. "I brought you a gift. Don’t forget to open it."
"Thank you, Great-Aunt."
Ruby Wentworth raised her gaze to Vivian Quinn. "You must be Mrs. Sterling. Jett is a lucky man to have married such a beautiful and classy young woman."
Vivian Quinn gave a polite nod. "Thank you."
"It’s getting late, so I won’t impose any longer. I’ll have to invite you for tea some other time, Mrs. Sterling."
"Of course. Take care."
Jett Sterling came out of the tea room and walked over to Vivian Quinn. "Done with your walk?"
"Mhm. Elle and I got our ten thousand steps in. Goal achieved."
"Good."
Vivian couldn’t contain her curiosity. That night, after Jett Sterling finished his shower and came out, she couldn’t help but ask, "Shirley Wentworth’s aunt is very impressive. Is she a career woman?"
"She’s a well-known lawyer in her field. She also manages a portion of the Wentworth Group’s assets. She juggles multiple roles but handles both effortlessly."
"That’s incredible. No wonder she has such a powerful presence. She seems like one of those untouchable, high-powered career women. Is she able to balance a family life as well?"
"She’s unmarried." Jett Sterling brought up the past. "When they were young, she and my younger uncle fell in love and secretly promised to marry. But their families found out. There’s a long-standing feud between our families, so they weren’t allowed to be together and were forced to separate."
"That’s such a shame..." Vivian Quinn lamented. "And what about your uncle?"
"My grandfather had two sons, and both had a hereditary illness. After my uncle was forced to separate from Ruby Wentworth, he fell into a deep depression. He passed away less than two years later. He was only twenty-five when he died."
"How could that happen..."
Jett Sterling held her close. "I heard that after my uncle died, Ruby Wentworth fell gravely ill. After she recovered, the Wentworth Family tried to set her up with suitors, wanting her to get married. Guess what she did."
