Chapter 54: The Oddballs

Vestra Le Fay, or Vestra to her friends which was... No one, let out a deep sigh as she looked around the area just outside the ’Trail of the Gatekeeper’, which was surrounded by players as they barked what they needed to fill groups.

Vestra was a shorter girl, standing only around 4’9, but had an adorable face that made her seem like some kind of doll that had come to life. The long robe that she wore, like many mage class players, didn’t do much for her as it hung loose off of her body. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Her hair was smokey grey, in more ways than one, as it cascaded down her shoulders and then literally turned into smoke, or mist to be more accurate. In different places her hair morphed into his mist, which curled into the air before dispersing.

With hair like that, pale skin and enchanting purple eyes, she was a girl that naturally stood out. Many other players often found themselves staring at her in awe. Even if they were game characters, beauty was still something that made many drop their guards and gawk. However, whenever they did stare, it was not Vestra that chastised them, but their own friends.

They shook their friends from their stupor and quickly whispered in their ears before they got any terrible ideas. Just from that whisper alone, all of those players who had been enchanted by her ethereal and otherworldly beauty suddenly looked at her in disgust.

That shouldn’t have bothered her. She was used to such looks. But half the point of entering this game was to escape looks like that, and yet here they were. Just like real life.

She let out another sigh at the misery of life, before spotting another player who everyone was also keeping their distance from, which was particularly strange considering how well equipped this player seemed to be.

The player was another woman with seductive, yet dangerous features. Her armour was pure black leather which only had its colour broken up by tufts of pure white fur lining the edges of her bracers, boots and the collar of her armour.

Not only did it look amazingly comfortable, but it looked expensive and typical of a higher level player. Perhaps someone that was staying behind to carry others through the dungeon, or someone who belonged to a strong guild.

But if that was the case, why was she being avoided like the plague? All she was doing was sitting there, writing in a book and keeping to herself. If this was a romance film, this was when the cheesy male lead would go over and drop a line on the ’beautiful but doesn’t know it’ nerdy girl.

Not that she watched such terrible movies! Definitely not...

Letting out a deep sigh, not of anxiety but of resignation and depressed expectation of what she knew was about to come next, Vestra walked over to the strange girl and cleared her throat.

"Excuse me Miss, But I was wondering if you could attack me please."

Belladonna blinked softly in confusion, lifting her head slowly before staring at Vestra blankly. Vestra tried her best to keep her face straight, but she was already preparing herself for what came next.

The strange looks like she was crazy, then they would ask about her class and the disgust would take over.

"Okay, Sure. Do you want it somewhere specific or just anywhere?"

"Yeah... I thought so. I just needed to ask for my class and... Wait, what did you say?" Valerie paused in her routine explanation, staring at Belladonna as if she was the crazy one.

"I said I’d do it. I mean I assumed you had a good reason for it, and if its for your class I don’t see why I shouldn’t help." Belladonna said with a soft smile, snapping her book closed and hopping to her feet.

She stepped back into a casual fighting stance with her hands raised. Not taking it overly seriously, just still ready to lash out at full force if it was a trick.

"Oh right... Of course. Why wouldn’t you..." Vestra muttered with a half present voice, still trying to process the strangeness of it all. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. But it was... so she should really be taking advantage of it while it lasted instead of standing around like an idiot, looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Shaking her head, Vestra focused as she stood with her arms spread, puffing out her chest.

"Just attack my chest... All I ask is that you don’t tell me when you do it. My class requires that it feels as close to a real battle as poss-" Her sentence cut out, replaced with a struggling wheeze as Belladonna’s fist slammed into her chest.

Her ribs cracked and the air was forced from her lungs, before they spasmed and struggled to draw in a fresh breath. Vestra staggered back, clutching at her chest before coughing heavily, panting with shallow and panicked breaths as pain erupted through her body with every breath.

"T-thank you..." She wheezed out with a wince. From her sleeve, she produced a wooden wand tipped with a tiny white crystal no bigger than her pinkies fingernail, but she didn’t use it straight away.

Under Belladonna’s curious eye, Vestra struggled through the flashes of pain with a deep, studious focus. Every quivering breath, every flinch from her cracked ribs and every ounce of pain.

She committed them all, and more, to memory. Remembering not just the aftermath and pain, but what the punch felt like in the moment of impact.

Only once it all was committed to memory, down to the smallest bruise, did Vestra finally use her wand and cast her spell. She didn’t mutter any words, simply tapped the wand against her chest as it cast a soft white glow.

Then, in an instant, her injuries vanished as if they were just an illusion.

She clambered to her feet and, with a steeled resolve, looked Belladonna in her eyes as she said,

"Thank you. Now, I need you to do my head next. I’ll let you choose exactly where."

Belladonna smirked, letting out a soft chuckle as she cracked her knuckles,

"Fine by me. Although I might need a little bit of an explanation after this."

Yet even as she said that, her fist was already sailing towards the adorable girls gorgeous face, as others looked on in horror.
