Chapter 15: She’s at home alone, come over by yourself

Wang Jian walked toward the village committee, naturally spotting the two figures at the entrance. He could clearly make out the expressions on their faces.

Li Dayu had also just put two and two together. He turned to Zhang Quan and said, "I get it now, Lao Zhang. You’re a sly one. You knew all along that Wang Jian had connections with the Cai Family, but you didn’t tell me. You must have done it on purpose. If you’d told me sooner, you wouldn’t have had to pay for the clinic." As he spoke, Li Dayu took out his phone and transferred back the money he had received the previous day.

Zhang Quan opened his mouth to explain, but Li Dayu had already made up his mind and wouldn’t give him the chance. Instead, he ran out excitedly to greet Wang Jian. Zhang Quan muttered under his breath, "That damn opportunist..." Despite his words, the way he looked at Wang Jian had clearly changed.

"Oh, Xiao Jian! That was..." Li Dayu was practically vibrating with excitement. In his eyes, Wang Jian was a golden goose, and his fawning expression was impossible to hide. "That was Mr. Cai Wenji from the Cai Group, right?"

Wang Jian nodded. He wasn’t surprised Cai Wenji had been recognized. Many people from their village went to the city to sell medicinal herbs, so it was hardly strange that they knew him.

When Wang Jian confirmed it, Li Dayu drew a sharp breath. "And... and the old gentleman who was laughing and talking with you earlier... he couldn’t be... the Chairman of the Cai Group, could he?" After asking, Li Dayu swallowed hard. The moment the guess formed in his mind, he could hardly believe it himself. But who else could make Cai Wenji stand so obediently outside the car? He couldn’t think of anyone else.

"Yes," Wang Jian replied, his sarcasm undisguised. "The village chief has excellent eyesight, seeing so clearly from over a hundred meters away. Much better than mine."

Li Dayu, of course, heard the mockery in his tone, but could he make a big deal out of it? Certainly not. He grabbed Wang Jian and began pulling him toward the village committee office, laughing heartily. "Hahaha, come on, let’s go! I’ve got all the materials for the clinic ready. We were just waiting for you! It’s not right for you to be standing out here." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Zhang Quan and Wang Jian exchanged a speechless glance. It was no wonder Li Dayu had managed to run the village so successfully. Wang Jian had to admit he was no match for the man. He obediently followed the village chief into the committee office.

In the office was a familiar figure: the widow of Mr. Niu from next door. Besides the widow, no one else was there. As soon as Li Dayu entered, he called out, "Xiao Li! Hurry and bring out that document I mentioned last night. And get a black pen and the ink pad ready. The man of the hour is here! Once we get this signed, the matter will be settled." He added, "Oh, and pour a cup of tea." After giving his orders, Li Dayu immediately turned and beckoned for Wang Jian to sit. To an outsider, he was acting as if the town mayor had arrived. Yang Rong was utterly dumbfounded. She only moved after Li Dayu chided her again, and when she looked back at Wang Jian, her gaze had changed completely.

Working at the village committee, Yang Rong was always dressed in professional attire and wore makeup, making her a striking sight. Her black stockings were indeed a perfect match for the outfit. Even Wang Jian couldn’t help but take a few extra glances. Zhang Quan also peeked and mumbled something. The words "shameless hussy" were faintly audible. Wang Jian almost burst out laughing, but Li Dayu’s expression remained completely impassive, earning an internal nod of approval. Of course, based on what he had seen over the past two days, Wang Jian had already started to suspect that this widow, Yang Rong, might be involved with Li Dayu. If that’s true, I really should tell Liu Zi and the Li Family what a tangled web they all weave.

"Come, come, have some tea first."

The mountain folk loved their hot tea, and Wang Jian didn’t refuse. A single mouthful sent a wave of heat through him. He let out a long, satisfied breath, feeling absolutely refreshed. Seeing his expression, Li Dayu laughed. "Xiao Jian, you probably don’t get to drink tea like this much in the Capital City, right? This is all handmade from around here, not something you can get just anywhere. It’s not bad, is it?"

Wang Jian nodded repeatedly. "It’s good stuff. The flavor lingers. It feels like it clears out your whole system."

"Hahahaha," Zhang Quan also laughed. "Drinking it often is good for your health, too. I think when Xiao Jian opens his clinic, he should keep some on hand. What do you think, Village Chief?"

Li Dayu shot Zhang Quan a glare. The man was clearly just trying to score points for Wang Jian. Still, he didn’t refuse. "Lao Zhang has a point. When the clinic gets busy, you can have someone prepare some tea. With Xiao Jian’s skills, people from other villages might even travel here for treatment. That would be a big deal."

"You’re too kind, Village Chief!" Wang Jian demurred. He was confident enough in his skills, but he knew Li Dayu was just spouting flattery. Anyone could say nice things.

Li Dayu waved his hand generously. "Xiao Li, bring two tea cakes over for Xiao Jian. When the clinic next door opens, you’ll need to help out more, you hear?" As he said this, Li Dayu suddenly recalled the look in Wang Jian’s eyes and quickly added, "Xiao Jian, I just had a thought. Once the clinic is open, you’ll get more and more patients. There are a lot of people in the surrounding ten-mile radius. When it gets busy, you’ll have trouble managing on your own. Wouldn’t it be better to hire a nurse?"

Wang Jian mulled it over. He wasn’t in a hurry at first, but if things really did get busy, he wouldn’t be able to handle it alone, not to mention he would also have to make house calls.

Seeing his interest was piqued, Li Dayu immediately said, "Take a look at Xiao Li here."

Wang Jian and Zhang Quan followed his gaze. Short skirt, black stockings... and is that a hint of white underwear with a Mickey Mouse on it? She’s attractive, but so what? He gave Li Dayu a strange look, waiting for him to continue.

"Before Xiao Li married into our village, she studied at a vocational medical school. She’d have no problem being a nurse. It’s usually quiet at the village committee office anyway. I think it would work out well to have Xiao Li go over and help you. What do you think?"

The moment Li Dayu said this, even Zhang Quan and Yang Rong stared at him.

Well, I’ll be damned. Zhang Quan was truly astonished. Wang Jian might not get it, but Zhang Quan and Yang Rong knew perfectly well. Over the years, Li Dayu’s success in attracting business and investments had been, in no small part, thanks to Yang Rong’s "help." And now he was just going to send her over to work for Wang Jian?

Unlike Zhang Quan, Yang Rong, as the person in question, read much more into it. There was only one reason Li Dayu would do this: in his mind, Wang Jian’s value was far greater than that of those other businessmen. At this thought, her eyes lit up. They narrowed slightly with a smile playing on her lips. As she looked at Wang Jian, her gaze practically glowed. She even shifted her posture, re-crossing her legs and aiming the Mickey Mouse design squarely in his direction.

Good grief! Wang Jian wanted to say something, but Li Dayu and Yang Rong kept drawing his attention back to her. He saw the widow’s entire transformation unfold. The wave of flirtatiousness that hit him was so intense it almost made him stand at attention.

Fortunately, Wang Jian had no interest in this kind of "public transport." Forcing himself to remain calm, he sat up straight. "Village Chief, you’re too kind. The clinic has just opened, so let’s forget about a nurse for now. When I need one later, I’ll let you know."

He had already made up his mind. His clinic was his most important project, and he couldn’t let people like Yang Rong and Li Dayu meddle with it. If he really needed a nurse, he would find one himself later. Still, Yang Rong was undeniably a knockout. She had a voluptuous figure, long legs, and a seductive gaze. A woman of her caliber was a rare sight, and Wang Jian would be lying if he said he wasn’t stirred. It was a pity that after personally witnessing how Liu Zi had "played" with her, he couldn’t muster an ounce of interest.

"Here, here. Just sign these documents, Xiao Jian, and the property next door is yours to use as your clinic. You can decorate and fix it up however you like..." Li Dayu smiled and added, "You don’t even have to make it a clinic if you don’t want to."

Wang Jian thanked him profusely. This particular worry was finally settled. After returning to his hometown, he at last had a proper venture to pursue. Once everything was concluded, Zhang Quan and Wang Jian took their leave.

On the way back, Zhang Quan seemed to have something on his mind.

He didn’t speak until they reached his front door. "Xiao Jian, I see you seem to like that widow Yang, but I have to warn you. You can’t touch that widow. She’s bad luck."

At this, Zhang Quan’s voice dropped. He glanced around to make sure no one was listening before whispering, "If you really can’t hold it in... my daughter-in-law is a real beauty, you know. Isn’t that better than a widow?"

"Just hold on for a couple of days. Zhang Li and I are going on a long trip. She’ll be home alone... you just come on over, understand?"
