Venerable Demon King & The Doting Immortal (QT)-Chapter 162: Where is your girlfriend?
Chapter 162: Where is your girlfriend?
Two generations ago, the heads of the clans agreed that the main family homes were off-limits, like embassies on diplomatic soil. If an offence is committed, the Dragon Head has to give permission to enter after agreeing with the other clan heads that a rule has been broken.
Han Xin’s brow creased in irritation as he watched Han Zhan bite into the peach again, the juice dripping messily. He stood up, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket and tossing it to him. "Why do you eat like a child?"
Han Zhan caught the handkerchief, laughing. "Is it my fault you bought juicy peaches?"
Han Xin sat down opposite him, his gaze stern. "Shut up."
Han Zhan wiped his chin, still grinning. "Where’s your girlfriend? She’s always following you around like a tail."
Han Xin’s face darkened at the mention of Peng Xiu, who was often by his side. "Don’t talk nonsense."
Han Zhan laughed harder, finding Han Xin’s reaction amusing. "Okay, okay, cousin. She’s not your girlfriend."
The atmosphere in the office suddenly turned serious, the playful banter evaporating like mist. Han Zhan wiped his chin and neck with the handkerchief, his expression shifting to one of concern. "I knew something was up with the Die clan, but I didn’t think they were this vile. Old Die is stuck in the old ways; he can’t just make money honestly, tsk."
Han Xin remained silent, his gaze distant as though lost in thought. He had always harboured a sneaky suspicion that something was amiss, but he couldn’t just walk through the doors of their nightclub to investigate. Now, with the women they had trafficked intercepted and the police involved, the truth was laid bare before them.
"Did you get the surveillance from the scene?" Han Xin finally asked, his voice steady.
Han Zhan shook his head. "The place is swimming with cops, but I had someone hack into the port security cameras. The Die goons were receiving the shipment, and they had all the cameras playing looped footage. There is nothing."
Han Xin wasn’t surprised. The Die clan was terrified that the other clans would discover their illicit activities, so of course, they tampered with the security cameras. He looked at the estimated time of the incident, noting the lack of traffic. "Have them check all the cars that were around that area at that time."
Han Zhan nodded. "They did, but the only cars that entered the port were the Die Clans."
"Then check the car registration numbers for any vehicle that was around the area. The people who did this couldn’t have walked there," Han Xin instructed.
Han Zhan agreed, nodding as he picked up his phone to type a message. Suddenly, Han Xin’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, his brow furrowing at the sight of an encrypted file sent by his informant in the police. "Maybe there might be no need after all," he said, getting up and opening his laptop as he sat down at the desk.
Han Zhan walked over, curiosity piqued. "What do you mean?"
Han Xin’s fingers flew over the keyboard, decrypting the file. "This might have the answers we need," he murmured, his eyes narrowing as the contents of the file began to unfold on the screen.
Han Xin decrypted the file and opened it, revealing the contents of the investigation at the port. Pictures and detailed reports filled the screen. Han Zhan leaned in, his eyes narrowing as he took a closer look. At a glance, it was clear this was a professional hit. Han Xin’s eyes skimmed over the word "one suspect," and a flash of understanding crossed his face. As powerful as the Die clan was, he had assumed it was a group of men who had opened fire. But the report suggested otherwise. It was a single shooter, positioned atop a pile of shipping containers. There were no shell casings found, but the container had been riddled with bullets, indicating the Die clan goons had fired back.
Han Xin swiped through the pictures, his expression growing darker with each one. The Die clan’s actions were inexcusable, but a rogue vigilante targeting the Triads was unacceptable. This reckless individual could turn their sights on another clan next. It was the Triads’ responsibility to deal with the Die clan, not an outsider’s.
Han Zhan whistled softly, impressed by the ruthlessness captured in the images. "This guy is good. We need to poach him."
Han Xin sneered. "They might pull the trigger first before you can even make an offer."
Han Zhan straightened, sliding his hands into his pants pockets. "I will get someone to look through all the traffic cameras around the area and check the car registrations like you said."
"And get me a witness. I need to question them myself," Han Xin added.
Han Zhan hesitated. "That will be a little difficult since they are in police custody, but give me twenty-four hours and I will make it happen."
Han Xin was about to say he only had twelve hours when a soft knock interrupted them. A head peeked in, it was Peng Xiu.
Han Zhan grinned. "Ah, it’s sister-in-law," he teased.
Han Xin’s glare shot at him could have frozen fire. Han Zhan felt his scalp prickle under the intensity of that stare. If looks could kill he would have been in a coffin already. "I am just kidding, cousin," he said with a burst of nervous laughter.
Peng Xiu lowered her head shyly as she entered the office. Han Zhan, sensing the tension, decided to make a quick exit. "I will leave you two. You two kids don’t stay up late and don’t overdo it," he said, heading for the door.
Han Xin picked up a fountain pen from his desk and flung it at Han Zhan like a dagger. Han Zhan noticed just in time, ducking out and shutting the door behind him. The pen hit the closed door with a loud bang.
Peng Xiu stood awkwardly, her eyes darting between Han Xin and the door. Han Xin sighed, rubbing his temples. "What is it, Peng Xiu?"
She stepped forward, her voice barely above a whisper. "I heard about the Die clan, so I came to see you. You left me behind at the private club so... I came to see if you need my help."
