Urban System in America-Chapter 45 - 44: SHIT! CLEMENT IS BACK
Chapter 45: Chapter 44: SHIT! CLEMENT IS BACK
A message from Adrian popped up on the screen.
"Someone’s here."
—
Outside, Adrian was leaning against a tree, pretending to scroll through his phone, but his attention was entirely on the road leading to the entrance.
He was trying to look relaxed and natural. Minutes passed in silence.
Too quiet—
Every rustle made him flinch.
Every distant voice made his pulse spike.
Then suddenly, his eyes caught a movement.
From across the lawn, a janitor was coming toward the building.
The man approached with a mop and bucket, humming as he walked.
Seeing this, Adrian’s blood ran cold, and sweat poured like a waterfall.
The man was heading straight for the building.
Adrian pulled out his phone and typed quickly.
"Someone’s here.
A janitor is coming our way."
—
Inside, Rex’s breath hitched, and his body stiffened.
He hadn’t even started the transfer yet.
Now he was in a dilemma, his hands hovering over the keyboard, his eyes locked on the content on the screen.
If he started now, he had to at least finish the processing stage.
Pulling the drive mid-process would corrupt the data.
All the evidence, all their effort, gone in seconds.
He didn’t think he’d always be this lucky or get chances like this again.
"Damn it."
So, he gritted his teeth and launched the tool directly.
His custom data extraction tool began scanning folders and transferring selected files to a secure cloud location.
"Processing: 1%... 2%..."
He exhaled deeply as he sat down.
"At least get the evidence first. If we’re caught, we’re caught. We’ll see what happens later," he muttered with determination.
—
Outside, Adrian’s heart was about to burst from his chest.
He kept checking his phone for any response while constantly turning to look at the janitor, who was steadily approaching.
Seeing that there was no response, he gritted his teeth, his mind overloading as he frantically searched for a solution, anything. Should he distract the guy? Block the door? Knock him out?
The janitor came closer and closer to the main entrance.
Just when Adrian was about to step forward with determination burning in his eyes—
The janitor reached the entrance and suddenly glanced around.
He stood there, pulled out his phone, and looked around suspiciously.
But strangely, he didn’t enter the building. He just stood there, as if waiting for something.
Seeing this, Adrian also stopped in his tracks and looked at him with curiosity and confusion.
And just like that, they both waited in strange silence.
After about a minute, suddenly the door opened, and a figure stepped outside.
It was a woman, wearing the same janitor’s uniform as the man before.
She stepped outside and looked around carefully.
As if searching for something suspicious. Not spotting anyone, she visibly relaxed.
They exchanged furtive glances.
Adrian continued watching with his heart in his throat. Judging by their age, they should be married, but judging by their suspicious behavior, they definitely weren’t married to each other.
More like... having an affair.
Then, right before Adrian’s stunned eyes, the male janitor suddenly stepped forward and pulled the woman into his arms.
And then... they started kissing madly.
Long. Messy. Almost desperate.
Adrian’s jaw dropped open so wide you could have fit a whole apple in his mouth.
"What the hell!?"
"Damn dogs. Dogs in heat."
He cursed madly in his heart.
He almost choked from being caught between fear and frustration.
But thankfully, after a few stolen moments, they both left. Probably continuing their tryst somewhere else.
Adrian slumped down, sweat still dripping from his temples. He caught his breath and shook off the tension.
Breathing heavily, he composed himself. Now wasn’t the time for this.
He quickly picked up his phone and messaged Rex:
"All clear. They’ve left."
—
Back in the office, seeing the phone light up, Rex hurriedly checked it.
Reading the text, he breathed a sigh of relief. His shoulders visibly relaxed.
He turned his attention back to the laptop screen. The processing was almost finished, and the data extraction tool had also been installed without leaving a trace.
Now all that was left was to transfer the data to his cloud server.
With a click, he initiated the process.
"Transferring: 1%... 2%... 3%..."
The screen flickered as the program began its silent operation, extracting files and transferring them to secure cloud storage.
The loading bar crawled forward agonizingly slowly.
His fingers drummed against the desk as he kept his ears sharp.
Every second felt stretched, the tension in the air suffocating.
Just when he thought everything would go smoothly—
A message from Adrian made him shoot upright.
"SHIT! CLEMENT IS BACK"
—
Outside, after watching the janitors leave, Adrian had cursed them wildly but still breathed a long sigh of relief.
But just as he relaxed, from the corner of his eye, he saw something.
Something that made all the color drain from his face.
Professor Clement... P-Professor Clement was coming toward the building.
So, he quickly informed Rex and remained hidden, watching anxiously.
He didn’t know whether he should stop him or not.
So, he asked Rex:
"Should I stop him?"
—
Inside, Rex glanced at the laptop screen anxiously.
"86%... 87%... 88%..."
Looking at Adrian’s message, he hesitated for a second, then responded.
"No, don’t. I’m almost done here. Just wait there and don’t let him find you."
Seeing this, Adrian stopped and crouched down, keeping his eyes on Clement.
He watched, helpless, as the professor stepped inside the building.
He quickly sent another message:
"He is already inside the building."
—
Inside the office, Rex didn’t respond.
His eyes were glued to the screen.
"Transfer Progress: 91%... 92%... 93%..."
Seconds ticked by.
Suddenly, he heard footsteps in the hallway outside.
"Thuk... thuk"
His heart pounded madly against his chest.
As he stared anxiously at the screen, breathing fast but low.
The footsteps grew louder.
Outside, Adrian anxiously paced back and forth, like an ant on a hot stove.
Inside the office, Rex’s eyes flew to the progress bar.
"98%"
He muttered under his breath.
"Come on... come on..."
Suddenly, the doorknob rattled.
Rex froze.
He turned toward the door, blood draining from his face, breath caught in his throat.
