Chapter 23 - 23: The Unexpected Encounter

Rex was lost in the joy of reading, completely unaware that someone had quietly entered the box.

The person who entered paused, surprised to find someone already inside.

She looked at Rex curiously. Her first instinct was to ask him to leave, as most students knew this was her favorite spot.

But the sight of Rex, his sharp features softened by a pair of reading glasses, absorbed in a book, made her hesitate.

His handsome appearance, especially with the glasses, gave her a very refined impression. Seeing him so engrossed in reading, she couldn't bring herself to disturb him.

Uncharacteristically, she took a seat across from him, her own book open but her eyes occasionally drifting to the quietly focused stranger.

But seeing him so focused, she also felt motivated. So, she focused her attention back on her book and began reading it with gusto.

Outside, a group of boys peeked toward the box with a mix of curiosity and mischief, with their ears perked up. They were eagerly awaiting Rex's reaction upon facing the "true owner of the box."

"Hey, hey, what do you think his reaction will be when he sees her?" a boy whispered grinning, his eyes glued to the box.

"I bet he'll rush out in 20 seconds," another replied confidently.

"Twenty seconds!? I bet he'll be running out in at most 10 seconds," a third chimed in.

Their heated discussion was abruptly interrupted—

"Ahem!"

A stern reprimanding cough brought them back to reality. They fearfully turned toward the sound and met the disapproving eyes of the librarian standing near them.

Immediately, they shut their mouths and lowered their heads. After realizing the librarian didn't intend to say more, they collectively sighed in relief and turned their attention back to the closed box.

Minutes ticked by.

Strangely, even after all this time, there was no sign of Rex coming out. They exchanged puzzled glances, each more bewildered than the last.

"Hey, what's going on? Why hasn't he come out yet?" a boy with an oily face whispered, keeping his head down.

"How would I know? Logically, he should've been running out all flustered by now," the boy with a middle-part hairstyle shrugged.

"This doesn't make sense." a guy muttered; his forehead wrinkled.

They knew the girl inside the box was one of the university's genuine school flowers. She is known for her aloofness, usually very reserved and unapproachable, she never spared a glance at the boys, let alone sat with them to read.

This box usually remained empty despite the library being jam packed all because it was her favorite spot. Whenever she came, she would always sit there.

Her intimidating aura and past incidents ensured most boys kept their distance. If anyone still dared to sit there, she would "politely" ask them to leave.

And girls? No sane girl would willingly sit with her to avoid unwanted comparisons.

Rumors about her background had always been a hot topic among students.

Many believed she came from a wealthy, powerful family as evident from her refined clothing and elegant manners.

Numerous boys had fallen head over heels for her beauty, and a few brave souls had even dared to confess their feelings, and without exception all they got was cold rejection and public humiliation.

In her first year, a rich second-generation playboy being dismissive arrogantly proposed to her.

And after being rejected he got angry and tried to force her to become his girlfriend, just like he previously did with other girls.

And even arrogantly declared that she was his woman from now on.

But the very next day, he showed up at the university on crutches, his face bruised black and blue, his hand and leg broken, and he publicly apologized while begging for forgiveness.

Crying and howling to let him go.

But from beginning to end, she never appeared in front of him.

And strangely, after that day, the boy was never seen at the university again.

There was truly a wild west of rumors back then.

Some claimed his family went bankrupt, others said he was expelled, and the most outrageous ones speculated that his body was thrown into the Pacific Ocean.

Nobody knew the truth, but no one dared to provoke her after that.

By all logic, Rex should have been running out of the box by now. Yet, even after several minutes, there was no sign of him. Shocked and confused, the students eventually returned to their studies but occasionally their eyes darted back to the box.

Just like that time continued to pass like an endless river, with no beginning or end in sight.

In the box.

After finally reading the last page, Rex stretched out his sore body with satisfaction. Just then, he was stunned to notice someone sitting opposite him.

Most accurately an absurdly beautiful girl was sitting there with a few messy strands of hairs falling on her face.

Her striking phoenix eyes were focused on her book, Her skin exceptionally fair, almost like a porcelain, and flawlessly clear. It seems to possess a subtle, cool luminosity.

Long, flowing dark hair, the color of polished obsidian, cascades down her back.

They were obviously meticulously maintained and possessed a silken sheen.

Her facial features are delicate yet defined, with high cheekbones, a sharp jawline, and a perfectly sculpted nose.

Everything seems to be just perfect without any flaw.

A subtle, ethereal fragrance lingered in the air—notes of rare iris, sandalwood, and a hint of cold, crystalline musk. It wasn't floral or sweet, but an expensive, sophisticated scent that matched her refined appearance.

Her tailored navy-blue blouse, sleek trousers, and minimalist diamond necklace added to her elegant, ethereal charm.

The golden light fell gently on her, enhancing her otherworldly beauty—something so sacred and captivating that words could hardly capture it.

Rex blinked, momentarily stunned. Reflexively, he pulled out his phone and snapped a photo, the faint shutter sound breaking the stillness. Realizing what he had done, he panicked and angled his phone toward the window, pretending to capture the sunset.

At that moment, the girl also snapped out of her focus, lifting her gaze lazily toward him. Her amethyst eyes—deep, vibrant, and mesmerizing—seemed to hold a captivating intensity.

Rex found himself momentarily lost in those eyes, who would have thought that someone this beautiful could exist in this world, especially those eyes they could easily cause the fall of empires.

Unbeknownst to him, the girl was equally stunned by his appearance. His ocean-blue eyes, fair skin, dark obsidian hair, and well-defined features, coupled with the refined aura his glasses gave him, made for an unforgettable sight.

However, her strong mental fortitude helped her maintain composure, and she gently tapped the table, bringing Rex out of his daze.

Realizing he had been staring, he quickly turned his gaze to the window, where his camera still pointed.

"I-I was taking a picture of the beautiful sunset outside. Look, it's so lovely from here," he stammered, hastily explained while gesturing weakly at the window.

Hearing this, she also glanced outside and softly nodded, a simple "Uhmm" escaping her lips, a nearly imperceptible acknowledgment, before returning to her book.

Rex exhaled quietly, half-relieved, half-embarrassed, and turned to look at the scene outside.

From the library's window, the sunset unfolded like a living painting. The sky blazed with hues of amber, crimson, and lavender, each shade melting into the next.

The sun rested low, casting a golden glow over the campus rooftops and swaying treetops.

Golden sunlight poured through the glass, creating long, warm shadows—a beautiful, ephemeral scene, something no human could ever hope to Capture on canvas.
