Uprising: My Life in a Video Game-Chapter 23 - : Uncanny
Chapter 23 - 23: Uncanny
In a garage, a lady is seen walking on some car parts. She's dressed in sturdy, grease-streaked coveralls, the kind with multiple pockets for tools and small parts. It is a vibrant navy blue, now bear the marks of countless hours in the garage. Underneath she wears a fitted, short-sleeved t-shirt.
She had her long hair tied into a bun and kept under a baseball cap.
She wipes off the sweat on her forehead and frowned.
"Kenny, where is the size 12 spanner." she shouted while walking to a huge freezer that looked a little out of place in the garage.

The dimly lit garage with concrete floors that bear he telltale stains of oil drips and years of use. Old tools hang haphazardly on pegboards, and dusty cardboard boxes. Cobwebs cling to the corners, and the air smells faintly of motor oil and damp earth.
"Kenny, I'm talking to you!" she shouted while taking a bottle of water.
The freezer were packed to the brief with food, water and junks that could last one for 5 days.
"I know you heard me, Kenny. Bring that spanner or I will turn you into one right now. You ungrateful son of a gun." she shouted with a raise of an eyebrow.
Tap! Tap!
She heard footsteps coming down the stairs. The garage was not separated from the house and was just like a basement to the main house, but it had a garage door leading to outside and has much larger room.
The footsteps stopped at a steel like door that allows entrance from people upstairs to the garage.
"I'm coming, woman!" a voiced shouted back, presumably Kenny.
Clink- Clink!
A sound of keys jingled from the door. A loud thud came and the door opened.
He locked the door behind him, then kept the keys in his pocket, barely fitting in.
He tossed over a spanner towards her side. She caught it, gave him a hard look and continued. She opened the bonnet and started fiddling with some things.
It was a old Toyota Corolla probably a 90's model. It looked so beat down and thrashed, like it had had much accidents or as broken down a lot.
"When will you get over with this strange obsession? Look at this place just junks and chunks." Kenny said with his eyebrows up.
"Not an obsession it's a..."
"Habit. I get, you've said that like a thousand time also. I mean, you can be employed into a business consulting agency for motors, I mean you have a PhD in..."
"I don't want to have this conversation with you again. Leave me to my devices." she said getting on a creeper and sliding under the car.
"May, I can't watch you waste your life away because of some boy. Do you want to end up like your mom?" he shouted at her direction.
Silence.
"I'm sorry I shouldn't have-" Kenny realized it spoke out of line.
"Get out!" she said with a low voice. Her eyes darkening under the car. She gripped the spanner harder.
"May, just stop. Even though it is a little rest it won't hurt. Aren't you tired of this? Just go on a vacation or something?" Kenny said feeling a bit frustrated. Seven years of being with this girl and he still doesn't understand her.
"A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man." she said making a thudding sound with her spanner to remind him of a initial request.
"Alright, I will go but-" something caught his eyes as he was about to speak. He saw a silhouette moving towards the garage from very far off.
Gradually it became more visible but it was not clear to make out.
"What's up?" May asked sliding out from under the car. She noticed Kenny was looking at something. Tracing his gaze he saw a figure running towards the garage door from straight ahead.
"T-that's J-Jacob." her eyes widen in surprise. But he didn't look like himself. He was drooling from his mouth, his skin was dry and grey. He was covered in blood and ran with a dead white look in his eyes.
Tears welled up in her eyes. She ran towards the garage door trying to run out to meet him.
"Shut the door!" she said blankly.
"W-Why?" Kenny said in a shaky voice. Fear filled his eyes freezing him in place. Whatever or whoever that is, it wasn't human, at least not anymore.
"Close the ******* door!" she shouted.
Snapping out of his daze, he took the keys in his pocket. He scrambled through them looking for the garage keys.
The figure was getting closer and closer and reached the garage door.
"Idiot." she snatched the keys from him and and threw it straight at the figure, slowing it down.
She jumped up and slammed the garage door straight too the ground and slammed the padlocks on.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
A sound of metal hitting skull or bone resounded non-stop.
