Universal Power System-Chapter 364: A Gift For Nathan
Chapter 364: A Gift For Nathan
Over time, Nathan and Mako fostered a unique kind of friendship. Although they were still hesitant and cautious toward each other, they had enough respect for each other to listen and share information that was critical to them.
Ever since Mako had revealed his Rage Mode as his quirk to Nathan, he felt a bit at ease to be around another person who knew what he was going through and what it was like to conceal a ground-breaking quirk from the rest of the world who only seek to take any advantage they can.
After they had formed the groups to tackle the special exam, the main concern now was that Nathan didn't have any of his old abilities and without any strong offensive abilities, he wouldn't be able to survive for long in the exam much less perform well.
Nobody else in the group knew that Nathan had traded his old abilities for new ones. Right now, he only had the Hack and Advanced Perception abilities, which wouldn't be enough for the difficult challenges ahead.
However, Mako had thought of the perfect solution.
He had no idea how Nathan was able to awaken such an amazing quirk or how he even obtained the two abilities prior to him meeting the group as Nathan was still quite insecure about opening up to anyone and Mako wasn't one to pry as he knew he would open up to him once he felt trustworthy enough.
In the meantime, to combat the lack of an offensive ability, Mako presented Nathan with the perfect solution in the form of a book that he pulled out from his bag that he brought with him to the meet-up.
The book had beautiful engravings with runic symbols and a gorgeous blue crystal embedded right in the center of the cover.
Taking only a single glance at what Mako had pulled from his bag, Nathan immediately recognized what Mako was proposing as he was holding a Level 5 Water ability book.
After the whole fiasco with Mako interrogating Haruto and accepting him into their group and mission, Mako had advised Nathan to keep the Hack ability as it was an extremely resourceful and versatile ability that could come in handy in thousands of different situations down the line.
This was the only reason why Nathan didn't switch it back to his explosion ability as he respected his team leader's advice and believed that it would be best to listen to his advice.
With him also vowing to never give up his advanced perception ability for his own reasons, Nathan had no way of possessing an offensive ability, unless he were to obtain another ability.
One of the reasons why Nathan had even joined the military program was because he was guaranteed to gain strong ability books and skills while training under the military as well as priceless experience and training that would help him greatly in achieving his own goals.
Since his quirk could transform any level ability into another, maintaining it at the same level, he would only have to possess high-level abilities and then he could transform them into any ability he liked as long as he had the knowledge of said ability.
However, gaining ability books from the military was still way away and Nathan didn't have any other option to gain more abilities... that was until Mako presented him with a level 5 Water ability book.
"Mako... how did you get this?" Nathan asked as took the book from Mako's hands to take a closer look.
"I had been holding onto it for quite some time but I was never able to prepare my body to make space for another ability so I have decided to give it to you," Mako said.
This was a complete lie and Mako had only just now purchased the ability book from his shop for 6 Gold coins but he wasn't going to reveal that to Nathan as just like him, he also had a couple of secrets that he didn't want the world to find out about.
Hearing Mako's response, Nathan immediately handed the ability book back to Mako," No, I can't accept this... This is yours and it must have cost a fortune to obtain... I can't take this from you..."
Nathan was indeed correct about the book costing a fortune as even though Mako didn't use real-world credits, he had spent 6 Gold coins which was a significant amount of system currency for a level 5 ability book.
However, Mako didn't want to hear any of it as he pushed the book back into Nathan's hands, refusing to take it back.
"Nathan... It's not about just me and you. This is bigger than the both of us. You are in a team with two other people who are relying on your strength and power to help them pass this exam. If you don't have any abilities that could help them, not only you but they will also get eliminated and I am not going to allow our team to suffer another humiliating loss again." Mako said with a direct tone that had a hint of anger in it.
Nathan didn't have any words to respond to Mako's strong emotions as he knew that Mako was absolutely correct. If he were to take the exam in his current state, he would only hinder the team and put them at a disadvantage.
He too didn't want ever to feel the humiliation that he had to endure after they had failed their first mission and even lost one of their friends.
He stared at the shiny crystal embedded within the ability book with a bit of hesitation; however, ultimately he agreed with Mako's reasoning and accepted the book.
He ripped the crystal from the cover and instantly broke it. The aura stored inside the crystal quickly entered his body and a cooling sensation washed all over him.
It only took a couple of seconds before the light faded away and now Nathan possessed a level 5 Water ability as well.
"I am grateful for what you have done for me, Mako..." Nathan stated as he could feel the strength of another level 5 ability inside his core," Mark my words, I will pay you back for everything you have done for me,"
The two shook hands, further cementing their friendship in that moment as the aura around Nathan quickly settled down.
"Try to learn all the skills in this book as quickly as possible before converting it to another ability," Mako advised even though Nathan now possessed a level 5 water ability, it was still quite weak as Nathan hadn't learned any of the skills accompanied with the ability which was still stored inside the book.
Nathan's quirk worked quite mysteriously as not only would it be able to convert one ability into another but it would also convert its old skills to appropriate skills for the new ability.
The skills Nathan would receive were always random and he would have no idea which skills he would end up getting but as soon as the conversion was complete, he would instantly gain the knowledge of all of the new skills that he had acquired with his new ability.
The skills would still remain of the same rank so a D-tier skill would be converted into another D-tier skill but everyone knew that ranks barely mattered when determining how strong a skill could be depending on its uniqueness and versatility as there are so many examples when a E-tier skill would be better than a D-tier skill.
Another reason why Nathan was underpowered thus far was because even though he could freely switch his abilities and effectively obtain any ability in the entire world, he only had a small number of weak skills which translated to him having to fight with the pure strength of the actual ability alone as his skills would rarely come in handy.
This, however, would soon change as Mako had used Analyze on the book beforehand and knew that the book contained 3 D-tier and 2 E-tier skills which would give Nathan lots of options after he converted it into either the blood wolf transformation ability or the explosion ability.

Nathan made his personal goal to completely learn every skill inside the ability book before the time came for the special exam to begin.

With that, Mako was finally done for the day as he could now finally get some shut-eye and rest up for another big day tomorrow.
He couldn't believe how many important things had happened in the span of just one day and he was now completely exhausted.
His body was still aching all over after his intense fight with Alexi and his energy levels were also below 1000 which made him feel extremely sluggish and weak.
After parting ways with Nathan, he quickly made his way back to his dorm and collapsed onto his bed, his regular bed feeling like he was laying on the gentlest and fluffiest cloud as he dozed off into his world of dreams and allowing his body a well-earned rest to be ready for the military display tomorrow.
