Undead Beast Master: Living Solely for My Desires-Chapter 281: The Privilege of Vengeance
Zaroth was not the kind of man who feared acknowledging another's strength. He stood at a meter and seventy centimeters, while his opponent's was two meters. Zaroth had a good amount of muscle and was pretty lean, while Hugo looked like a carved statue with all the muscle he had. If going by ratio, Hugo had about two times the muscle mass of Zaroth.
There was no denying that Hugo had the upper hand in raw strength, and that was precisely why Zaroth wanted to fight him.
It was a good practice to fight a stronger opponents one-on-one from time to time; this duel, if one could call it that, was going to push Zaroth's odachi skills to their limits.
Hugo was far from being at his best. He had lost a significant amount of blood, and the little that remained was tainted by Hellweaver venom. He was much weaker than he had been at his peak, yet Zaroth knew that his own physical strength was still no match for Hugo's.
Hugo scoffed. "So let me get this straight—you want to duel me while I'm weak, and just in case things don't go your way, you're keeping your little monsters ready to tear me apart the moment I get the upper hand?"
Zaroth smiled behind the mask. "It's nice that you are able to quickly catch upon what I want."
Hugo smirked even wider. "It's a little pathetic, don't you think?" He was trying to provoke a reaction, to make Zaroth angry so that he could make a mistake.
However, Zaroth's smile never left his face, though it wasn't visible due to the demonic mask.
"You are alive based on my whim, so you don't have much say in the matter," he spoke, as Nightshade appeared behind Hugo, growing and staring hungrily at him. The message was clear: you either fight Zaroth or be torn apart by his beasts.
Zaroth wasn't done, however, as he pointed to the chained woman who had been spared. "I am not blind, you fool. You have brought a slave in the middle of battlefield. Let me guess, you were planning to use her as a meat shield if the need arose, no?"
Throwing a brief glance at the woman, Hugo chuckled. "No. I brought her along in case I couldn't find a blonde beauty to blow off steam with. Had to have a backup plan, right? Though, looking at her now… I doubt I'll get it up for that filthy thing again."
Zaroth's grip tightened so much that his fingers became white. For a brief moment, he remembered when he was captured by the Crimson Sun army and made into a slave, even if it was just for a day. The thoughts of what they were going to do to him were horrifying at the time. So, seeing somebody treat the woman like that filled him with rage.
"Enough talk," Zaroth spoke coldly as he took a step forward. "It's time you become useful for the first time in your life before your end."
Not saying anything else, he shot toward Hugo with his odachi ready to strike.
Hugo's eyes narrowed, getting ready for the final battle of his life. Even if he was going to die, he was not going to die without a fight. Who knows, maybe he would be able to kill the brat before him, faster than his beasts could react.
Ready to meet his attack, Hugo swung with his two axes at the same time. One diagonal and one horizontal attack. They were slower than usually because of the poison, but it was still deadly.
Zaroth managed to twist his body just enough to make the vertical strike miss, but that wasn't possible with the horizontal one. As the axe collided with Zaroth's odachi, he felt his whole body shudder from the sheer power alone. Even in this weakened state, Hugo was still able to put up a great fight.

As Zaroth was staggered back for a moment, Hugo's eyes narrowed, seeing a chance to take down his opponent. He moved his axes in an X shape, intending to overwhelm him.
Zaroth smiled darkly. In that moment, he lost—it was obvious that Hugo, despite his weakened state, had not only overpowered him in strength but in skill as well. Rarely had a fight proved so valuable. He was reminded that there was so much more room to grow. He would be able to hone his skill with the odachi much more.
Sure, he wasn't intending to stop learning how to use other weapons, but after careful consideration, he concluded that the odachi felt the most natural in his hands, and as such, it was going to be his main weapon from now on.
His little experiment was done, but that did not mean that he would lose the fight. He was just going to include his other skills from now on.
Opening his palm, he let out a fireball aimed at Hugo's face.
"I have already seen that attack!" Hugo shouted as he moved his head just enough so that the attack would miss. This, however, caused him to be distracted, and Zaroth lowered his body to the ground, going below the strike.
'You haven't seen this, though!' Zaroth thought as he moved his mask a bit upright, uncovered his mouth, and let out a firebreath.
"Ugh!" Hugo grunted as he felt his flesh burning from the high temperatures.
"Trick after trick—can't you fight like a man?!" Hugo shouted as he aimed to strike where he believed Zaroth was, as the smoke that rose from his attack obscured his view.
His attacks never met their target, however, as the axes stopped mid-swing when Zaroth's odachi pierced Hugo's stomach.
Not a second later, Zaroth pulled out the odachi, opening a gaping wound.
The damage Hugo had accumulated was too much, and finally unable to go on, he fell to his knees, dropping his axes to the ground. His mouth opened as he tried to gasp for air, moving his hands to his abdomen, trying to stop the blood from leaving his body.
With a satisfied sigh, Zaroth rose to his feet as he looked at the almost-dead man before him.
Shifting his gaze, he looked at the chained woman near one of the fallen lizards.
"You," he called out as he approached her and cut her chains, freeing her.
She looked up slowly, her eyes hollow until they met his.
"You may kill him," he spoke as he pointed towards Hugo.
The woman slowly shifted her gaze to the kneeling man and got up on her shaky legs as she managed to mutter a quiet thank you.
As she reached him, she barely lifted one of his great axes off the ground and brought it down on his skull, splitting it in two.
Hugo's dead body collapsed on the ground, lifeless, as blood spilled from his wound.
A pale smile appeared on the woman's face as she looked at the person that had tormented her for so long, now dead.
Zaroth hadn't let her kill Hugo out of mercy or pity. He was fairly certain that if he delivered the final blow himself, his demonic powers wouldn't grow from it. More importantly, he needed the woman stable enough—mentally and emotionally—to answer a few questions.
She needed to trust him—or at least feel indebted to him—otherwise, there was no assurance that her answers would be truthful.
After allowing her a few moments to catch her breath, Zaroth spoke. "I've freed you and given you the privilege of killing the man who tormented you however he pleased. In return, I have a few questions I'd like answered."
