Trials of the Abyss-Chapter 694: The Remains of a Sovereign
Chapter 694: The Remains of a Sovereign
The Black Dragon King was supposed to remain in the Sixth World and wait for Pang Jian's signal. However, contrary to Pang Jian's expectations, he suddenly appeared in the Seventh World with no prior communication whatsoever.
After arriving, he severed all connections with Pang Jian. No matter how hard Pang Jian tried to sense him, he could no longer perceive the Black Dragon King's movements. It was clear to Pang Jian that the Black Dragon King had not descended for his sake.
The situation in the Seventh World had grown immensely complicated. There was the colossal Black Empyrean Phoenix, the radiance that revealed its form, the Primordial Demon in the form of a demonic figure, Qi Xu, and now the Black Dragon King as well.
Pang Jian originally intended to probe the depths of the Primordial Demon's power, to see if there was any way to eliminate him, but he found himself momentarily at a loss.
"Help me!" Qi Xu shrieked as she desperately flew toward Pang Jian.
Her fiery eyes shimmered with pain and struggle, as if resisting a foreign will with all her might.
The Primordial Demon's corruption? Pang Jian raised his guard, tightly gripping Five Thunder Annihilation and Ghostflare. freёnovelkiss.com
"Something inside the Black Empyrean Phoenix's corpse is affecting me!" Qi Xu cried helplessly. "Pang Jian, I-I can't even die. I don't even have the strength to end myself! I don't want to be a puppet or a plaything forever! I—"
Clusters of flame flared from her alluring figure. Within each flickering flame burned a drop of blood, red as a polished garnet, and within each drop of blood, a faint figure slowly took shape.
The faintly androgynous Primordial Demon, the peerlessly beautiful Luo Hongyan, and the silently majestic Black Empyrean Phoenix could be seen in the drops of blood and flickering flames.
The Primordial Demon, Luo Hongyan, and the Black Empyrean Phoenix were treating Qi Xu's body and divine soul as a battlefield.
This realization left Pang Jian shaken.
The Primordial Demon is one thing, but where is Luo Hongyan? And what's the deal with that Black Empyrean Phoenix?
There's no soul fluctuations to be found from the massive remains of the Black Empyrean Phoenix. In other words, it's long since perished. So, why is its will still active? And why are all of them fighting to claim Qi Xu as their vessel?
Lightning crackled in Pang Jian's sea of consciousness. A foreign will had quietly seeped in while he was deep in thought.
Fortunately, he had long been on high alert and had prepared a trap in advance. When the intruding will tried to sneak in, a lightning vortex triggered, obliterating the foreign will.
"Who is it?" Pang Jian snorted coldly, raising his Five Thunder Annihilation and striking down toward the massive demonic figure slowly pressing in on him.
Thunder boomed and multicolored lightning flashed. Towering pillars of lightning crashed down toward the all-encompassing demonic figure that the Primordial Demon had fused with.
"It wasn't me!" the Primordial Demon yelled, tearing free from the towering demonic figure right before the lightning struck.
Demonic figures and soul fragments scattered like startled birds. In an instant, the Primordial Demon split into thousands of parts, each shrinking to avoid the devastating bombardment of Five Thunder Annihilation.
These fragments drifted through the void, swirling around Pang Jian and Qi Xu like shadows seeking new hosts.
"This world has few living beings of flesh and blood. Every one is worth contending for," the Primordial Demon said, voice almost tender. The scattered soul fragments then converged into nine identical figures.
The nine demonic figures all bore the Primordial Demon's appearance and towered ten thousand zhang tall. Though identical in appearance, each carried a distinct aspect of the Dao of Demon.
The Primordial Demon wielded a different aspect of the Dao of Demon in each, like nine Demon Gods unleashing their power in unison.
"Freeze!" the nine Primordial Demons shouted in unison, low voices resonating as they circled Pang Jian and Qi Xu.
All nine performed a blend of actions. Some formed intricate seals with both hands, others chanted ancient demonic script, a few sang with unsettling joy, while the rest conjured demon heads from their palms.
Demonic energy surged from the center of the nine Primordial Demons, with strands of wicked thoughts visible within.
Qi Xu found herself unable to move.
The negative thoughts within her—her fear, confusion, and dread—were stirred to the surface and pulled into the burning flames around her. Shadowy figures ignited within the droplets of blood flickering in the flames.
The nine Primordial Demons burned the wills of Luo Hongyan and the Black Empyrean Phoenix within Qi Xu through a demonic technique Pang Jian could not comprehend.
The Primordial Demon's methods were as ferocious and formidable as ever.
Pang Jian previously suspected that the Primordial Demon was merely putting on a show of strength, using Qi Xu to threaten him to avoid revealing his weakened state, but it seemed Pang Jian had been mistaken.
Lightning crackled through Pang Jian's sea of consciousness and bolts of lightning coiled around his body. Wielding Five Thunder Annihilation, he swept the divine artifact in a wide arc, driving back the tide of demonic energy surging toward him.
Despite the nine Primordial Demons surrounding him, Pang Jian remained unharmed. The Primordial Demon had not managed to restrain his body or corrode his soul.
Strangely enough, Pang Jian still had strength to spare after resisting the attack.
The Primordial Demon isn't this weak! Qi Xu's body isn't the real battlefield!
So, the remains of the Black Empyrean Phoenix are Luo Hongyan's true battleground. Her opponent was never the Primordial Demon!
As Pang Jian observed, he noticed the surrounding darkness was slowly eating away at the light that had revealed the Black Empyrean Phoenix.
The light, tinged with the aura of death and cold, would sometimes gain the upper hand, illuminating the Black Empyrean Phoenix's body within the darkness. At other times, the darkness would swallow the light, wiping away the cold and the aura of death, causing the remains of the Black Empyrean Phoenix to vanish once more.
This clash between light and darkness had clearly been raging in and around the Black Empyrean Phoenix's remains for a long time. The two ancient beings waged war deep within the eternal darkness of the Seventh World.
The Primordial Demon held no more than the right to observe, lacking the power to take part. His small victory within Qi Xu was a trivial matter. It was insignificant compared to the greater battle unfolding within the Black Empyrean Phoenix's remains.
Pang Jian was struck with a thunderous realization. A Sovereign of the ancient Fey Race perished in the Seventh World of the Abyss!
As he took in the battle before him, he became certain that the colossal Black Empyrean Phoenix was the true body of a Sovereign. This Sovereign was born of the ancient Fey Race and wielded dominion over darkness.
Luo Hongyan, known as Sovereign Luo in the starry skies, was revered as a God of Light. Although the six Heavenly Daos she comprehended had fueled her ascent as a Sovereign, the Dao of Light still remained the core of her strength. All her other Heavenly Daos were merely supplemental.
That Black Empyrean Phoenix was the opposite. The Dao of Darkness was its innate source of power, while destruction, ruin, madness, brutality, poison, and all the other parts of the murky energy of the Fifth World served only as auxiliaries.
Luo Hongyan and the Black Empyrean Phoenix appeared to have been sworn enemies in the starry skies, locked in conflicts against each other for ages. In the end, the Black Empyrean Phoenix had somehow died in the Seventh World of the Abyss, its remains eternally submerged in darkness.
That was its supposed end. However, that was not necessarily true at all.
The most sacred truth of the Phoenix Race was their nirvanic rebirth.
There was still a chance it could rise anew.
