Transmigration: On the Gossip Front-Chapter 1897 - 1898: Female Passerby Intellectual Youth 40
Wang Yan walked out of the dormitory just as Zhang Yu came out, noticing she was carrying a big bamboo basket on her back.
Seeing that Zhang Yu seemed quite relaxed, Wang Yan estimated that the basket’s contents weren’t very heavy, which relieved her. If Zhang Yu was bringing too much back, her parents might think she was not being filial.
Her good mood plummeted to the bottom when they reached the farm, because Zhang Yu went to get two large bags of rice.
Wang Yan knew Zhang Yu would definitely buy rice, there was no way she would let it go. But she didn’t expect Zhang Yu to buy two bags, that’s two hundred pounds of rice.
Hmph, excessive. Having two hundred pounds of rice on hand indicates she clearly isn’t lacking money. If that’s the case, why can’t she help a bit, knowing how hard things are for me.
To buy those hundred pounds of rice, Wang Yan used all the money she painstakingly saved, to bring things home for the Spring Festival, even though there were plenty of things she hadn’t bought yet.
Like a coal stove, this winter was truly cold, cold enough that resting at night was difficult. With all these siblings, all being girls, why couldn’t they understand each other a bit?
Suddenly, Wang Yan remembered Zhang Yu, a little girl, how could she carry two hundred pounds of rice back alone? Surely there had to be someone to help, right?
Wang Yan knew that after these days of training, everyone’s physical strength had increased a lot, yet no matter how strong one is, it’s impossible to lift two hundred pounds of things at once.
She had already thought about it. Although she also needed to bring a hundred pounds of things home, she hoped someone would help a bit. Considering her tight budget, shouldn’t Zhang Yu, her friend, help a little?
Carrying her rice, Wang Yan walked over to Zhang Yu, wanting to show her presence and offer help if needed.
Unexpectedly, a guy came over directly to carry a bag of rice away, and Zhang Yu followed him with a smile.
What’s going on? Wang Yan was puzzled. Was this a romance? But it didn’t seem right, if it truly was, wouldn’t there be some rumor?
Wang Yan stared at Zhang Yu, who knew she was being watched by not just Wang Yan, so she decided to be open about it.
"This time, Fan Zhiqing helped out," Zhang Yu brightly thanked him.
Fan Zhiqing responded warmly, "Thank you, Zhang Zhiqing, for treating me to dinner last time." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Only then did everyone remember Zhang Yu had treated Fan Zhiqing to dinner not long ago, and at the time, they were puzzled thinking why she would do so. If they were a couple, isn’t it usually the guy treating the girl?
Now it was clear, he was helping, so there were no more whispers.
Fan Zhiqing helped carry the things onto the boat and put them where Zhang Yu pointed, then returned to Zhao Yu’s side.
Zhao Tong was also quickly seated beside them, in the spot the Xia Lei sisters had chosen earlier. They had decided in the dormitory that four of them would sit together, so they could watch out for each other when using the restroom or dozing off.
The old knowledge youth had advised them against assuming it was safe on the ship; people might strike late at night when everyone’s tired, and past experiences showed people’s belongings had gone missing before.
It wasn’t money that was stolen, but some local specialties they were bringing home were picked away by someone, and it was indeed disgusting.
There’s no way to make a big fuss and catch someone, as everyone was carrying things home, so they just helped each other.
Only after getting on the ship, Zhang Yu truly relaxed. Their spot was good, quite inside, away from the toilet, but not too far, and not far from where hot water was available, — a central location.
You couldn’t say this spot was perfect. Although no cold wind reached here from the cabin door, the air was not fresh, rather stuffy.
But now it’s winter, so this little issue wasn’t really a problem, Zhang Yu expressed she could totally manage.
After eating a bit, Zhang Yu leaned against the rice bag and began to rest. At this moment, everyone was active, so even if someone really tried to steal, it would likely be in the dead of night, better to keep an eye then.
Xia Lei and the others envied Zhang Yu; amidst such noise, she could sleep quickly, truly admirable.
In this way, when Zhang Yu woke up again feeling groggy, she smelled the aroma of food. Everyone had brought food on board, although the ship provided it, most preferred to bring their own, to save a bit for the Spring Festival going home, despite spending quite a bit.
Rubbed her stomach, Zhang Yu felt she wasn’t very hungry, dazedly watching everyone eat. Zhao Tong found her confused look amusing. "Why aren’t you eating?"
Zhang Yu shook her head, "I’ll eat later." She had brought rice balls, they were fine to eat anytime, they had no distinctive aroma, avoiding the risk of making others hungry and drawing complaints.
After watching for a while, Zhang Yu closed her eyes again and started resting. Xia Lei and the other three rested for a bit in the afternoon but didn’t sleep as well as Zhang Yu, truly envious.
When Zhang Yu woke up again, the cabin had grown much quieter, fewer people chatting, with the Xia Family sisters already asleep, only Zhao Tong persisted.
"I’m going to the restroom, then I’ll get some hot water," feeling hunger, she planned to address hygiene first, then get hot water before dinner.
Zhao Tong responded casually, "You should hurry, or the hot water will be gone."
Zhang Yu acknowledged, planning to use the restroom, fetch hot water, then eat dinner, and once all was done, the cabin had grown still with a few lights extinguished, not glaringly bright.
She stood up and walked a bit on the spot, having slept for long, feeling her body stiffening.
Once her body was less stiff and warmed up a bit, Zhang Yu sat down again to rest, covering her legs with a small quilt, yet still felt cold, despite the closed cabin door preventing any wind.
But there was still a feeling of wind wandering inside the cabin. Zhang Yu took out her hat and scarf, thankful for her predecessor’s memories; without them, she wouldn’t know how to cope.
With the hat on and the scarf wrapped, she didn’t feel as cold. Yet, sitting still made her feel her warmth was decreasing, forcing her to occasionally stand and move to maintain body temperature.
Zhao Tong and the others seemed to be resting poorly, faces tense, yet continued to sleep. Zhang Yu placed a quilt on her.
Looking at the Xia Family sisters, they knew the cold and deliberately brought a thin blanket, so they weren’t terribly cold now.
